Nurse belongs certainly in my top-5 of Sonic albums. Favourite tracks are Pattern & New Hampshire as they remind me to their EVOL & Sister days.
If I have to pick a weaker track, let it be dude ranch nurse.

Rob Instigator 04.07.2006 08:49 AM

fucking A! SONIC NURSE is great
I listen to it anytime, when chillin, when rockin, when smokin, whatever.

My favorite song on Nurse is New Hampshire. (my favorite songs are ussually the LEE songs)

Murray street is a fantastic fucking album. I love it all. that one affects me like nurse affects you laila. I listen to Murray street when I am chilling. my favorite Murray street songs are
PLASTIC SUN
and
KAREN REVISITED

I fucking love plastic sun. I love the old school jittery punk feel, reminds me of minutemen, or no means no.

Makes sense, MS and nurse had a very open, almost jammy, feel to them which is goign to be missed. But we did get two fuckin great albums out of it.
I like Nurse a lot more than murray street. Partly becuz I saw them on the nurse tour when I barely knew any of their songs and it changed my life, so I love this album. I also think I may be one of the few people actually really love both plastic sun and arthur doyle... once I had MS in my friends car and while sun was on he asked me if i wanted to swtich cds and I said, "no, it's just a hisssy fit, and it's almost over." and that's why I love it.

I can neve rpick a favorite nurse though, they're all really good. Like I'd say it's their most consistent album, not best, but the most together feeling one. I love the way pattern recognition starts off, that first riff just bending off, great lead in to a good time. unmade bed, peace attack, and dripping dream are great thurston songs, some of my favorite. Lee's is good, not his best, but perfect fit on the disc (my girlfriend's favorite tho).

Fun fact - i wrote peace attack on the back of my jacket. I guess if i had to pick a favorite song, it might be that one.

guitarpro 04.07.2006 12:22 PM

It sure is

atari 2600 07.18.2006 07:08 PM

It is great. It's Sonic Youth's best since Washing Machine. & my favorite is Dude Ranch Nurse as well.

I expressed all this is previous writings here at this accursed board.

Betrand, there's several Sister-era shows that are amazing, & Murray Street shows, on the whole, are even better than Sonic Nurse shows as far as song performances. On the Sonic Nurse tour though, Sonic Youth really streched out with some wondrous interludes.

thethuthinnang 07.18.2006 07:30 PM

I love Nurse. New Hampshire can brighten the worst day.

atari 2600 07.18.2006 07:55 PM

my second favorite, yep.

dazedcola 07.18.2006 08:28 PM

Yea i like Sonic Nurse a lot. I think its the best record they've released this decade. In light of RR I appreciate Nurse more now. Its a record you can keep coming back to you and discovering new things to.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 07.18.2006 08:29 PM

I got Nurse on vinyl, and I almost feel that I'd like it more if I got it on a CD. My 4 favorite songs all happen to be on different sides. If I had the CD I could just listen through.

Asim 07.18.2006 08:59 PM

I'm surprised Unmade Bed wasn't mentioned, greatest [guitar] song on the album. Sonic Nurse was great, but I wish they'd replace Hand Cream and Golden Blue with anything, or atleast make it shorter. Peace Attack is also really clever, but I always had a problem with music crossing politics.

atari 2600 07.18.2006 09:23 PM

& that's why Thurston keeps it ambiguous, Asim, because he realizes he's never gonna be Sir John Winston Ono Lennon. Not in a million fucking years.

I love Unmade Bed. It's a classic. I, like you, have never gotten too fired up about I Love You Golden Blue either. It's the album's weakest track. I also was pissed to hear Jim's production flourishes on Handcream when I first listened to Sonic Nurse. Now, it makes a lot more sense, but Golden Blue gets skipped more often than not.

Daddylikes 07.18.2006 09:59 PM

New Hampshire and that song about Dub Reggae are the ones that I skip non stop.

Golden Blue is one of my favorite tracks. The lyrics aren't great, but the music rizzocks.

kingcoffee 07.18.2006 11:49 PM

Nurse is a truly great SY album. I love the more complex nature of the songs. Jim O'Rourke really revitalized and inspired the band on that record. It's one of my favorite SY albums. The songs are so lush, but not overly so like in some Flaming Lips stuff. The songs are complex, but not painstakingly so. It's just right. Plus the band is in top form both musically and lyrically.

I love this album 100 times more than Rather Ripped. It's the obvious better record. Anyone who thinks otherwise is out of their fucking gourde.

Rather Ripped should have been more in the vein of Sonic Nurse.

static-harmony 07.18.2006 11:53 PM

Sonic Nurse is pretty cool. I like it cause it chills me out, all the time. When I'm stressed.

foldback 07.19.2006 01:24 AM

I love Murray Street, but Sonic Nurse is probably my favorite SY album. It feels like everything they've ever done and experimented with through their career came together perfectly... at least for me anyway.

Standouts? "Unmade Bed," "Stones," "Paper Cup Exit," "Mariah Carey," "New Hampshire"... oh, jeez, well it's all freaking fantastic, isn't it...

therealglenstyler 07.19.2006 11:19 AM

its taken me the longest of any of their albums to get into, i was completely indifferent to it till a couple of months ago but I am now right there. love it.

great album. unmade bed would be my favourite. i love pattern, coz it's performance. than...well, everything.

Trasher02 07.19.2006 12:19 PM

Sonic Nurse is a masterpiece, this should have been the final SY-album. It would have been a perfect finisher BUT NOOOOOOO THEY wanted to make a ghey-ass pop record album.

I rly hope the next one will have some noise.

Rob Instigator 07.19.2006 12:37 PM

RR is fucking GENIUS amazing ROCK

sonic nurse is amazing. My faves are golden blue, hand creme, and dude ranch nurse.

new hampshire isn't a lee song

Trasher02 07.19.2006 12:49 PM

pattern recognition
yeah biatch

Daddylikes 07.19.2006 02:12 PM

Jesus. New Hampshire is the fucking lamest song of all times.

Paper Cut Exit is the only Lee song on the album.

BTW, why hasn't Daycare posted "RATHER RIPPED RULEZ" on this thread.

HaydenAsche 07.19.2006 02:13 PM

Need I do it for him?

RATHER RIPPED RULEZZZZ MAAAAN!

badgercorn 07.19.2006 03:51 PM

I loved it. I was expecting a good album after Murray Street, but it really blew me away when I heard it. I think the lyrics are notably good on this LP too.

LNC 07.19.2006 05:43 PM

Absolutely fabulous! Great album. My girlfirend started with nurse and now she worships sy, of course (every does, and everyone will, just matter of time), and she says the patter recog. is the best song ever written. Can't complaint there...

I agree, dude. Sonic Nurse would have been one hell of a Swan Song. But instead of visiting the great song structures of Nurse for inspiration on Rather Ripped they had had to go and release this weak, thin sounding record.

I also want the next record to be more adventurous with feedback and noise. They should play around more with pedals. Maybe some tremolo, envelope filters, flanger and phasing, and some cool delay and loop effects. Im surprised SY hasn't done more of this. They are such a smart band and such a pioneering and adventurous one at that. They inspired a lot of other musicians to flirt with noise. But the thing is, many other bands in the same vein as SY get noise from pedals where as SY create noise from their guitar tunings, volume and beating the shit out of their equipment. It's just a little something I hope for on the next record.

krastian 07.20.2006 02:58 AM

Noooooo....swan song? Don't do this to me.

Rob Instigator 07.20.2006 01:10 PM

cantank got me, I mistyped new hampshire. I meant Paper Cup Exit.

Lee rules.

kingcoffee 07.20.2006 01:13 PM

Sorry, but I've been hearing that SY are at their end days. I hope it isn't true, but it's possible.

It's been scientifically proven.

Rob Instigator 07.20.2006 01:15 PM

Yeah, this doesn't sound too good. I really don't know what I would do without SY being around. I think the band could still continue. I mean the Rolling Stones have been around since the early 60's. Sy can still keep going strong.

lunberg 07.20.2006 02:34 PM

Hey what about the next Lee record. Any news ??

I personally haven't heard anything new about Lee's next album. Hopefully it will be better than some of his past material. I think it's strange how Lee is the most consistantly great songwriter in Sonic Youth, but when it comes to his solo records and side projects it can be wildly inconsistant. It can be genius or it can be terrible. From Here --> Infinity was interesting sonically, but not really listenable where as East Jesus, Scriptures of the Golden Eternity and Amarillo Ramp (for Robert Smithson) were far more interesting. His collaborations have been pretty successful, too. Oasis of Whispers and Four Guitars Live were pretty cool.

Asim 07.20.2006 08:37 PM

Now that I think of it, this is a bad album; still better than Ghosts. Unmade Bed is the only standout track and it's the only thing that helps the album stand together. Rather Ripped is totally better in every way.

No way in Hell is this true. Nurse is a wonderful album. Rather Ripped paels in every way compared to Nurse.
