I used to be one of the morons who used musical tastes as a basis for judging others, now I honestly don't care.

If on the offhand chance someone asks me what kind of music I'm into, I usually just tell them I like whatever I think sounds good, then tell them what kinds of music I don't like-opera, contemporary pop-country, polka, bar band blues-rock, and harsh noise.

I like a lot of "mainstream" artists like Nirvana, Pink Floyd, and Tool, so maybe I don't have the same issues dealing with "people not educated in music" as some of you others here.

Now, what I do have a problem with is when people ask me what kind of music my band plays...I've settled on telling people to just listen and judge for themselves, which is a much healthier attitude towards the subject than our singer has, as highlighted by the following exchange between him and a guy from a typical bar band a few months back:

Bar Band Guy: So what music do you guys play?
Singer: Well, I don't really know what to call it.
Bar Band Guy: Is it like rock?
Singer: I guess, sort of...not really...I can't really tell you.
Bar Band Guy: Then describe it for me!
Singer: I DON'T KNOW!! Just go ask our drummer and leave me alone!

I think maybe the next time someone asks me that question I'll tell them to look at my MySpace page.

I get that to, but no doubt for different reasons. Perhaps everyone does; music: the universal alienator.

I was talking more about the alphabetical list of bands I put in the Music section, but yeah I see your point.

i started just saying "deerhoof" and not explaining any further.

ALIEN ANAL 10.26.2007 02:34 AM

i often ask the question because im really bad at small talk.
it usualy goes like this

*after a bit of introduction chat*
"so what tuuuuunes you into?"

"umm..i dunno..everything"

"err thats stupid, everyone says everything..surely there are 4 or 5 bands you dig.."

im not very good with girls
haha

Rob Instigator 10.26.2007 09:24 AM

hilarious!

i like people who can talk intelligently about the bands and music they like. music is a huge part of my life and I just cannot fathom a person who does not enjoy music, or who just listens to "whatever's playing"

Cardinal Rob 10.26.2007 01:09 PM

"Quality is independent of genre"
"..."
"Quality, is independent, of genre"
"What does that mean?"
"I can enjoy any possible kind of music, as long as it sounds good to me. I never wish to restrain myself into different kinds of music, so I can get the most out of listening"

Further replies vary.

Surely someone who just listens to whatever's playing enjoys music enjoys music more than someone who doesn't listen to whatever's playing? And, besides which, isn't this thread largely ridiculous given how few of you listen to the enormously varied category of dance music (by which I mean music for dance clubs, 1980-present)?

Cantankerous 10.27.2007 10:57 AM

"80s indie rock"
"shoegaze"
"psychedelic rock"
"1st wave punk"
"1st wave rap"
"space rock"
"glam rock"
"bob dylan"

there you have it.
