Womanizers exist everywhere. Fuck, JFK was a womanizer. And underage girls, really? This has absolutely nothing to do with the south or country music, as I can only imagine most stars of his stature ranging from his time up 'till the early 80's were involved w/ underage girls (seriously, there is no shortage of stories on this topic floating about). Some still get mixed up in this sort of thing, it's just much more difficult to get away with it these days in these days. Led Zep fucked a girl with a shark, + Hank was fuckin' June Carter...hype, man. Speculation. Fun, yes...but not worth taking seriously and like you yourself this shouldn't take away from the music. And no doubt, the guy is indeed still a part of "old timey" south. I say this because most newer fans of the genre seldom even seem to know who the guy is, and when they do 9 times out of 10 it's "my parents/grandparents listened to that", and it's left at just that. That said, even in Hanks death he has successfully managed to break barriers. Nick Cave is a huge fan, Steve Shelley is a fan, there was a compilation of Hank music released some years ago aimed at "alternative music fans", other post mortem compilations have been aimed at the fans who dig the "blusier" aspects of his music. Today, at least around here (the heart of what most not-in-the-know would consider "redneck country") most younger fans of his music come from a more punk rock background. Rockabilly kids, psychobilly (a term I absolutely hate) kids, punk rock kids are championing his music more than anyone else. Fucker was more of a rebel than any John Lennon, and I don't give a shit what anyone has to say about that, either. His music happened to be brutally honest, full of intense emotion (something lacking in most all today's mainstream country music)...ranging from the sad and lonesome tunes, to other more rockin'/fun shit. He was an artist, and the ignorant (like kinn) seem to want to water down this fact by posting pictures of an era of "redneck'' which has little-no-NOTHING to do with the world Hank grew up in as well as the world he's managed to have a massive impact on...an impact he himself in no way could have realized. Almost never met a Hank fan I didn't like. I've met tons of kinns I didn't like, though. They are a dime a fucking dozen. Smoking cigarettes and talking about shit they know nearly nothing about in mall parking lots + on online forums. |

I went through a Hank III Hank Sr Johnny Cash obession for about a year. I was explorin my ol country roots. I would NEVER listen to any of that shit before, but here it is about our lives and it has expanded into the world of punk in a big way. I'm not sure if that is bad or not. Like I said before I went to see Hank III the group of fans was not what I expected. Not trying to be judgemental, but this is Jacksonville, Fl Most were uneducated trash gothed out wearin hank and cash shirts or stupid chicks decked out in june carter punkish outfits. Another reason why we did not stay, the vibe was dissapointing. Hank SR was def an ol southern boy with all of the good and bad that comes along with it, but he sang and wrote his soul and has helped alot of us mixed up cuntry folk through some hard days. So i'm not gonna let that aspect detract from his music that I love and the memories it brings me. Fuck I have to love my white trash redneck family members all like 100 of them. You can only understand if you have grown up around (edit: in) this shit. I chose to not be like them, but they are still my blood and you cannot live without yr blood. I just find humor in it they are lovable chracters. |

Cool thread! I truly realized how great he was when I was about 14. I got 40 greatest hits and that was enough to make me a fan forever..
There's some speculation that Hank Jr. is not really the son of Hank Sr. I believe his Mom changed his name.. Regardless, Jr. always got my nerves, but Sr. wrote great songs and great melodies. |
I'm increasingly beginning to think of Sonic Gail in relation to scenes in carnivale.

Yeah, I look up to the womaniser as being something I'm too nerdy to be.

If Robert Hampson of Loop/Main likes him, who am I to disagree? He's one of those people I meant to check out ever since I saw an album of Hank Williams covers by that guy from The The in some record shop many moons ago. I didn't pick it up because I'm not much of a fan of The The or the majority of records that consist entirely of covers, so your recommendations are welcome.

It's a southern/redneck thing. Doesn't matter though because Hank still wrote good tunes.... something like that? I was confused as well. |

Well, I think we've already established that I'm a huge fan of Hank, so it doesn't bother me enormously. I was trying to point out that ni'k was pushing buttons which, rightly or wrongly, are there in the stereotype of country for good reason. The other side of that stereotype is the one that swa mentioned - 'first rock star' type bollocks. I personally tend not to care about a person's perception in the rock pantheon, but it's definitely there. The point with Hank, for me, is that he's got an astonishing economy as a writer and managed to write something like two bad songs (Fly trouble and Hey good lookin'), whereas most bands manage maybe 4 genuinely brilliant songs in their lifetime. Hank's over and above everyone else for me because unlike anyone else in the pantheon of all-time greats, there's a minimum of cack. I mean, Abba Gold is astonishing, certainly, but they still also wrote Hey Hey Helen. |

You should be able to get one of those service station compilations for a couple of quid. Anywhere you dip your toes should be amazing. Maybe try a Luke the Drifter compilation, or there's a nice mix of stuff on Lost Highway if you want something specific. |
I should mention that in principle there's everything wrong with womanisers and rock and roll is pretty disgusting in its valorisation of some horrendous people. Hank's by no means the worst in this but I don't think we should exonerate people just solely because their music's great. I tend to think the reason women don't get involved in rock is partly because the crowd buy into the 'rock myth' thing so as to exonerate themselves of being cunts. Y'know, ladies do unfortunately get raped a lot of the time in rock crowds, and the mythology surrounding it is partly to blame.
|
Quote:
If this is the case, why did you even bring it up to begin with? And ladies get raped in all crowds. There are reasons as to why it seems to be (and possibly even is...) more common in the rock universe. |
Sorry, can you actually read or are you just a complete fucktard?
|
Sorry, I was actually responding to two of your above posts.
You say one thing really doesn't matter, because it doesn't take away from the fact that Hank was brilliant song writer...then still, you said it anyways. And even more idiotic, you said it as if it's some common southern thing. |
this is what he does now.
being contrarian for the sake of some psychotic insistence on his own stupid "opinion". he doesn't really have one, it's just some extreme individualism trip crap. he will go on and on, he won't stop. it's not like it could ever be less redundant as everything else he says. anyway. i'm just waiting for the next meltdown. know it can't be far off. the pressure has to be close to boiling at this point. he wants to save face with this "act like i can argue down everyone" crap. swagate 11(?lostcount) can't be far off. |

Fuck off....please. Unless of course you have something valid to say. |

Right, well, we've got two sides of a coin here. Though ni'k isn't quite a fuckwit.
THE POINT I AM MAKING is necessarily contradictory; I am ASKING YOU THE INTERNET how you deal with these two opposing views present in one issue. The two views (to recapitulate) are: 1) "Hey, isn't Hank great? Sure heckity I likes me some Hank" and 2) "Boy howdy, it's a shame that musicians are sometimes shit, sure heckity ain't it?" and the OVERALL question isn't one of trying to reconcile the two points but how to negotiate the tension. I'm sorry that you, ni'k, seem to misunderstand me. Swa can fuck off because he's a retard. Edit: I may have mis-read ni'k's post. |
Quote:
what? you do get that my last post was referring solely to swa right? |
Both of y'all are fucking retarded.
Good job attempting to avoid the real question.... |
Womanizer, sure.
At least he wasnt a Turtle-izer like kurdtzz |
i have yet to see a thread you've made were there has been a "real question" anywhere but in your own head when you've started arguing with someone.
you've been carrying this stupid pretense since your last breakdown. it cannot save you from your own eternal embarrassment. |
