Well, you got that right. I don't go out much. But I also believe that collecting music can be about the art of preserving it, too. And no, music IS to be looked at. Cover art! Colored vinyl!

porkmarras 09.13.2006 09:17 AM

Let's face it,the first thing that i look out for is the music. If the music is crap the cover art can go into the rubbish bin.Preserving and archiving is all well and fine but from the sort of records that you say you buy i think that there isn't much that hasn't been preserved all too well many times before.BURN YOUR DOORS RECORDS GMKU!!BURN THEM!!

Heeey Hip Priest, how much for the Kopyright Liberation Front LP?

Never seen one before, must have!

It's the same as posting on a thread to show the world the 10 eps that you own by a band in a bad quality photograph.Pointless,a bit like:'Show me your willy and i'll show you mine'.

gmku 09.13.2006 09:25 AM

I don't pretend to preserve my music for posterity, just for my own needs.

I would burn my Beatles records before I'd bring a flame close to my Doors stuff. No. Jim and his naked Indian friend have paid a visit and told me I am doing the right thing.

Kind of fun though, showing off willies, ain't it?

Yeah. When you are confident that it'll make an impression,of course.

gmku 09.13.2006 09:31 AM

I have to admit, I've often bought music based on great cover art, sometimes not even knowing what the music sounds like. I've been pleasantly surprised more often than disappointed, and this way of album buying does get one out of one's comfort zone sometimes. Hard to do all the time, of course, but sometimes when you don't know what you want, it's an interesting way to pick up on something new.

porkmarras 09.13.2006 09:36 AM

That's true,i'm not saying the opposite.Hundreads of times i've bought a record simply because i liked the cover,i knew the label, there was a musician on it that i had an interest in etc etc.But if the music is crap,it's crap.I should start a thread about good covers that contain crap records, actually.

gmku 09.13.2006 09:38 AM

True. The music is why we buy the thing in the first place, no denying that. It's so excellent in those cases when both come together--great music, great art.

I love great cover art and I have several display stands for albums I love.

I don't have a picture, but a list...

I think I have a good collection for a 15 year old person (16 in a three weeks, okay)...

Note that at the time I write I still don't have added the two records I bought today (The Double - Loose in the Air and Radiohead - Amnesiac)
