i wouldnt want them any other way |
The first record by The Thermals, More Parts Per Million is pretty lo-fi. I love that album, it's fun as hell. Oh and a lot of Sebadoh stuff, if they haven't been mentioned. I didn't read every post.

Acoustic guitars on the studio version of Street Fighting Man are from a cassette deck recording.
|
The new Times New Viking album is way lower fi than any GBV or Sebadoh. It really sounds like boombox crap. (I think the songs are pretty good, but jeez)
|
My favorite song I've done is not of the greatest quality. I didn't know I had done until I found it on my fourtrack a while back. I don't know what tuning I'm in so I can't play it again and the vocals are pretty muddy, but I love it. It's kind of noisy blues.

Actually, I'm amazed at how good most of their stuff sounds. BOX OF CHAMELEONS in particular had a lot of care put into its production, it seems like. To have 128 different songs that all sound so different and from completely different sources.. it sounds pretty unified for most of it. Pretty crazy. The lowest-fi stuff by SCG is definitely the early tape stuff... hatchet rain, fresh kill, stuff like that... I don't remember what early tape or vinyl release it's from but they have this super awesome lofi song that goes "WHO'S YOUR FAVORITE PRESIDENT? PRESIDENT? PRESIDENT? MINE'S CALVIN COOLIDGE!!!!!!!!!!" |

Don't let it take your attention away from their songwriting skills, though. Take, for instance, 'Drop Out' and listen closely to the melody. They might make a racket, but they sure can write songs that stick to your brain like chewing gum to your hair. |

i love lo fi black metal, it cant be done any other way without sounding silly.
early mayhem early darkthrone first 5 burzum albums second beherit album early hellhammer venom's black metal immortal's first two albums rat bastard's bands are all ridiculous lo fi, and ridiculously brilliant. check out his band the laundry room squelchers, who besides to live and shave in la are the best of the concrete/noise/cock/cutup variety. |
Early Mayhem (Deathcrush, Live in Leipzig)
Early Darkthrone (Under a Funeral Moon, Transilvanian Hunger) Burzum (Anthology) Fimbulwinter (Servants of Sorcery) I'm in the mood to make some lo-fi black metal right now. Edit: Basically the same as batreleaser's post. |
So, to recap... Mayhem. GBV. Sebadoh. Daniel Johnston.
|
This is a great thread. Anyone else discovered anymore cool no-fi bands?
