Uh.... yeah. Had to read that, in hopes that there'd be some hot picture of her. Turns out there is! That picture of her licking the ice cream cone is sexy as hell. Otherwise.. Typical boring shill interview I skimmed over except when she talked about that masterpiece After Hours being horrible and I had to laugh.

"new" WOODEN WAND album on Ecstatic Peace!, May 21

Hello hooray,

I'm very pleased to announce that the long-threatened Wooden Wand album of home recordings and demos will be released by our good friends at Ecstatic Peace! on May 21st. The album - titled Hard Knox, or "Are You Sure Hank Jr Done It This Way?" will feature 14 previously unreleased songs dating as far back as 1999. The album will also include song-by-song liner notes by yours truly.

I'm also preparing demos for the next JJT album, which we hope to start recording in the early part of this new year.

Stay tuned here for more information, or head over to www.ecstaticpeace.com for updates on this and many other fine releases.

Stay in school,

Toth

The bad news:

Ecstatic Peace can't afford the Magic Markers anymore!

Happy New Year! Drag City welcomes to the stable the dynamic duo known as Magik Markers! Their bone-splitting live shows have long been a favorite of ours, so finally we got off our bed-sores and cart-wheeled sweatily towards an arranged marriage of sorts with these freaky kids. Fortunately, they weren’t scared by our show of enthusiasm, just amused — and as inspired as ever. Their incredible new record, Balf Quarry, is the answer to a lot of unasked questions out there, an answer that's going to unsettle a bunch of you. And naturally, the rest of you lot are gonna laugh like hyenas. But since it's all about the (fucked up) music, who cares? How to care? And what's up? Get into the new Magik Markers in May to wonder these questions with adequate! justification.

The good news:
They can still afford MV&EE

Sounds like all good news to me.

caught their set at the Cake Shop last night in NYC, 'back in the basement' Matt said, playing as a duo with Jeremy from Woods sitting in on drums for most of the set. The huge Neil Young arena rock show is pretty much not to be heard, last night much of the set was very relaxed and spaced, reminding me more of the early Medicine Show tours. Enjoyed it at any rate, other than the yammering yahoos who - even though the space was half empty - needed to cluster around the front and talk to each other at loud volume, until some guy told them to shut up.

If I can get a nap after work I might try and see them tonite in w'burg.

who says it's good to be alive?

alright. alright. i'm in northampton still. almost done recording demos. it sounds quite righteous. yesterday we all went to eat lunch with thurston and kesin. it was great! we wrote a new song called "kids stuff" and drank lots of coffee. johnny and i took pictures with kesin out in the dirty snow and on the broken ice. oh and we ate herrell's till i thought i was gonna puke. burnt sugar and butter is the best. we went back and listened to records and thurston gave me his extra copy of kim fowely's outrageous! thanks dude! chinese water torture!!!

we got to work at the studio around 8 and i finished the vox on all but two songs.i was a little bit smashed towards the end, so i might have to clean up some songs. justin said it was good, so maybe it's ok. we'll see. we'll see.

we drove back from greenfield really late and blasted blank generation all the way home. i think max was annoyed by my drunken screaming! today i want to go to some more thrift stores and eat more herrell's!

James Toth to Issue Two Wooden Wand LPs, One with Track-by-Track Commentary!

Miss Wooden Wand? Well, perhaps James Jackson Toth does, too, because he’s apparently releasing two albums from back in that nostalgic era, before he got backing vocals and fancy guitars and before he ditched the Wooden Wand moniker.
So first, March 31 marks the release of Born Bad, an edition of 500 hand-pressed, hand-screened, signed-on-request, vinyl-only albums. He promises that this album is the reason he was kicked out of the major leagues. The album is co-released on Olympia’s People in a Position to Know label and Toth’s own label, Mad Monk. It’s available for $15.
Then, Ecstatic Peace is releasing a record of his demos on May 21, titled Hard Knox or ‘Are You Sure Hank Jr Done It This Way?’: Home Recordings 1999-2007. And here’s the kicker: It has song-by-song commentary by Toth. I shit you not. I’m excited, and I hope he’s drunk.

The Entrance Band, Jemina's Blog, Mirror/Dash

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
THE ENTRANCE BAND SIGN WITH ECSTATIC PEACE AND UNIVERSAL MOTOWN AND CELEBRATE SIGNING BY SUPPORTING CAT POWER IN L.A. ON FEBRUARY 11TH; EAGERLY AWAITED LABEL DEBUT SET FOR LATER THIS YEAR

Universal Motown and Ecstatic Peace Records have announced the signing of The Entrance Band. The Los Angeles-based trio will release their as-yet-untitled debut later this year. Founder of Ecstatic Peace Records, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, says, "The Entrance Band's new music is the most alluring and, yes, entrancing vibe I've yet to experience in this new age. A soundtrack for the new groove."

On Wednesday, February 11th, The Entrance Band will join Cat Power for an eagerly anticipated double bill at Los Angeles' Avalon. An additional slate of live dates will be unveiled shortly.

The Entrance Band kicks out a veritable explosion of mind-bending, skyscraping high-volume electric power. The trio - which includes singer/guitarist Guy Blakeslee, drummer Derek James and bassist Paz Lenchantin (late of A Perfect Circle and Zwan) - set out for new musical frontiers with their full-on melding of psychedelic freakout and punk rock intensity.

The Entrance Band line-up made its recorded debut on 2006's "PRAYER OF DEATH," the last of Blakeslee's solo releases as "Entrance," and the first to feature all original compositions. Pitchfork praised the album's "combination of blues riffs and psychedelic drone," noting that by "creating a maelstrom from which (Blakeslee) can wail feverishly, the band isn't just loud, it's intense." "Blakeslee is downright exultant in his howls and bends and slides," declared PopMatters, commending Lenchatin and James for "(augmenting) nearly every cut on this dense, sometimes overwhelming album, a multitude of eddying sounds providing a contact buzz of mystic overload."

The Entrance Band has also proven a remarkably captivating live act, having built up a notable underground following in California including sold-out shows at the Troubadour in L.A. and the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, and having shared stages with an array of like-minded artists, including Cat Power, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks.

Violent Soho Sign With Thurston Moores Label

Brisbane grunge revivalists Violent Soho have recently inked a deal with Thurston Moore's record label Ecstatic Peace/Universal. And you thought your boss was cool?
A Speak N Spell Press Release reveals:
Hello, good people of the world!
Today’s breaking news...
Brisbane's Violent Soho have just signed an impressive deal with Ecstatic Peace/Universal – a totally ace USA label headed up by none other than Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, the Godfather of American Indie.
This of course is any rock band with a Marshall stack and Fender Jag's biggest dream!! So it comes as no surprise to hear the band are over the moon at the opportunity to be backed by such a man, not to mention the prospect of spending time in the USA recording and touring their musical wares.
Word is that a newly recorded album - based on the already Australian released record We Don't Belong Here – will be due in the third quarter of '09 for worldwide release.
But fear not, for the band are eager to keep their roots here and will be playing many shows throughout Australia this year.

The Entrance Band Sign to Ecstatic Peace!; Thurston Moore Says They Are the "Soundtrack for the New Groove"
Ever since Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! inked a deal with Universal, it’s experienced some major changes. Seems like now it is signing either ultra-hippie bands like MV & EE that maybe my dad would like or cute, young "punky" bands like Be Your Own Pet that maybe my younger sister would like. Meanwhile, the noisier jams are kept in the background. Ecstatic Peace! still releases limited-edition cassettes and LPs of some of the more wild sounds being made, but most of this isn’t exactly part of the label’s roster.
Ecstatic Peace’s latest signing is The Entrance Band. Comprised of singer/guitarist Guy Blakeslee, drummer Derek James, and bassist Paz Lenchantin (Zwan, A Perfect Circle), The Entrance Band are currently at Infrasonic Sound Recording (Los Angeles) working on their Ecstatic debut album, the follow-up to 2006’s Prayer of Death.
According to Infrasonic’s Jeff Ehrenberg: “Tracking the band altogether in the live room, just as they would perform on stage, is really capturing their overall energy very well. Guy, Derek and Paz are locking together and playing off each other way tight.” Meanwhile, 50-year-old Thurston Moore says, "The Entrance Band’s new music is the most alluring and, yes, entrancing vibe I’ve yet to experience in this new age. A soundtrack for the new groove."
The record is due later this year, with live dates expected before its release.

I opened up Merzbow's yellow hyper balls on Adobe Audition, singled out the most treble heavy section, amplified it ten fold, layered it with a similarly volumed bass frequency and left it on an endless repeat till I gave myself tinitus.

Wooden Wand aka WAND aka James Jackson Toth - new albums, CMJ pics & The Jescoes

Last year, the axman known as Wooden Wand (a.k.a. James Jackson Toth) shed his moniker for the Rykodisc-released Waiting in Vain. Also as James Jackson Toth, he played last year's CMJ, with a stop at the Brooklyn Vegan day party at Pianos (that's where the pictures in this post come from).
Now, in early '09, he's back with two albums under the name of WAND: the first, Born Bad, will be co-released by People In A Position To Know Records and Wand's Mad Monk label on March 31st, in limited-edition, LP-only style - "Only 500 copies, repress unlikley."
Then, Hard Knox or, "Are You Sure Hank Jr. Done it This Way?", a disc of demos and home recordings, will come out on Ecstatic Peace, May 26th, 2009.
And all signs point to Toth's next offering, a just-recorded group album, introducing another name to the mix: new band The Jescos (feat. "Timothy Bracy, formerly of The Mendoza Line along with members of alt-country faves Glossary and We Were The States"). Read about the band's recording adventures on his Toth Tells the Truth blog.

Toth remarked about his January 25th Daytrotter session on his Myspace blog:
"[The session's] exclusive covers of tunes by Baptist Generals, Aerosmith, Charlie Walker and Roy Buchanan were recorded in the midst of tour on the occasion of my 30th birthday, aka the worst day of my entire life (so far). Dig you the dispatch from oblivion. And the cute cartoon of me looking all lean and clean. While you're there, check out some other Daytrotter sessions. The TK Webb and Damien Jurado ones are especially terrific."

Fresh Squeezed: Wand

jason - Posted on 17 March 2009

There was a time when you heard the phrase "home recordings" you would become a little leery of what you were purchasing. However, I think a lot of that changed when Bon Iver took over the scene with his debut collection of what were essentially home recordings. I have also been drawn to the raw, intimate nature of the a more stripped down collection. So naturally I was ecstatic (pun intended) when I received the forthcoming collection of demos, outtakes, and home recordings from James Jackson Toth (aka Wooden Wand, aka Wand). Most of the recordings on Hard Knox (Ecstatic Peace, May 26th) were done at his then-home in Knoxville, TN between October 2002 and January of 2007, just prior to the retirement of the Wooden Wand name.
Unlike what you may be expecting these are complete songs, complete thoughts, and when grouped together become their own album. Actually they become more than just an album, this is a view into the hidden sounds and thoughts of one of the more important figures in independent music today. In his letter to the press Wand had this to say, "I stand behind these songs as “snapshots” and enjoy them despite their many flaws. I hope you do, too."

Stratospheric Passenger LP
E#13d

This is an LP issue of a limited CD Servile Sect issued in 2007 on the Sounds of Battle and Souvenir Collecting label. Based in and around Humboldt, CA Servile Sect are the true investigation of psychedelic dimensionality.

"... bizarre, and hauntingly beautiful slab of alien black metal. Not sure what else to call it, it's definitely black metal, but it's weirdly blissy and electronic sounding, more like Alcest or Amesoeurs than old school grimnity, but even then, it's still weirder, like it must have been played by robots or insects, or some massive black metal machine assembled beneath the surface of some mysterious moon. You can almost picture some mechanical monstrosity, pieces of human flesh, various organs, somehow built into the machine's inner workings, everything grinding and sparking all in a Herculean effort to produce this glorious droning buzzing blackness. A cloud of black buzz that will eventually drift through space and time swallowing any planets in its path, and extinguishing all life it encounters. Heck, even the cover of the record is the view from some sort of alien lander, looking out and the cold dead ground of some red planet, as if any minute some huge horrible black beast will lurch into view over the horizon, dashing all of our ideas about said planet being uninhabited.

The sound of Servile Sect is epic, and majestic, the guitars glistening sheets of sound, the surface of that sound peppered with bits of electronic shimmer, causing the long drawn out riffery to reflect and refract, tiny little sonic events occurring every second, the surface alive and constantly squirming and changing color, but viewed from afar, it's simply a blown out undulating buzz. Those guitars are digitized and processed, spread into thick smears of warm glowing whir, the riffs barely discernible beneath the constant roar of Servile Sect's sonic swirl

The vocals add just more buzz to the mix, howling and wailing, but stretched into streaks of sonic violence, and drums, assuming there are any, are buried, festering beneath layer after layer of crushing guitar fuzz, emitting noxious rhythms that don't so much blast or pound as they do explode into tiny squalls of still more buzz.

Occasionally, the buzz abates, leaving the guitar to sway lazily, the notes ringing out, the guitars lurking in the distance, but it's never long before the lilting melody is engulfed by a colossal buzzing roar, and the band locks into another extended psychfuzzblackdrone.

Another out of left field immediate AQ black bliss classic. Fans of the new wave of droned out dreamy metal, black and otherwise: Nadja, Angelic Process, Ameseours, Alcest, etc. will dig this, as will dronelords who like their drones heavy and loud and yeah, a bit metallic.."

http://www.ecstaticpeace.com/resize....0&max_width=60 MENSTRUATION SISTERS
Samantha, My Wack Panther LP
E#4d - edition of 400

"Unlike anything book or animal, the Menstruation Sisters destroy wholly" - Thurston Moore, Sonic Youth.

Menstruation Sisters hail from Sydney, Australia. Basically a duo comprised of wildboy poet ululationist and guitar strangler Nick Kamiussis (aka Rizili aka Riz) and OZ wonderkid Oren Ambarchi (Sunn 0)), Burial Chamber, Grave Temple, John Zorn etc etc), and sometimes aided by Brendan Walls and others. Their first LP, Ma, was in an edition of 100 copies, all of which had razor blades, balloons and hypodermic needles applied to one side. As an objet d'art it became a highly desirable item for noise believers (and was recently reissued - sans appliques - by No Fun Productions). Every once in a while an LP drops out of nowhere only to further confuse whomever is fortunate enough to grip it. 2005 saw the Holy Africa 7" on White Denim, in 2001 the infamous Goog LP on Saucerlike, in 1999 the Dead At Slugs LP on Menlo Park and in 1998 the Triple Bogey On A Ma Par Hole 3 X 7". All of these are essential documents of one of the most bizarre, genuinely inspired free time outfits working the avant-mind body love/noise worship axis today. This newest LP has been patiently waiting to be released for the last few years, initially a multi-label project instigated by Menlo Park and now fully realized by Ecstatic Peace. Long a champion of Menstruation Sisters after witnessing an out-of-nowhere set at NYC's legendary lost underground experimental oasis The Cooler in the late 90s, Thurston Moore invited the Sisters to open for Sonic Youth in Sydney shortly thereafter and, as inspired and weird as the NYC set was, the Sonic Youth gig was perhaps one of the most astounding question marks of music the seasoned Moore had ever experienced. So we present you Samantha, My Wack Panther - a new and beautiful peek into the edge of musical menstruation.

E#85g - edition of 200

Mutant Ape is the insane noise project by Yorkshire, UK resident George Proctor. George runs the Turgid Animal label, which since 2005 has been the go-to place for harsh noise, power electronics and other demented spuzz releasing over 500 CDs, CDRS, cassettes, LPs, 10"s, 7"s etc. He has been releasing Mutant Ape sounds wherever and whenever establishing his classic yet contemporary noise/horror vision of lust and spectacle as one of the premier scum artists of the last decade. Erotic Yorkshire is Mutant Ape at its most corrosive delivering from track to track occult ambience to skin shredding power drug electronics. All bookended by the demented and misogynist rants of Jamie Gillis. Artwork by the fractured mind of Tisbor. Disgust, depression, defilement and demotion are all here for those of you who demand only the best in carnal crud.

John Agnello:

Lotsa Catching Up To Do
March 24th, 2009http://www.johnagnello.com/phpThumb/...t-6.jpeg&w=300Where does the day go?
Hello everyone, it's been a month or so since I've updated the site. Things have been rather topsy turvy in the land of Agnello. Work has been super busy and we're doing major renovations to our house. Bella is getting huge and Sharon is working her butt off.

Where to start.........

Well, middle February found me finishing the Dinosaur Jr. record. What a great record! Lotsa classic J shredding and he's a the top of his writing and singing game. I have many favs on this record and can't wait for it to come out. I have also seen the cover and it's a really cool picture.

Pitchfork did a little video of us in the studio. It came out pretty cool and J and the band whipped out a version of Tarpit for the them.
Here's the site and just search Dinosaur Jr.
http://pitchfork.com/tv/

The record is coming out on Jagaguwar Records and Darius and Chris are great guys.

In the end of February, me and J spent the day at Sterling Sound having the record mastered by the master of all mastering engineers, Greg Calbi. He pretty much nailed it and we walked away 99% done.

The next 10 days found me taking an Atlanta to Greensboro to Jersey City weekend roadtrip to pick up a Baldwin Fun Machine (thanks Janet!) and a bunch of stuff that Sharon's aunt left us.

And the weekend after that I bonded with baby Bella while Sharon partied with her sister/lovers in Miami! We all had a wonderful weekend and Bella was a freakin' angel for me.

So the beginning of March brings a new project and a one off. The one off was a single re mix for my new favorite band, Grizzly Bear. Wow! I worked on the song, "Two Weeks" from their upcoming record and it is wonderful. Ed's got a great voice and he sings really wonderful. And the entire band sings back up that give me Beach Boy chills. It was a great day and Chris from the band hung out and we have a pizza party!

The day after that session. I began doing pre production on my current record. The artist is Jemina Pearl. She was previously the singer in the band, "Be Your Own Pet". She is delightful and her voice is so powerful, it could knock you over. Together with John Easterly, her drummer/collaborator they have put together a records worth of material that will knock your socks off.

We spent about ten days tweaking the arrangements and we are walking into the studio on Wednesday to start the record. And it will be a blast. From the demo's we did, I can tell you this will be a record that will rock, rage and pop from top to bottom.

They are wonderful to work with already and give me much hope for the next generation of music.

More news on this record as we go.

The Wonderful Jemina Pearl
March 25th, 2009http://www.johnagnello.com/phpThumb/...mina.jpg&w=300Kicking Ass At Water Music!
As I speak, we are in the process of making Jemina's first solo record for Ecstatic Peace. We've been having a great time and the tracks are sounding great. John Eatherly has been playing the shit out of everything. He's sublime. Jemina is just starting her vocals and she is killing it.

We started doing preproduction right before SXSW and then started tracking right after. We're pretty much at the mid point and we'll be wrapping up the record in early May. I'm very excited for people to hear this record.

I haven't worked with an artist with her set of pipes since I worked with Cyndi Lauper. No shit!
