Watched a few clips of the Beatles 50th anniversary tribute to the Beatles' first Ed Sullivan Show appearance. Mostly shit, can't help but think if John and/or George were alive they would have naysayed much of the smarmier elements and kicked some ass.

How did you already get to watch this?

We will be watching in a few hours when the CBS Special airs. Hard to believe it's mostly shit if they are re-airing their first Ed Sullivan Show appearance and the reaction / news coverage that went along with it. May not be my favorite era of the Beatles, but I will watch and see.

It appears I may have been too hopeful......just five minutes in and so far it's been complete CRAP.

May have posted the above too soon: Jeff Lynne and Joe Walsh just knocked one out of the park.

Wish they would let Jeff Lynne sing all of the songs!

hirsute_biped 02.09.2014 10:54 PM

I think it was pre-taped and a few bits made it out on the news services online. Didn't see Lynne and Walsh though, I'll have to look for that. This could have been a million times greater.

^^^your so correct!

What infuriated me, I was expecting them to air the original broadcast of the Ed Sullivan show (at least the performances) and then show some of the newscast from around America the day after. Playing 30 seconds of a song from the original broadcast and then switching to a live on stage performer was horrid.

Thoroughly enjoyed Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart!

I think the whole thing stinks of "hey lets find yet another way to fleece the Beatles and a dozen other artists at the same time"

Could be my bias. Honestly, its a big deal and a big anniversary but whenever TV specials get involved I think it totally destroyed the integrity of any of it. Also, lets be honest, they're just milking the sadder reality that all those people from the 1960s/70s are now in their 50s-60s-70s and make for a great CBS audience to rummage through nostalgia and memory lane enough to totally miss the point. Honestly, was anybody under the age of 30 even remotely interested in it? Probably not. If anything, they may have signed, sealed, and delivered the Beatles into the 21st century obscurity of "my grandparent's favorite band."

There. I said it.

There's a DVD of the Sullivan appearances if you want to see it. I've been trying to think of who should have played:

Flaming Lips: (have already done credible covers of Strawberry, Lucy & Walrus
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Yer Blues
Tom Waits: Mr. Kite
Portishead: Tomorrow Never Knows
Neil Young: A Day In The Life with feedback ending & Paul
Lee Ranaldo & The Dust: Within You Without You
Led Zep/Black Sabb with Merzbow: I Want You, She's So Heavy

Who else?
