where did fugazi get their name?

Everyneurotic 05.22.2008 10:43 AM

ian was reading a book about vietnam at the time, and the term came popping in a lot, so he liked it. it was used for a situation of extreme trouble.

he found out what it meant literally when they toured singapour or one of such countries, a fan told him it meant "fucked-up, got ambushed, zipped in".

Rob Instigator 05.22.2008 10:44 AM

ahhh! coool, like other military terms

FUBAR - fucked up beyond all recognition

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 05.22.2008 12:09 PM

The Warlocks, after having had too much confusion in the local scene over another established band with the same name, decided to change their name. The group sat down together, smoked some DMT and attempted to go through the dictionary for ideas. however, the way the story goes, no body could read a word of this dictionary, every page was all blurry to everyone, they tried but alas, nothing. And then, jerry, as they were turning the pages, noticed one word standing out, glowing even, clear and bright, "Grateful Dead" and suddenly it was the only word that any of them could see, and so they all saw it as a sign.

"Pop music, in fact, seems to be an OED weakness. On March 10, the online version added the proper noun "Deadhead" to denote a fan of the Grateful Dead-nearly 10 years after the band's lead guitarist, Jerry Garcia, died."

LittlePuppetBoy 05.22.2008 01:33 PM

Melvins-after a co-worker (who everyone hated) of King Buzzo's at a local supermarket

Minor Threat-they were young, of small physical stature, therefore a "minor threat" to society

Bad Brains-after a Ramones song

Dead Kennedys-supposedly meant to express the "death of the American Dream"

Neu!-German for "new"

the U-men-supposedly from an Alfred Jarry peom

Pere Ubu-from the main character of Alfred Jarry's play "Ubu Roi"

myth.

there's no clear claim to their name's origin, but hr and dr know had claimed that bad means good and brains means intellect; they wanted a band with a positive message that could make you think.

Rob Instigator 05.22.2008 02:43 PM

Cantankerous 05.22.2008 02:58 PM

fugazifan 05.22.2008 02:59 PM

dellilah-it was better than the previous shitty name-insignificant. and that was the only thing after almost a year of deliberation that we could all agree on.
and she is one of the most coniving fuckers in the bible

mine too, i dont remember where i found out about this-maybe from an interview or a video.

copper 05.22.2008 03:16 PM

i'm pretty sure Big Black is called after the short story of Big Black who was as the name says big and black and he raped a woman.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 05.22.2008 03:19 PM

no big black is just a name to sound imposing

Rob Instigator 05.22.2008 03:21 PM

albini has said that he wanted to sound as menacing as possible for his extremely virulent and conforntational band, and that in america, the words BIG BLACK scare more people than anything

i didnt really look it up after i saw the story so i thought that was its origin.

Pookie 05.22.2008 04:12 PM

The Jesus and Mary Chain:

The band has said it was taken from an offer on a breakfast cereal packet, to send away for a gold Jesus and Mary chain.

Rob Instigator 05.22.2008 04:14 PM

I wonder where they looked to find their tepid wack-ass sound?

copper 05.22.2008 04:14 PM

^ hmm that might be more true than what i said. (pookie)

Pookie 05.22.2008 04:18 PM

Cheap Trick got their name by asking a Ouija Board.

Pookie 05.22.2008 04:24 PM

REM is an acronym for rear end men.

Rob Instigator 05.22.2008 04:42 PM

hahahah!

Muddy Waters, born Mckinley Morganfield (sp?) was called Muddy as a kid by his relatives ebcause he liked to play in mud all the time. He changed it to Muddy Water, and then to Muddy Waters.

LittlePuppetBoy 05.22.2008 05:31 PM

the Jesus Lizard-after a common nickname for the basilisk, a species of lizard that can actually run on water

NOFX-pretty much taken from Negative FX, a Boston hardcore punk band

Ramones-one origin of the name is that it was a fake name Paul McCartney would use when checking into hotels while he was in the Beatles (or something like that)

Linkin Park-after Lincoln Park somewhere in California, but the dumbfucks in the band were too stupid to spell it properly

Motorhead-a term for an avid speed user

B-52s-after a 1950's hair style for women

Seneca's Medea seems more fitting for Courtney. Courtney is very like Medea, methinks. It's all gravy though, we all love Medea, right?

Kurt Schwitters.

And the Smiths, to my mind, would probably have got their name from the utter ubiquity of the name 'Smith' in the UK rather than some high-falutin' thing like a (shit) Kerouac book.

i didnt say they got their name from JK but they got the line pretty girls make graves....
it would be so much easier if you listened:cool:

pbradley 05.22.2008 06:42 PM

I've always wanted to play under a band called Broken E Strings after the Unwound song. Mostly because all my guitars are missing the first string because of this very reason.

atsonicpark 05.22.2008 07:04 PM

NOFX stands for "No Fucking straight edge", by the way. I wish I didn't know that.

batreleaser 05.22.2008 07:10 PM

rapeman is from the jap comic book about a superhero who rapes, which is prolly where the big black confusion came from.

the greatful dead name story is the best ive heard so far.

Death & the Maiden 05.23.2008 01:48 AM

Einstuerzende Neubauten - German for "collapsing new buildings".
The Verlaines - From the poet Paul Verlaine. I wanted to call my band The Verlaines (after Tom Verlaine), but I was disappointed to find it had already been taken.

According to a book about them that I've read years ago they got it from a movie when the Reid brothers spent a whole summertime getting stoned and doing nothing but watching tv.

Death & the Maiden 05.23.2008 03:34 AM

I thought The Jesus & Mary Chain's name was chosen for its shock value - not too outrageous, but enough to make people notice.

SonicBebs 05.23.2008 03:37 AM

the B52's thing is from the bomber, not a haircut.

But i may just have 'humour' turned off on this computer today

Fat Mike says this on the band's website: "I said NO FX after a band who had put out one record and broken up called Negative FX. Mike agreed that it was the best one so far. There seemed to be a lot of gimmicky bands around at the time. We like to think that our name meant we were against that shit."

atsonicpark 05.23.2008 07:20 AM

weird, guess that was just one of those urban legends then.

The Click: founded in the bay from the original Most Valuable Players krew, e-40, b-legit and D-shot. Later to be full of yay area rappers the way nwa was all the rappers from compton/watts in the mid-80s, the click is a reference obviously to the word "clique" in reference to "the group that i'm with the click, shiggity shat legit, family oriented gang related its shit," but in spelling it "ick" rather then "que", is a reference to the sound of a handgun being loaded.

that was just a rumor. the band members have stated in interviews (i don't know why i read nofx interviews) that nofx means, basically, no special effects. just bass, guitar, drums and really shitty singing. i wish i didn't know that.

they seem to keep changing their story on how they got the name for the band.
