ATL = autumn with good weather , like cold with a clear blue sky 'and/or) some healthy snow
BMR =mean autum , like with powercuts and thunderstorms and lightning.. no? |
ATL came out the day of the annual spring art show when I was in high school. I remember picking it up, going back to school for the evening viewings for the public and listening to it on my headphones thinking, "Holy shit, these people around me don't have a clue."

It definitely has an autumnal vibe. It's probably their most mysterious and least understood major release. It's big with fans of old Jodie Foster flicks because there seem to be lyrical and cover-art references to Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Also beatnik literature fans dig the references to Ginsberg and Kerouac ("blues and haikus"). Yeah, I'd have to include it in my Top 3 or 4 of Sonic Youth's major releases. It should be listened to in its entirety on specific occasions.
