If you ask me, shock art has it's purpose. It's one of many ways in which an artist can express and hopefully liberate him/herself from certain taboos or obstacles they encounter in their daily lives. Most of us avoid the fact that the world isn't always as pretty as it seems. It's not only about love and happiness. Things can, and often do turn out horrible. Hunger, addiction, prostitution, war, death, etc. A good artist will approach these issues in such a way, that it will make us think about the world we live in. I do understand what you mean though. Some of them use the shock method, to gain personal attention or make us feel uncomfortable. It's the wrong approach, and will only lead to people rejecting the work with anger and disgust. |
men with shaved legs look very strange indeed. tour de france.

...or in this case, boredom! |

Whenever I go to a gallery and see work that makes me think and confront myself, I'm very greatful to the artist that made it. The reason for this is that it assures me that I'm not the only person dealing with hard issues. The same goes for music. If I'm having a bad day, a Joy Division record can help me out of my depression. Works almost every time. |

Boredom is one of the main reasons why most of us spend countless hours on this, or any other forum. Nothing new. |

don't be jealous. you didn't see what went on. it was fun for the unthreatened. |

Not me. I'm here because I enjoy the company of a handful of posters. My life is way too busy for boredom. |

i think we've seen plenty of your "performance art"-- which by the way i have enjoyed while other people moaned & condemned your... post-o-rhea? my point is that even bad art is better than cranky comments. not that this thread was bad-- but saying-- even if it were-- so yes i want more forum performance art! of course porkie you'll have your share of detractors because somebody somewhere will feel threatened. anyway, go ahead! show us! |

however many the replies, it's bad news when someone's joy & creativity get castrated. |

Part of being an artist, is dealing with harsh criticism. It goes hand in hand. |
Quote:
yes of course. i happen to take the side of people who like to experiment and play. so my criticism is directed at the critics. i'm sure they can also deal, no? if i call them killjoy killjoy killjoy i'ts just part of a broader debate. |

ha ha ha-- thank you. |

If you post your art in a public place, in such an in-your-face way, surely you're asking for, and expecting comment? And should you expect just praise? I genuinely didn't think it was art, but as somebody bored and doing some e-doodling. And as it wasn't confined to this thread, it was boring having to put somebody on ignore, just so I didn't have to wade through it in order to read other threads. |
