Any random ass guy can come up with some interesting humor, that doesn't mean he constantly plays to packed houses. No, I never criticized him for not being a successful comedian. I "criticized" him for not coming up with anything funny or original himself. Big difference. Success has nothing to do with influencing my opinions in the least -- talent does. See, even if you "hate" Tom Green, it still seems silly to outright dismiss him, since he's a true original, and obviously a comedic genius. It's pointless to criticize him, when he is in a league of his own. I was just asking Rob if he'd come up with any comedic innovations lately. anyway, i tried watching some episodes, and while i find that the theory of "comedy is a man in trouble" is generally true, these here are not men, but worms, and watching worms being crushed by passersby is just not funny to me. it's kinda like watching a snuff video, but the slaughter is psychological.

i do get how some people might find humor in that, but i find it too... cynical? nihilistic? can't put my finger on it but the watching became unpleasant after a couple of episodes.

they have another show that made me laugh when they are nazis who begin to think that maybe they are "the baddies"-- but i haven't seen much of that and i don't recall other clips that got my attention. i'll have to re-check it, but i'm currently caught in the absurdity of korean dramas and their irritating slowness.

Interestingly, that's also the only sketch I can remember from the program.

Rob's opinion is completely valid to me -- I don't outright dismiss anyone's opinion... buuuuuuuut Rob does have a habit of outright dismissing TONS of things, often for completely ridiculous reasons -- this band "sucks" because they don't "rock", this comedian uses "shock tactics" so he is automatically "shitty", etc. So, um. I think the deal with the characters in Peep Show that while they lack almost any redeeming qualities they have such numerous bad qualities that we can see our own worse behaviour reflected in them, and then we laugh at ourselves. But I can understand this kind of humour may go right over the heads of the pompous, egomaniacal, or unself-aware.

to me it was just an occasionally quite funny show about 20 something life in the 00's. outside of peep show i find both of them a bit douchey. i liked how uncool robert webb was, how he didn't give a fuck and would rather sit down and read the times and have a cup of tea. i liked his "young fogeyness", until he was on the big fat quiz of the year and he said he had bought a susan boyle album. and it wasn't a joke, he had actually bought it. and sat down and listened to it, and i pictured him thinking "time for a relaxing treat, mmm yes this is quite reasonable, talented singing. 12 quid well spent" and my image of him was shattered and all that young fogeyness became conservative douchery. but he's the kind of guy you think "seems like a decent bloke" which is the whole point of the person he betrays himself as.

yet some of peep show, the first 5 seasons have moments of really great comedy, better than anything else apart from the thick of it and xavier that i've seen this decade.

I saw this Neil Hamburger edition of What's in My Bag on youtube and he got a Kenny Rogers tape to replace the one that was stuck in his car for seven years. As well as his own country album purely for the sake of plugging it to the audience. Crazy comb over.

I prefer comedians who do their laugh magic through words alone. I feel a good comedian should be hilarious even if all you can do is hear the sound of his voice alone. Of course that is just a personal bias.

I don't even have much of a sense of humour. Occasionally I get lucky and someone finds something I say funny. That leaves me plenty of time to decide what amuses me and what doesn't, peep show being a series that does job.

does that mean that if one strives to be as plain, humble and self-aware as you evidently are --O Holy One-- some day the humor of this particular show may strike one between the eyes, like a bolt of enlightenment?
