ROBE. - 'Time Dilation' CDr £5.5(UK)/£6(EU)/£6.
25(World)
"Massively epic new release from this American duo of stark echoing multi-instrumental drone, layers of charcoal to black emptiness that has gathered pretty solid sound throughout the releases they've unleashed last year, this is bleak, not harsh, just dark, and unrelenting for it's immense near 80 minute duration... Fans of Sunn O))), Robedoor, and occult ritual nightmares will zone into this. Limited to 150. Pro duplicated with on disc print.

my friend j. was irritated towards this seemingly "king of the scene" mentality thurston seems to have, from time to time. then one drunken day he realized "well, if ya think about it, he is kinda the king of the scene". haha. maybe not literally...but might as well be in some circles. the kids make em that way. maybe not a bad thing. hes certainly the eyes and ears for some folks search on new sounds.

i dont chase down everything thurston name drops anymore, simple because there is tooooo much of it. and alot of the time, i dont dig (awesome color, pagoda...no need in my mind for such artists when we already have stooges, nirvana, muhoney)...but then again, thanks to thurston i DO dig magik markers, double leopards, wolf eyes (sometimes).

the main thing i learned from thurston was to give every artist a chance, depsite preconcieved notions that may come from genres they classify themselves/are classified by others by. it became cool to check out black metal bands, noise bands, folk artists, whatever...in high school i had little time for anything associated with "metal" (i thought it was all way toooo silly, i still think alot of it is, but nowhere near "all"). i was into some stuff then i'd now id consider "avant garde", but hardley realized it at the time (some of SY's stuff for sure, throbbig gristle, etc) < it was just an arsty brutal attack on most of the tastes my classmates had at the time. i knew i liked it, but wasnt completely sure why yet. course later came sun ra and coltrane and miles, some of the most "punk rock" shit ever. fuck the exploited. haha

kurt may have planted the seeds for that. he certainly got me interested in the youth, a long , long time ago. i still like alot of the bands kurt turned me on to the best (scratch acid, melvins, sonic youth)...

i also like some bands ive turned myself onto through my own research (ghoul detail, red krayola, crass, pere ubu, pharoah sanders, rabbit girls...whatever.)

im ranting, because thats what swa(y) does.

have fun,

-s.

thurson has fucking amazing taste, all those bands you mentioned youve discovered through your own tastes im sure he fully endorses too.

read his bull tongue column with byron cooley, he has the sickest taste in the world, just EVERYthing.

I thought this thread read "Thurston digs Rob"

ahh, pipe dreams. we could be best friends...

Byron Coley reviews Robe in the lastes issue of The Wire, thought you might like a gander.

Robe
When We're Dead And What We'll Remember

Another wildly nice release from this prolific Indiana based Noise drone duo.
The music here has a metallic sheen and feels as though it was created by rubbing automobiles together in deep space. The pieces don't necessarily make a lot of lateral motion, but they buff up and down like a blowfish, reminding us that even drones can have a menacing edge.

atsonicpark 09.24.2009 09:51 AM

Thank you, I never saw that post. I was about to bump this thread to
ask if anyone had the review from the Wire, because someone just told me we were in there but I never saw it. THanks man!

Derek 09.24.2009 10:28 AM

Aww man, the one time I don't buy The Wire, Robe. is in it!

atsonicpark 01.24.2010 09:29 PM

Thurston has rad tastes ,especially when it comes too who he collobrates with..i am listening to "thurston moore, okkyung lee, ikue mori trio" right now..super trippy...as what SYRfox mentioned though..i don't know if he ever said he likes Marilyn Manson...but sonic youth did collabarate in doing a score for the film "The heart is deceitful above all things"...great score..fucked up film..not really entertainment..i liked it though ..it got a point across..Manson's acting was done very well...
