I see what you mean...
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I find, what most people would term, 'non-guitarists' more interesting than 'guitarists'. |
I am not speaking this way because of gender; I speak this way because I see both of these musicians as "guitar as sound source" players rather than "guitarists."
I have seen Christina do one set that was very good. |
jimi hendrix was my first guitar hero and is still #1
some others... john fahey sonny sharrock dude from the sun city girls whose name i always confuse with his brothers, but whose last name is most certainly bishop rudolph grey (blue humans) kawabata makoto (acid mothers temple) tony iommi (black saabbbbath) thurston mooore blind willie johnson elizabeth cotton d boon (minutemen) are steve vai, yngweieieieiei malmmomomstine, eric johnson etc actually real musicians? i mean does anybody really listen to their music. i always assumed they were just inventions of the guitar industry to help sell overpriced "signature series" crap. kind of like everyone's favorite homeshopping network star, esteban, only slightly more ridiculous. |
Sir Richard Bishop.
He is incredible. Malmsteen and Vai are what I like to call "guitar teacher/guitar magazine" musicians. No one else cares. |
Quote:
elisa is no better guitarist than jewel or sheryl crow. just different genres vai and malmsteen are boring and just in it for the glory, for them it's like a race or a competition, not about music. i read an interview with vai once that said something like if you want to play simple music with meaning and taste then you are a half assed comformist who doesn't deserve to be called a guitar player. there are more tasteful shredders-like guitarists |
Just because Elisa uses a guitar doesn't make her a "guitarist," and I mean that as no slam on her music. It is a sound source at that point; the fact that the object is technically a guitar is immaterial.
That's all I was trying to say; I really didn't mean to come off as a jerk, and apologies if I did. |
Thurston and Lee
Sonic Boom and Jason spaceman(spacemen 3) Taka and Yoda(mono) keiji haino Kevin Shields(MBV) Sonny Sharrock Takeshi Mizutani(Les Rallizes Denudes) Brij Bhushan Kabra John Fahey Robbie Basho(a seriously underrated guitar player) Vini Riely(another very underrated guitar player) |
Nice Mizutani avatar!
I would put him on my list of faves too. Basho was a great guitarist; I have a tough time with his voice though. I also love: Rinji Fukuoka Paul Metzger Sandy Bull Bert Jansch Munehiro Narita Randy Holden |

thanks, I am really obsessed with Les Rallizes Denudes right now. Yeah, everybody seems to have that problem with Basho's voice. Nice womb avatar, by the way! |
Thurston Moore and William Reid (JAMC).

Malmsteen, Yngwie is a beyond talented guitarist. If you appreciate music on a strictly technical level, you must appreciate him. The music is still shit, but I enjoy it on that level, and that level alone.
Props to whoever mentioned chappy from Les Rallizes Denudes. Who are excellent. It's all effects over talent, but there's nothing wrong with that. |
Yngwie midi files for the ultimate experience:
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip...221/index.html Les Rallizes Denudes have talent. The word "talent" really has nothing to do (in my mind at least) with "technical proficiency," which is what you are talking about. Rallizes make killer music and they pushed the envelope far and wide and are as influentail as the Velvet Underground when it comes to Japanese psych, so to say they have "no talent" is inaccurate. They are talented because they make good music. I would also argue that they have less technical ability than average, but that's nitpicking since we are obviously both big fans. Yngwie drives me nuts. |
there are lots of people i could name, but keiji haino really is my absolute favourite.

i was really sick and sleepy when i posted this list and i couldn't remember most of the people's names but i'm better and, therefore, the list will be edited so it doesn't seem so ignorant on my part:

Well, I don't know about gay porn, but a short review of porn involving females will find that there are an awful lot of solo women masturbating, and a lot of them are somewhat alluring. Meh. |
Yar. I was drunk. I shouldn't post things like that whenst drunk. You're entirely right and you can have some props.

I don't know anything about guitars or playing them so I'm not exactly entitled or qualified to aswer this question, but I've noticed that taste kind of goes hand in hand with your own or techincal skills and musical background, which is pretty evident I suppose...
I have a friend who's a fan of dream theater, which I after a couple hours of forced listening grew to dislike enourmously, and he's very trained guitarist, hence he digs something just for the technical side of it, although he openly admits it and in his case he's also able to enjoy less technical things too. To me very technical playing sounds often untiresting and even annoying (if it means fast playing only for the sake of speed). I can "relate" to artists like Haino and magik markers and the likes better. I dig the sound, not the playing and I don't care about the way the sound is produced. |
Well, Haino is a for real guitar virtuoso who uses his skills and stamina to push the instrument forward. He can play circles around MM.
The difference between Haino and someone like Steve Vai is that Haino has taste and is interested in music over a flashy display. |
I concur entirely with the above. It's maybe not that easy to tell from his records, but Haino can seriously play the shit out of any guitarist. I mean, if you watch the Fushitsusha live DVD, there's about 2 bars where he plays the unbelievably fast run from top to bottom in a major scale that Vai and the like would murder for, and then he goes back to playing the more expected avant-jazz/rock fragmentary wonder. And live it's just... I can think of no one with a style that is so entirely his own (even Bailey has his imitators - I should know, I do a fair impression).
