there's loads and loads of stuff i enjoy but wouldn't spend money on, the scorpions' 'rock you like a hurricane', various G'n'R songs (although i do have appetite for destruction), some iron maiden, grateful dead, hell even bee gees songs and some disco,

i also really like abba and the beach boys, although i don't see why either should be seen as 'guilty pleasures' (and aren't really).

i'm not ashamed of anything i like now, once i would have been. I quite like the fact that in a day i will listen to crass and leonard cohen, burzum and abba- it makes things more exciting.

MellySingsDoom 07.25.2008 04:55 AM

^^^I like your music mix in yr last sentence, veganguy.

acousticrock87 07.25.2008 04:56 AM

Oh I like the Bee Gees, too. But that's partly for nostalgia reasons. Me and my roommate used to blast them driving around for food after midnight.

EDIT: No I just listened to some of their stuff again. It's totally cause I just plain love them.

vegans4veal 07.25.2008 05:03 AM

actually, i've only heard one grateful dead song, but i think it's one of my favourite songs EVAR...

Cantankerous 07.25.2008 05:04 AM

the dead were awesome

acousticrock87 07.25.2008 05:05 AM

I've really never listened to them. I know a few of their more popular songs, but their discography is too intimidating.

vegans4veal 07.25.2008 05:06 AM

all the live versions of box of rain i've heard a fucking shit, why do people make such a big deal about them live?

Cantankerous 07.25.2008 05:06 AM

because of dark star.

acousticrock87 07.25.2008 05:08 AM

And acid...

Cantankerous 07.25.2008 05:09 AM

and every other drug available

believe me, there are deadheads in my family.

acousticrock87 07.25.2008 05:10 AM

Oh I know. There are deadheads in my family, too.

One of my earliest memories is my cousin (son of a deadhead) locking me in his room playing Friend of the Devil.

Cantankerous 07.25.2008 05:14 AM

once, we hadn't seen my uncle for a year or so.

and then the dead came to town.

and there he was on the news at the dead show.

Mostly Harmless 07.25.2008 05:38 AM

What's a good Grateful Dead album for a first-time listener, Cantankerous?

Cantankerous 07.25.2008 05:40 AM

american beauty

MellySingsDoom 07.25.2008 05:42 AM

Mostly Harmless - as choices 2 and 3, go for "Live/Dead" and "Anthem Of The Sun" - "Live/Dead" has a live version of "Dark Star" on it.

Cantankerous 07.25.2008 05:43 AM

the version of dark star on live/dead isn't that good
i've got a really good version and i don't know where it came from unfortunately

MellySingsDoom 07.25.2008 05:48 AM

I could use some decent Dead boots - you got any hints on particularly good ones?

Cantankerous 07.25.2008 05:49 AM

i'll have to go through them later today, i have a bunch on vinyl

i actually probably have more grateful dead records than i have of any other band.

Mostly Harmless 07.25.2008 05:49 AM

Thank you both for being so helpful.
It's hard to know where to start with with a huge, old legendary band with a huge, legendary discography.

Cantankerous 07.25.2008 05:53 AM

studio albums i reccommend:

workingman's dead
american beauty (start with this)
anthem of the sun
aoxomoxoa

MellySingsDoom 07.25.2008 06:00 AM

Mostly Harmless - no probs, happy to help. Go with Cantanky's list - it's all gold there.

MellySingsDoom 07.25.2008 06:13 AM

Thankx for the link, matey. Will look at this properly either late tonight or tomorrow.

noisereductions 07.25.2008 07:21 AM

I'm starting to really agree that this thread is idiotic. The Dead? Steely Dan? Guns n Roses? Why would any of this be secretive?

Death & the Maiden 07.25.2008 07:27 AM

When I discovered Iron Maiden, I was a bit embarrassed that I liked them. At the time, I would dismiss metal as crap noise music for people who don't have good taste. I was almost ashamed that I had fallen to the level of those metal fans.

ricechex 07.25.2008 07:31 AM

I would say 80's music in general bc they have these 80's nights on the radio and clubs everywhere and it's kinda seen as cheezy and stuff. but i think the 80's had more originality on the radio than now..

yes greatful dead! i am obsessed with the dead, and people are always shocked by it. i mean, ill wear my napalm death shirt one day, and then a greatful dead shirt the next, and people will be like, what the fuck. but i love the greatful dead, especially thier live stuff. i truly believe they are one of the greatest american bands of all time.

batreleaser 07.25.2008 08:20 AM

guns n roses are an absoluteley essential rock n roll band. people who claim to hate them are clearly pretentious bufoons. bands like gnr, motorhead, early metallica, exile on main street era stones, shit like this, rock so hard that i dont care what type of music youre into, youre just a deauche if you cant enjoy this shit. im looped on valium ruight now the doctor have me for my surgery, sorry.

Derek 07.25.2008 08:46 AM

I don't like Guns N Roses, so what.

Rob Instigator 07.25.2008 09:29 AM

steely dan is a jazz rock band, not funk.

They do what they do very well, and they have immaculate songwriting skillz.

Now, whether you like their output or not is another matter

I am not a fan but I can enjoy a tune of theirs every once in a while.

Everyneurotic 07.25.2008 09:48 AM

i like all music publicly.

atsonicpark 07.25.2008 12:32 PM

yep.

and for the record guns n roses were unbelievably amazing.

Rob Instigator 07.25.2008 01:07 PM

not their first album and not GNR Lies. those were great!

everything after that was bloated and dead in the water

mangajunky 07.25.2008 01:08 PM

I love well-crafted pop music like Neil Diamond, The Monkees, Herb Alpert, and Meat Loaf.

atsonicpark 07.25.2008 01:15 PM

good music is good music, no reason to keep it a secret.

Rob Instigator 07.25.2008 01:16 PM

there is a GOOD reason to keep some music a secret! once certain bands get known they start to suck it big time!
