I suppose I really dont know enough about American politics, especially of the times back then , to really grasp it . What is an anarcho-socialist society ? Why was it needed then ?
Ha, thanks for replying though , I've wanted to ask someone about it for a long while !

This seems as good as any jumping off point for the concept and related variations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarian_socialism

Yeah, the book does seem to speak to American politics more than global. I wouldn't pigeonhole it to the time it was written though, as both Steve and I noted a lot of it is spookily prescient. I read it nearly two decades before he is reading it now (yet two decades after it was written still) and somehow we both found it eerily current.

on book 6 (of 7) of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series.

this would be the second time reading the entire series and the 4th or 5th for the first three books.

demonrail666 06.17.2008 12:58 PM

I always wanted to marry a woman that proof reads for the New Yorker. Always thought there was something unutterably romantic about the idea.

I really want to read that. Is it any good?

acousticrock87 06.18.2008 02:19 PM

Ulysses for the last 6 months. I feel smart when I hold it and dumb when I read it.

Rob Instigator 06.18.2008 02:21 PM

from what I read, Ulysses and Finneganss wake are best if read aloud by an Irish person. the words/sounds make more sense that way.

acousticrock87 06.18.2008 02:51 PM

I've tried sounding it out in an Irish accent in my head, and it does help. But in the end I just end up reading everything three times, and eventually it all makes sense. It's a lot of fucking work, but it is an amazing book despite all that.

Danny Himself 06.18.2008 02:55 PM

just get an annotation book read it side by side, it's quite enlightening

this one is kind of a classic:

one of the things joyce does is inject the whole of irish history and western culture into the brains of his subjects, and then he puts a microphone inside their heads, so the book helps you understand what they were thinking about, making you gain a 3D perspective so to speak.

acousticrock87 06.19.2008 02:52 PM

I plan to read it again like that, but I decided I would read it through once on my own. It's quite an experience, and you can only do it once.

I have been reading up a bit on each chapter after I finish, though. And that one you recommended I've considered buying several times, as it looks amazing (it has maps!), but it's about $30 minimum and I rarely have that much at once.

Cantankerous 06.24.2008 07:52 PM

still.

good book.

!@#$%! 06.24.2008 07:57 PM

Cantankerous 06.24.2008 07:57 PM
