I don't have time at this very second to look at this thread but I'm going to as soon as I get to my grandpas tomorrow in hopes I can download some of these. Did anyone mention that guy who released albums of pure silence? I can never remember his name, but he also released an album of classical music that is played only with percussion and another album of just one organ note and another album of just bombs going off. That's pretty fucking strange. His name is ... uh ... PLIAT I believe.. something like that.. JLIAT! I think it's JLIAT. I can never remember though. Also, that record on Tzadik of just the guy sleeping. Anyway, great thread, will look on it more tomorrow.

i bet most of those records with funny covers aren't strange to listen to at all.

The vast majority of the records on this thread aren't odd sounding at all, in fact some sound fairly samey. I find that the weirdest sounding found records generally haven't got a cover that is particularly odd or anything, more cool retro-graphics.

You also shell out for them because they aren't the sort of stuff that junk shops, charity shops etc have normally in stock. There are only so many moog mantovani records that I want to listen to before I reach for a gun.

I have genuinely been trying to think of something I own which is genuinely unsettling and weird.

I remember I found a tape in a rehearsal space that I played on a broken walkman on the way home that sounded like the most horrifying monstrosity of mess. Turns out the tape was playing at half-speed on near-dead batteries, and played in a proper tape player you could hear why it was left behind. It was guff. Real, real shame though. It's disappeared to the great tape home in the sky now.

Stefan Jaworzyn once told of seeing an LP in the RRR shop of a Japanese couple having sex, and the LP cover having the visage of Emperor Hirohitho. Anyone here have this LP? Me swappy LP for mucho Luncheon Vouchers.

there has been a spate of reissues recently of albums put out in the 1970s by japanese porn stars. i know it's not exactly the same thing, but still.

This is one of the oddest that I've downloaded and posted it on the world music thread already. Wonderful and slightly creepy stuff. Not sure if the link is still working but try it.

Folkways Records FR 8975, this is a US pressing of the impossible to find "Mushroom Ceremony Of the Mazatec Indians Of Mexico". This recording, made by Gordon Wasson in 1956, attempts to chronicle a religious ceremony involving the ingestation of psychedelic mushrooms by Indians who are attempting to communicate with the Divine Spirit. Lots of wild, hallucinatory chanting and the like, which might even appeal to fans of phonetic sound poems or dadaist utterings. Another unusual historical document that only Folkways would have released. The originals came out in 1957 with a blue cover and this press has the tan cover from 1966. "HERE IS A SHAMANIC PERFORMANCE COMPLETE. DR WASSON, A PIONEER IN THE STUDY OF THE ROLE OF MUSHROOMS IN RELIGIOUS RITUAL, GIVES US A TRANSCRIPTION OF AN AUTHENTIC "CONSULTATION" OF THE SACRED MUSHROOM, IN SOUND. THE OCCASION WAS THE ILLNESS OF A YOUTH. THE MUSHROOM, THROUGH THE MOUTH OF MARIA SABINA, A FEMALE SHAMAN, DECREED THAT THE BOY MUST DIE. HE HEARD THE BAD NEWS AND DIED DAYS LATER. DR. I actually found this exact record on the weekend, which has bolstered my Herb collection nicely. It's pretty awesome, if you like that sort of thing (which you really should).
