i got shivers during Inhuman, lee playing the ukelele through his microphone and thurston lumbering around the stage like he was the swamp thing or something, screaming "inhuman!" over and over.
and after show beers were fun! |
Work and family chaos doesn't allow me the time to check out posts here of who knows what they be playing etc. I go to Sonic shows anytime they play within 100 miles of mid LI, it's basically the treat i am allowed to do by myself. So i went into last night with no clue of what the set would possibly be. I thought it would be the same core set they have been playin the past year or so with a few additions/deletions.
I got right up front after Wild Flags set in front of Thurston and then got totally blown away. I couldn't believe the set change !!!!! I just kept saying to myself i haven't hear this live since .... or have i ever heard this live before !!! Hell, I usually know the song in the first few notes (name that tune) Ghost Bitch I couldn't even place it had been so since i listened to Bad Moon Rising all the way through. All I can say is another amazing show by the greatest live band i've ever seen. Keep playing and I'll keep showing up. |

I am still in glowingly shock from last night. Everything was perfect. The sun sinking over Manhattan to the west, The moon coming up over the Stage from the east, the skyline lit up techni-color and the sound.
Yes the sound. The sound was key. The sonic sounds. I will always love them. This was a show i did from the distance, out by the water, but was ALWAYS LISTENING, ALWAYS IN TUNE. Hearing waves of the East River crash on the Brooklyn shore with SY going was perfectly mixed. I didn't mind the perimeter space and view. Room to dance too. I also was stumped on a few songs at first. (so glad I had recently bought new vinyl copy of BMR) My highlights were: DV '69 Eric's Trip - Lee was really pouring it on! Starfield Road>Drunken Butterfly Sugar Kane - I hadn't seen this once since Hammerstein Ballroom 2/27/99 Psychic Hearts -This floored me beyond belief. You see, a band I was in back in '95-'98, called TENT, used to cover it. Memories of me playing it mixed with my idols rocking it before my ears and eyes was so much joy. Yes, thank Sonic Youth for another perfect night and for always surprising us all. Please play out more! |
Psychic Hearts is too good of a track to languish in obscurity

I'm here at work and all I can think about is FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY (monster truck announcer voice). The reality exceeded the fantasy by a good measure.

When is the last time they played Brave Men Run? 1986??? oh man... |

'85, in fact! ''86 for Ghost Bitch, '99 for Starfield Road, '95 for I Love Her All the Time, '93 for Flower...yeesh. |
you folks that want to commit suicide for not showing up/ How about showing up and leaving early? We left during SugarCane because we had to get down to Philly and my niece was going to another party in NYC. Mostly though because I thought the crowd was so dead they'd never get them back out for another encore. Silly me. Still though an excellent show what I did stay for. Wild Flag was terrific also couldn't believe they didn't play an encore.
|
Lotsa people bailed after Psychic Hearts....I KNEW they were coming back for one more song-But I was guessing Expressway or Brother James....

I still wonder if Thurston knew there was liquid in that cup/bottle when he decided to "play" it... |
Enjoy the review and pics above and ignore the comments. Sonic Youth should do a setlist like that
in DC or Portland and get the unconditional love it deserves. The big debate there is: was this better than the Prospect Park gig? I was at both, and as mouth-droppingly great as the PP gig was, the show Friday resonated more with me. Better setlist, better crowd where I was at (I like being at or near the front, where people are less likely to be texting/talking/imitating "The Thinker"), sound in the venue about the same, the venue itself much more aesthetically appealing...just my thoughts. I'll have a full review up mid-week. |
^ I was at the Prospect park show and it was awesome...but judging by the setlist alone...it looks like the greatest shows they can put on currently.
and my speakers don't work so I can't watch youtube vids. |
Wow, I haven't even thought about last summers Prospect Park show which I was at also. I have to give a slight edge to Prospect Park because that setlist spoke to me more personally (even though Psychic Hearts really brought back a flood of personal memeories for me) and 4pc class SY was beyond tighness. NO DISRESPECT to Mark at all either. But then the Manhattan skyline at sunset and complete darkness was sight to behold in itself. I still wish for a recording of 7.31.10 to surface, as with 8.12.11
I can NOT get enough of live SY!! |
Both shows make my top 5. Prospect Park had the quartet, as you mention, and a setlist where every song but one was from the '80s. I'd heard all of those songs live before though (not a complaint!) whereas the WW show was the first SY show in a long-ass time where they threw me for a huge loop.
|
Yeah, the Williamsburg show thru me for a big loop too, but that was very alright. I did enjoy every note. All today I was thinking I wanted to go back to to Friday night from 7-10 pm there and not leave that time zone.
I can not wait until my next SY show, hope it will be sooner than later! |
