whorefrost's favourite moments:

-New Year countdown seguing into Brother James
-Thurston's extended noise soloing in Antenna (especially impressive in Manchester)
-The ambient, lulling, short little noise piece pre Poison Arrow, performed both nights
-Finally seeing Stereo Sanctity and Death Valley '69 live
-My pal mentioning he hoped they play Hey Joni beforehand and then they end up playing it
-Second encore in London; going up to various girls and announcing that I suspected they were about to rock Death Valley '69... they then launch into... Kool Thing
- Grabbing a couple brews and chilling with Toxic Johnny

huh..

"Notoriously difficult, and often one of the most introverted bands ever likely to be witnessed, Sonic Youth as a live experience tends to stretch from the sublime to the ridiculous and occasionally downright confusing, depending on what kind of (self)indulgent mood they're in at the time."

"Although both Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon remain effortlessly cool focal points, it's also worth mentioning Steve Shelley's tireless drum interludes, Lee Ranaldo's occasional forays into lead vocal territory and current honorary fifth member Mark Ibold's guitar contributions. "

...ok...

donnie 01.04.2011 08:55 AM

Thanks, Moshe. Your trolling for reviews is a great thing.
But I'm guessing this crowd does not find SY to be difficult, introverted(!), or confusing, except for confusing in a good way. Props though for recognizing the rhythm section.

nancykitten 01.04.2011 01:54 PM

There was nothing introverted, difficult or confusing about those shows. What a stupid review.

Some people just cannot get over their distaste of Sonic Youth, even when they witness a screaming crowd lapping-up every moment. Who the Hell was confused in that crowd?

I love how he claims people were screaming for Sugar Kane and Dirty Boots, because in all the times I've seen Sonic Youth, I have never heard anyone shout for those songs.

Thanks for the link to the recording, Moshe. Lots of interesting stuff in that blog. It's appreciated.

Dying to listen to this, but i guess it won't hurt me to wait for the .flac files. Hopefully rappard will be able to share them soon. I know i'd be up for editing the raw files if i had any idea how to do that correctly...

The taper dropped the parcel in the mail yesterday. Hopefully fellow boardie Andrei is up for editing these....either way, I'll upload the untracked FLAC files on Utkonos soon(ish).

stu666 01.05.2011 05:30 AM

Georgekrz, you are indefatigable. I regret I didn't get to meet you when you were in my town. Next time for sure, right?

and now you know why i call you what i do
awesome !

rappard 01.06.2011 05:26 PM

Listening to the SY recording right now - pretty good for a Zoom H2 recording: somewhat heavy on the bass (my Edirol has the same flaw, there's a reason people use mics and battery boxes), but very little audience noise. Occasional minor phase shifting. All in all, probably very enjoyable after some tweaking.

Sleepytime!

Pelle 01.06.2011 05:36 PM

I like the recording alot.

Sounds very bootleg-ish:)
Thanks alot for the upload!

Blimey that was quick! I only posted it on Tuesday. (The traffic source info on my blog showed I was getting a lot of referrals from here so I thought I'd better register.)

donnie - hope so, SLC was really awesome.

pad_023 01.09.2011 02:18 PM

I only just realised Kim had a dig at the Topshop and H&M after listening to the Kool Thing bootleg.

Does anyone think they played Kool Thing because of the Steve Albini dig.

Afraid i don't remember a lot apart from the show itself.
I was the blonde guy with a red and black christmas jumper on. Possibly quite annoying going by listening back to this bootleg... :/

Sorry

Sorry

No worries. The gig is the thing. A bit of audience noise is only to be expected.

Pelle 01.16.2011 12:58 PM
