Hello World Music thread!I have something good for you.

Sanjo for Komungo ![]() Sanjo is the epitome of a "theme and variations" form. A melody is subjected to an amazing number of variations over the course of several movements. These movements are defined by their changdan (rhythmic phrase). Up to twelve changdan may be used, but four to six are more common. A single performance may last anywhere from 8 minutes to one hour. Sanjo began as a folk music form, but moved into the realm of royal patronage in the mid-19th century. The instruments include: taegum, a large transverse flute with a metal membrane near the mouthpiece. A skillful player can make it sound almost like a brass instrument. changgo is the standard percussion instrument. It has two heads, and is played with a thin stick in one hand and a heavy beater in the other. The performers on the Taegum Sanjo are Lee Seng-kang on taegum, accompanied by Lee Song-jin on changgo. The komingo player on the Komungo Sanjo is Shin Kwe-dong. The recordings were made in 1984 |

Ok, I've promised a few months ago I would upload something by Intik, and I guess it's still time to keep my promise... Here are three tracks (not a lot, I know, but still something): Intik - Il était une fois l'Algérie http://www.yousendit.com/download/25mCt96cwLh5TA%3D%3D Intik - L'exilé http://www.yousendit.com/download/25lyWo4v4oB5TA%3D%3D Intik - Liberté http://www.yousendit.com/download/25lyWqlJUTl5TA%3D%3D As I wrote, all the members of Intik grew up in Algeria but I believe they relocated to France a few years ago. I did not remember this, but they actually also have a lot of reggae-influenced songs (which I don't really like). The first song ("Once upon a time in Algeria"), if you need to know, tells the story of all the unexplained political assssinations since the independence of the country. |

http://www.seasite.niu.edu/indonesia.../main_page.htm Puts loads of bands to shame. Functions of Gamelan
Gamelan is a way of linking individuals in social groups. Gamelan music is performed as a group effort, and so there is no place for an individual showoff. Traditionally, gamelan is only played at certain occasions such as ritual ceremonies, special community celebrations, shadow puppet shows, and for the royal family. Gamelan is also used to accompany dances in court, temple, and village rituals. Besides providing music for social functional ceremonies, gamelan also provides a livelihood for many professional musicians, and for specialized craftsmen who manufacture gamelan. Today, although gamelan music is still used for ritual ceremonies and the royal family, it is also performed as concert music at social and cultural gatherings to welcome guests and audiences. Gamelan is also used to accompany many kinds of both traditional and modern dances, drama, theatrical and puppetry. In modern days, gamelan can be kept in places such as courts, temples, museums, schools, or even private homes. |

Bumping for good measure.Need more contributions to this.
|
Yes, yes we do.
I've still got stuff to upload for Pauly. I've promised some Cuban stuff, obviously. Shit. |
I have some good blogs bookmarked that i'll post as soon as the relationship between alcohol and the brain will have come to a peaceful end.
|
I can relate. Not now of course, but last night.
Why oh why did one of my friends order me a drink of this stuff: ![]() Along with something just as rancid, but I'm not certain what it was. AWFUL. I can still taste it. |
|
Ah, Glice. I love you.
|
Sir Excellence strikes again.Thank you.I'm converting some tapes of Sardinian folk music that my mum gave me and i'll post them when finished.
|
I fucking love you Glice! This is beautiful stuff.Pauly sent me some good irish music that i wish he would post on here or i'll do it at one point.Whos's this fantastic singer?
|
According to the sleeve, it's a lady called Mary-Ann Roberts, but I'm going to assume that it's actually Robert Evans who's singing on the first track. Unfortunately, they've put a lot more information in Welsh on the CD than they have in English, so it's not entirely clear.

Music from Greenland
If I could ask with the above one, please don't distrubute this to the whole world and their dog. I shouldn't really be upping it, I very much doubt that very many would care but if I upped the whole record and someone bootlegged it then I could get in a lot of trouble with some thoroughly nice people. I have no more information on the recording itself than that it's Greenlandish (?). |

Just watch and listen this incredible Mongolian musician and cry in disbelief.

This further confirms my belief that the art of a good musician lies in the right hand rather than the left. He's incredible. I'm going to start playing another instrument this year, and the choices are an Er-hu or Uillean pipes. This video is pushing the case for an Er-hu a great deal. The case against Er-Hu |

Shamisen duo Although I must say that there's something I'm not too fond of about pentatonic scales.
Solo Tabla, anyone? Munir and (son) Omar Bashir I read about the above in a Haino interview where he said he was one of the few people who he'd like to work with. Haino, as usual, is entirely right. He's fucking awesome. |
Its been much too long since I have added anything (mostly due to laziness, and my computers social problmes) and I do have a great deal to share sometime soon. This should tide you all over until then.
My friend Emmanuel, of Nigeria sent me a song today to my delight, and I've got a feeling the lot of you world music listeners will enjoy it too. Of course I could be wrong. Let me know, comrades. From the e-mail: check out this short but great display of expertise in the use of traditional instruments like maracas, flute.guitar etc. by our own Sir Victor Uwaifo. He is at present a Prof. at the University of Benin, Nigeria. try saving the file before playing...cheers i will give you a brief of what the music is talking about soon. Of course he never did tell me what the song was about... That isn't a problem in this thread, however. http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=81CBC28A4E5A59F1 In the e-mail he asked if in return I could send tracks from Kenny Rogers and Jim Reeves, as it is very hard to find material from those artists in Nigeria. Odd, very odd. |
|
Great. This is making my night a little worth while.
Also, in case anyone wanted some follow up to the Nigerian song I posted a few days ago, it seems as though its a about a young boy, who is not doing his school work, and so his teacher flogs him. The boys father (who is a boxer) is enraged by this, and goes after the teacher. Great, right? I'm drinking by myself, a total drunk? Yes or no? |
NO. No way. I was drinking by myself earlier but the night... has changed...somewhat. [thanks, fortuity]
You're not a drunk until you have nothing but drink, and even then you're not a drunk until you only get drunk because it's what you do rather than what you choose to do. |
That is completely reassuring.
Ah, now I can have another drink without feeling guilty. And this is a good thing, as they are extra special tonight. I could attempt to upload the promised Cuban material as well. |
i'm trying to upload a track from Sounds Of The Indian Snake Charmers but badongo is being crap
|
So use You Send It.
A suggestion. |
Excellent work Mr & Bowels. The great Lord Procrastinatron would be proud.
