You see, you are getting me wrong, there. I don't have any strong feeelings for anyone who feels like trolling a board (and by that I mean, someone who doesn't admit being one), it's just, I dunno, I find the energy of constantly trolling a forum a bit twattish because rarely I've witnessed the joke being funny after a while. Sure, virtually everyone, including myself, has the capability of being irritating on the internet. It's just, like, opinions and stuff, you know?

pbradley 10.13.2009 12:07 PM

Trolling can be beneficial in stirring up a message board when it has become lethargic.

Apart from that, there really isn't any need for it. The flip side to that, though, is how the idea of trolling can be used to dismiss sincere disagreement or misunderstanding.

This is actually a good point.
I'm a shitty conversation starter, and I would prefer not to just say any old thing just to fill the space in a context like that (like with "mood statuses" and all that.) And I dont find it useful in my life to coordinate social events (perhaps if all my friends were doing that, but I'm not going to start it off, because it simply hasnt become the more necessary/convenient thing.) For reasons like those, I just dont bother using facebook. One day I might if I felt the need to. I DO have some creeped out reservations about the whole idea, but it's not the biggest thing. I dont text message much or do a lot of communicating outside of face to face or telephone in the first place. It's just how I am.

It's funny though, what the birth of these types of networking sites has done though. It's very divisive. If someone asks me if I have a facebook and I simply reply no, I always, always get eyerolls, like I'm that jerk that is using not having one to act cooler by being the minority, or that I'm missing that one really important thing that upgrades a human into modern status. Its really a huge part of some peoples lives !

pbradley 10.13.2009 12:49 PM

There are numerous times that I barely prevent myself from making a sardonic reply to my friend's statuses. Sometimes I fail to prevent this, because I am a prick and people post some of the most inane shit of all time on facebook.

i agree
for years i have abstained for such forms of social media but it really seems like i'm going to have to sell out: EVERYTHING is getting organised on facebook these days. I have missed out on so many parties and general social gatherings simply because i don't have one. if i did get one i don't think i'd put anything on it, i'd just use it to keep track of what is happening where and when.

icybluejeans 10.13.2009 08:56 PM

I have to admit that I can spend hours on end on facebook/myspace/twitter. Sad, but true.

As someone who has a facebook but probably would rather not, I'd like to answer this.

All my facebook 'friends' are real life people and family. There is no way I could post the same shit on my facebook that I do online. Nor would I want to.

The internets/any forum is a random bar for me, there are a couple of people I know and lots I don't. The people are generally more interesting, I know less about them and therefore they bore me less. There are always new people and in no way to I feel as though I HAVE to answer their stupid questions or post happy birthday if I dont want to or join a group for someone's pets birthday... unlike facebook. Facebook is an uncomfortable family gathering with people also in attendance who I've known since I was 12, mixed with people I've just met. There are also lots of stupid games people play on facebook and they make all those updates. As if I care that someone just beat their score in solitude jewelry boom poker face. jeshus.

phoenix 10.13.2009 10:03 PM

That said I dont really have a problem with people who like networking sites.. Just personally they aren't that great to me and there is other stuff online I like doing more. :)
