I'll wait for the blu ray.
;) |
For the first time, 1991: The Year Punk Broke will finally make its debut on DVD on September 6, 2011. All footage has been fully restored with audio re-synced and remastered in uncompressed PCM stereo under the supervision of Sonic Youth.
Filmed a month prior to the release of their breakthrough album Nevermind, 1991: The Year Punk Broke also includes footage of Nirvana unknowingly on the cusp of leading a massive cultural movement as they performed “Smells Like Teen Spirit,“ “Polly” and “Negative Creep.” Also featured is Dinosaur Jr.’s live versions of “Freak Scene” and “The Wagon” and Babes In Toyland’s brutal performance of “Dustcake Boy” as well as an appearance from punk forefathers The Ramones as they blast through 1977′s “Commando.” 1991: The Year Punk Broke is also packed with 65 minutes of bonus material, including the previously unreleased featurette “(This Is Known As) The Blues Scale” featuring over 40 minutes of additional live footage of Sonic Youth performing “White Kross,” “Eric’s Trip,” “Chapel Hill” and “Sugar Kane,” plus a rare Nirvana performance of “In Bloom.” Other extras include live rough cuts of “Mote” and “Flower,” the original movie trailer, and “Broken Punk” — a 2003 panel discussion Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, Steve Shelley and Lee Ranaldo, Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis and Filmmaker Dave Markey. In conjunction with the release of 1991 The Year Punk Broke is Sonic Youth’s Hits Are For Squares, previously available only through limited outlets. Hits Are For Squares will be released on August 23, 2011 – a collection of songs from Sonic Youth’s career selected by a diverse group of artists, actors, directors and musicians whose own progressive and unconventional style is akin to the freestyle expression of Sonic Youth’s music. The artisans handpicked by Sonic Youth include Catherine Keener, Beck, Mike D, Radiohead, Portia De Rossi, Diablo Cody, Allison Anders, Dave Eggers and Mike Watt, Eddie Vedder, Michelle Williams, Flea, Gus Van Sant, David Cross, Chloe Sevigny, and The Flaming Lips. Also included is the track “Slow Revolution” written and recorded for the original release. |

HA! Was coming on this thread just to write "just in time for DVD to die and the blu ray to take over!" But I actually don't think that'll ever happen anyway. |
Cool

Interesting article on Spin's website. They interviewed Dave Markey:
http://www.spin.com/articles/inside-...epic-1991-tour At the time, Madonna's Truth or Dare was in theaters — this big cultural moment. So we decided to reenact scenes and we had the idea where Kurt, pretending to be Kevin Costner, meets Madonna backstage and he says, "You guys were really neat." But he had this champagne bottle and decided to fling it around the room. That was an add-on. It wasn't rehearsed. He didn't break it but everyone thought he was going to smash it through a window. Dave and Kim ran out of the room as if it was going to be set on fire. It was hilarious. |
you can pre-order it now from the store!

I assume that's for the region 1 DVD |

A couple months back I watched Year Punk Broke in Easthampton MA, with Thurston doing a Q&A. It was cool to watch the movie with a room full of people. Thank god it's finally coming out on DVD, my VHS copy is beat to hell

anyone knows how many audio and subtitles options will feature? Also, is it only ntsc?
p.s.: does sy ever mentioned about release any kind of video (promos/live) from their 80s period? thanks |
great, now there is a whole other section that i have to memorize and love.
|
hey just got this...i'm excited but kind of bummed...there is no
Running audio commentary track by Thurston Moore & Dave Markey as originally posted in the hype up...now if you look at the hype up on the main page.. the commentary track is no longer listed anyone know why?...i was really looking forward to it and to answer an above question...i'm in the usa and it's marked as NTSC there appears to be no separate audio track (or is it an easter egg?)..but the subtitles on the disc are English,French,German,Italian,Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese ...Oh...BTW audio is PCM stereo...oh i just noticed..my copy says nice and bold NTSC...but over the region marker it says "ALL" real bummed about the commentary but it also has a nice picture booklet enjoy...cuz i'm about to check it out now |
pre-ordered from SYStore.

:( me too... |
Am I the only one who picked this up today? I probably won't watch it for a while (lack of commentary is disappointing and seeing "I Love Her All The Time" and "Flower" will probably make me cry), but it's very cool that it's finally out!
|
Well, that didn't last long. Does anyone know whether "Mote" was filmed at the Serenadenhof in Nuremburg? I always assumed the audio was taken from soundcheck like the beginning of the video, but it segues into "Flower" and Thurston introduces it which seems like an odd thing to do at soundcheck. The 08/30/91 Nuremburg gig is one of the few from this tour that have not surfaced, and the footage of them at an amusement park is supposedly from this date. Thurston is wearing the same Nirvana shirt at soundcheck that he's wearing at the amusement park, but he could've worn that multiple times over the tour.
Also, most of the audio isn't matched with the same video of the performance (hell, one of the Nirvana songs isn't even from this tour!), so it's possible that the audio of "Moteflower" is taken from a different day, but it doesn't match any of the circulating recordings so we're running out of options... (I know, who gives a shit? Me, apparently. Still.) |
I'm not sure if "Inhuman" from Blues Scale is from the 08/21/91 gig (only surfaced recording of Inhuman from that tour), cuz Lee's not playing Thurston's tele - but they do seem to stop/start at the same time. Haven't done a side-by-side comparison of the audio yet, though. Cool to see Kim going apeshit on the Eterna!
Glad to finally get(?) the "Spuds Christ" reference, too. |
