No, you're not. I didn't voice it as many people love them here. |
Yesterday I heard Atlas in a clip on Top Gear, I was happy.
I don't care at all if a band gets hyped or not as long as I like (even just a bit) what they do, and for bands I don't like I care even less. That said, it's all "relative" , coz I wish everybody in the world knew the bands I really like, so I guess everyone judges the "hype" (too much/not enough) a band gets starting from how much he likes them. Did I make a point in those mumbled lines? |
I've tried listening to that record a couple of times and found it just average, nothing more. I'm not saying that people shouldn't like it or anything, that's their taste and their choice, but really, it's nothing special like the media make it out to be. I even find it a little 'coffee table' for my liking.

Yes I understand, the thoughts I expressed were on the subject of "hype" in general, not specifically on battles.
Your post confirms my thought, i.e. : if you think a band is nothing special, you will think that they don't deserve any "special" hype. I mean, it's always a consequence of your taste. (your=generic "you"). Sometimes I love bands that are, from a "logic/objective" pov, quite bad if not rubbish altogether. But still, something "clicks" and I love them - so I'd love to see them "hyped" :D, also becuz more hype results in more tv appearances/shows/tours all things that increase the chances to get to see them play and stuff. ps. as usual, my ideas on all the "hype" thing may be a bit influenced by the fact that here in italy the "media" cover stuff in a totally different way than in uk/usa, here you could see the Atlas video only after midnight in the "alternative" bits of music tvs and stuff, they're not that overexposed. |
Yeah, but I'm not a generic you. I'm better than that 'cause I'm me.

 Come back to italy and I'll vote for you. |
fuck hype, fuck trendyness bands to like, fuck the im way too cool to listen to that, fuck i prefer their older stuff, fuck all that shit right now.. mirrored is a damn fine album, my favourite of 2007. its great!
|
Calm down, Paula, I said clearly that people's own personal taste is just that. I just can't hear what's so special about this record, that's all.
|
porkmaraas, I made a list of my top 50 albums and that battles disc is like # 31 or something.. and I made a note that EVERYONE's going to say it's # 1 even though it's not THAT great.. .so, I'm with you.. sleeping people's "growing" is about a million times better, if you like math rock.
But yeah.. that Battles disc.. they're just not very good songwriters are they? Really, their producer and their drummer made that album worth listening to, but the songwriting is really inconsistent, there are songs on there that dont' go ANYWHERE. And the vocals are terrible and annoying. On the other hand, the drummer is REALLY REALLY REALLY good, and "Atlas" does deserve the hype it's recieved; great great song. And the second to last track is also great. But all in all, it's not even the Battles' best work. I dunno. I feel conflicted. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a 7 to be certain.. but a LOT of the parts on the album sound really fucking stupid. I don't know how else to put it; certain riffs and keyboard lines just sound ridiculous and out-of-place. I think most of the album sounds like sections from really good songs, but Battles just hasn't figured out how to put it all together yet. Seriously, go listen to Sleeping People instead... |
Sleeping People'g "growing" is a really good album but I don't like the "sound" of it :( .
|
I liked the Battles album a lot.
