There is a very, very large difference between 'correct' formal English and the general vernacular/ idiomatic/ sociolectical English used in general conversation. You are, of course, technically correct. However, I have never known anyone use the noun 'American' to refer to anything other than a citizen of the USA.

In fact, I took the liberty of having a cursory glance at dictionary.com which lists several uses of the word, both in the context you speak of and the more common use.

well, the french word you are probably thinking of ("états-unien" instead of "américain") is really rarely used...
i believe it's not comparable to the usage of the portuguese "estadunidense", the italian "statunitense" (i did not know about these two until today, though) and of course the spanish "estadounidense"...

sure america is a continent like europe or africa, continents inhabited by europeans and africans. well, people from the american continent call themselves americans.

the problem comes from the fact that
estados unidos do brasil = brasil
estados unidos mexicanos = mexico
united states of america = .... ?

the name came up when the rest of the american continent was under spanish, french or english rule, so it wasn't "officially" anything.

get used to it, the gringos have monopolized the name because the took it first... bizarre, as if there was a country called "united states of europe" which did not include the whole continent, but there you go.

Quite a bit. I used to know more but I haven't spoke it in forever. I only talk to my grandpa and grandma in German as my mother has forgotten almost all of it.
