the point being that , unlike in punk music, metal and people in metal bands want to be seen s larger than life, "metal gods" in a sense, which is theatrical.

honest to goodness punk bands and many indie bands, especially the old guard, made it a point to NOT be theatircal, to let everyone know that the dudes on stage were JUST LIKE YOU, the dudes in the audience, and that anyone could get up and rock. metal is different in that snese, and that is what I call theatrical.

good musi c is good music though.

AC/DC and VAN HALEN (w/ diamond dave) always got and get lumped in as heavy metal, when they are not.
what they are is heavy hard rock.

eyehategod theatrical? because they all did heroine or how?

i said "not all", but certainly a good chunk. but most death metal and thrash bands, stoner and doom bands made the point of being exactly like their fans.

i'm certainly not sure how motörhead, mastodon or converge are theatrical.

granted many of these present parallelisms (in motörhead's case) and influence from hardcore punk to strip the shit down, but still; i can't really see someone say a band like megadeth or obituary or kyuss are/were theatrical.

besides, most punks dressed up to call attention upon themselves, even though the line between audience and artists was nulled, lookswise. the only difference between metal bands and punk bands is the "larger than life" persona you talked about.

i agree wholeheartedly with the "good music is good music" part.

Rob Instigator 01.07.2008 01:48 PM

Have you seen EyeHateGod live? Have you looked at their ephemera? Their record covers, their shirts, their image? it is highly theatrical, not as extreme as King Diamond or Iron maiden, but just as "theatrical" as Rob Zombie.

Rob Instigator 01.07.2008 01:48 PM

motorhead is NOT a metal band.
motorhead is like AC/DC, a hard rocking blues based band.
lemmy hates being called metal and I go with what lemmy says.

Rob Instigator 01.07.2008 01:49 PM

megadeth had a GIANT fucking Vic Rattlehead (or whatever their :mascot" is) on stage with them just like Iron maiden and crazy eddie! How is that NOT theatrical?

Everyneurotic 01.07.2008 02:04 PM

"as theatrical as rob zombie?" if you judge them by their record covers then, by that definition, black flag, youth of today and sonic youth are also theatrical and therefore metal. i've seen pictures and some videos of them live and they just play their songs.

motörhead are a crossover act, some people consider them metal, other punk, others (lemmy included) consider them rock; the truth is, their music has elements of all these. you can't deny that their music isn't heavy.

and i think it's a stretch saying that just by having a backdrop with a logo is being theatrical. still i get the point for megadeth, replace megadeth in that post with "exodus".

Rob Instigator 01.07.2008 02:08 PM

megadeth had an ACTUAL ANIMATRONIC PUPPET man, like crazy eddie

all metal is by defintion theatrical. they are rock GODS. they are larger than life. they are untouchable music monsters )

Norma J 01.07.2008 06:15 PM

Alot of bands get cast as 'metal' when perhaps they shouldn't. I put forward that if you consider bands like AC/DC 'metal', you're not necessarly 'wrong' of course, but you're thinking about the music rather than feeling it.

you've just characterized half of the posters on this message board.

trhat's a load of shit.

thinking about music and feeling the music are equally important.

in fact, thinking about it is sometimes MORE important.

demonrail666 01.08.2008 10:20 AM

A don't know about anything else, but Dio's Holy Diver had me nodding like an idiot in bed last night.

there's a difference between music that makes you think and overanalyzing what genre music belongs in. the former category is the important one. Peace Sells by Megadeath is a song that makes you think (or at least that made metalheads think.) Thinking about whether or not Megadeath is metal, hard rock, etc., is less important.

Rob Instigator 01.08.2008 11:59 AM

I fully agree, but for a music lover, thetre is nearly nothing about music tht I do nto enjoy thinking about, and genres, being just the way we humans classify music, like we classify all things (which is a GOOD thing, generally)

Toilet & Bowels 01.08.2008 02:02 PM

i expected to see more variation in answers but it's all acdc, motorhead, iron maiden, sabbath & judas priest. and i don't know how someone could say slayer and metallica aren't metal because they're thrash. wasn't the word thrash just a prefix to the word metal?

Norma J 01.08.2008 05:39 PM

Rob, you didn't get what I was saying, at all.

Rob Instigator 01.08.2008 05:44 PM

norma j, I was actually responding to the reply thewall91 left.

I completely understand what yr saying. I get a nauseous feeling whenever I hear the slo-jams, and that is before doing any thinking at all.... ha ha

no really, you are right. most of the time, when you hear an AC DC song, then a Maiden song, then a Priest song, then a guns and roses song, then slayer, all those songs, while wildly different, make you feel a certain way, which as n old headbanger, I used to deem METAL

If Slayer and Metallica are heavy metal, then so are The Cure and Killing Joke!
