I appreciate the Chinese characters behind her. And how her shirt rules everything forever. |
I liked the stuff she did as Stella Rico. I mean, I'm not going to say she hasn't done anything musically I don't enjoy...there just isn't much of it. She just falls short in the artistic department for me.

Quote:
Yeah, I totally get that... I'm her biggest defender on here and I still wouldn't put most of her Teenage Jesus stuff on my ipod. It's mainly her personal coolness and her affiliation with cool artistic groups that makes me so intrigued by her. |
I'm more interested in the artists than I am those affiliated with them. That's just me, though.

I meant in the context of No Wave... Like, the way she helped shape the scene and the stuff she had to say about it in retrospect. She's super-smart: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKeDow8Owb8 |
I prefer this one. Nice seeing her be put on her ass/embarrassed.

How was she put on her ass there? She tried to criticize that guy's act and he flared up and yelled at her until she backed off... She definitely wasn't embarrassed, she stayed calm throughout the whole exchange. I guess it wasn't a success for her since she barely got any words out, but she definitely came across as the bigger person to me. |
Yes. And that video is even cooler. Nothin' worse than someone who doesn't know how to keep their business in their businesses' place.

Quote:
How so? She was rude by engaging in a conversation she didn't belong in. Sorta like preaching the word of god in public schools...it's just awful. She didn't deserve to get any words in. Why she was even there is beyond me. |
Quote:
It was exactly like preaching the word of god at a school. HE was preaching and the word of god was his offensive act. Comedians know when they're being offensive, and should have a better defence than to yell down their critics for criticizing them at all. Her goal was to defend the girls that he had been ridiculing, and his goal was to cover his own ass. That's a much more cowardly position to take. |
Quote:
To me it appeared his "act" was over and he was outside conversing w/ some friends/fans/etc. If she had an issue w/ his act, perhaps she shouldn't have been there. I mean, it's not like she's changing anything or making a difference. Comedy at it's best is usually offensive. Someone should defend the boys she ridicules (actually, I do it all the time). I don't think he was being a coward at all...I think she stepped on his turf and he shoved her off it. I bet if I approached her the same way she approached him I'd be regarded as some male chauvinist. That simple. If someone breaks into my house, or intrudes on a conversation they don't belong in, I'm damned sure not going out of my way to allow them to speak. She talks too much as is. |
Quote:
If he bases his comedy around being offensive then he should accept it and be able to defend it. Good comedians are offensive for the purposes of satire, and are actually not hateful people. If his only response to her criticism is to tell her to shut up and go away, then I'm led to believe that he's just a hateful person. Looks to me like they were in a bar... Hardly his "turf". He makes it his business to let people know what he thinks of women, why can't she make it her business to respond to it? As he observes in the video several loud times "don't tell people what to do". |
Quote:
Why can't a good comedian be a hateful person? I mean, define "good person". And whether they be at a bar, a venue, or a gas station parking lot she still engaged in a conversation she had zero business being in. And thing is...she's made somewhat of a living off of expressing her feelings regarding men. That spoken word record she did w/ Exene was just painful to even listen to. Not because I'm some dick chauvinist, but because she's clearly an individual not in tune w/ science/nature. Seems to me she likely, and I can't be sure because I wasn't there, showed up at this event to stir shit. Also funny is the fact that no one there (including the person that posted the video on Youtube) seemed to even know who the fuck she was. Hilarious is her introducing herself as Lydia Lunch, and NO ONE giving a fuck. I love her little laugh. It screams "I don't know what to do and wasn't expecting this response". She likes getting reactions out of folks, was awesome seeing her get one she CLEARLY did not EXPECT nor ENJOY. I'd have paid to have seen that. |
Quote:
What's a conversation she doesn't belong in? She can talk to anyone she wants just like this comedian can say whatever he wants. They both make a living off of making fun of the other. The difference is that when they came face-to-face she was alone and remained calm and he was with a bunch of his friends and flared up. I conclude that he's a hateful person. Maybe a good comedian, but a hateful person. So I see no reason to respect him the way I respect Lydia. If I were her I would have walked away from that conversation feeling proud |
Quote:
That's fair + I can respect yr opinion, but we're going to have to agree to disagree on this matter. |
Quote:
That's cool... Put please explain the comment about sucking dick and calling it art. Because that began to trip my male chauvinist detector, which I know you've been quick to explain throughout this discussion is not your intention. |
Quote:
Well, I'm definitely a male and there is a part of me that naturally considers the sexual aspects of females. I think they, like me, should be able to express themselves any way they choose...but those sort of actions, considering the sort of shit she says about men, make me question her motives and sincerity. I deleted that part...but, it still stands. |
Quote:
Yeah, I'm a male too and am a humanist rather than a feminist... Men aren't bad the same way the women aren't bad. I feel like Lydia sometimes lets her frustration turn into hatred but her intentions are still good, the same way I trust that your intentions are good in defending that guy for giving her shit. |
Quote:
I mean, I'd never go as far as to say I "hate" Lydia. I like some of the projects she's been involved with, she has a nice "punky" voice, she can be/was pretty. I just find her, as a personality, very annoying. That's what it all boils down to mostly. |
That's a valid opinion. And you'd better like some of the projects she's been involved with! Because she and Thurston wrote and recorded Death Valley 69 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k0dJEkzXc4
|
Quote:
Yeah I know, I know. They also worked together on her "In Limbo" record, which isn't bad. I believe Thurston played bass on it. |
Quote:
yeahhh he did. She also co-wrote Marilyn Moore and was super-involved with the production of EVOL and Bad Moon Rising... One of her records is also in their video for Sacred Trickster. I made a GIF of it: http://gifninja.com/animatedgifs/150424/teenage-jesus.gif |
Cool stuff. Thanks for sharin'.

Check out my hometown's very own James Chance ripoff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBBSq...feature=relmfu (biggest shame is, they broke up cause dude is a junky and a thief. Sad. Only recordings are three vids on Youtube, and they only lasted a couple shows before the rest of the bands equipment went missing in action)... |

This is the goofiest shit. This guy is a loudmouthed blue-collar comedian with a mighty self-righteous boner for himself. The video began with him making fun of some girl at a bar and ended with him having yelled in Lydia's face, refusing to listen to anything she had to say against him, calling her fat and old, getting his stupid friends to gang up on her, and threatening to hit her. And she's just an aging, callous rocker trying to give him a piece of her mind. The fact that this guy is receiving any support on these boards is bewildering to me.

"I don't think so Joe."

Its always nice to be reminded how unfunny American Tough-Guy comedians are.

Quote:
On these boards at large? no... but when I started this thread people seemed into her and into No Wave, which is as I expected. I didn't think that anyone who didn't like really noisy experimental music would stay on here for long. My friends that are into SY are all pretty single-minded noise rockers and really into the scene, so I guess I'm just surprised that all of their fans aren't as homogeneous as I've experienced in real life. |
Whatever she is/was, she's a great frontwoman. I've only seen her live once, as part of Harry Crews, but she owned the stage. That's obviously never captured on record but anyway, I'd say her real strengths are as a performer rather than as a musician.

What kind of guy freaks out when someone asks them to look them in the eye? What kind of guy hits a girl for touching him on the shoulder? He was only cool with her until he realized that she wasn't a fan. She was condescending, because he was being dumb as shit. He was a defensive asshole, because he had nothing to say for himself, except that he shouldn't have to defend himself in the first place. She never even got to say whatever snarky thing she was preparing to say, because he yelled over her every time she tried. It had everything to do with a tough guy attitude by refusing to talk to her about his comedy, and if him speaking his mind is to yell "don't go attacking me, I see where yr going with this!" and "this is dopey dumb-dumb talk!" then I feel sorry for the complexity of his thoughts. |
