Gosh,if you guys played in a band with me and we had gotten a bad review i'd despair at the thought of what you'd react like.

gmku 12.07.2006 02:06 PM

Don't mess with me, mannn!!!

gmku 12.07.2006 02:07 PM

I actually think Glice and Robert Christgau share a lot in common.

Glice 12.07.2006 02:09 PM

Ok. So. Perhaps I was a little rash in my opinions. I DO hate Bowie, and that's not likely to change any time soon. He's one of the many people I've beat my head against a brick wall with several thousand times. I'm incredibly sensitive to voices, which isn't something that anyone else can do anything about, and neither should they. My opinion isn't terribly important.

And gmku, like I say, don't be disheartened. I'm a complete aesthetic fascist, I'm still very much stuck in the 12-yr-old mould of being passionate beyond ration - as it happens, I think very little of musical appreciation fits into the mould of being 'rational' until one gets to the plane of sophistry, ie, music theory.

I should've said from the offset that the artwork was my favourite of any mixtape I've recieve for many a year.

Necessarily so. If you're genuinely interested in a taxonomy of my dislike for the Clash, then I'm happy to write one. If you're interested in a detailed biopsy of any of my opinions, again, I'm more than happy to give one. Ultimately, no one's going to be convinced by any argument I provide, because people over the age of 14 have usually made their mind up about most things.

J&MC are talked about all the time on this forum. Everyone here likes them. Everyone. I don't think even captain contrary Hayden can be bothered to dislike them. And this mixtape swap is alligned to the context of this forum, no? So far as I can make out, they are as well-liked on this forum as SY. So that's the providence of that sleight.

I'm not so sure it's an obscure Bowie choice, but I have a lot of friends who love China Girl. But that's neither here nor there.

I dislike the inference that I should keep an 'open mind'. Obviously, I've gone overboard, so that's entirely understandable and I probably deserve it.

Look, the bottom line is, I'm glad that gmku has gone to the bother of joining in, making an excellent cover for, thinking about and constructing , and sending a tape that he, himself, would like to recieve. I didn't like it, but what the fuck difference does that make to anyone's lives? My Dad listened to it this afternoon, and seems to be enjoying it, so all is well. I happen to have an aversion for white boys with guitars, and am an irrational little cunt. The latter obviously means I fit right in on this forum, the former apparently less so.

gmku 12.07.2006 02:11 PM

Dear Glice,

All is forgiven. Come home.

I now understand that you're just, well, a little "special." And I can respect that.

I'll keep a light on.

Love,

gmku

Excellent. If it's any solace, I've had friends of mine lurking on here, and they've said that, uniquely, I come across as less of a cunt online than in the real world.

Ha!

Your friends are welcome anytime, too.

Seriously, don't you think my slow edit of China Girl was at least slightly creative?

"shheee saays... Baby,,,, just you shuttt yourr mousssee..."

gmku 12.07.2006 02:23 PM

Yeah, I wish my dad liked more of this stuff, too. All he'll listen to is Benny Goodman and Henry Mancini. You must have a cool dad, Glice.

Glice 12.07.2006 02:28 PM

See, ironically, I would've appreciated Goodman or Mancini. I wouldn't say my Dad has a great taste in music, but then it is the perpetual law of all music fans that they must disagree with their father (Most of the time. We do share an affection for Meatloaf).

I got mix tapes four, but not three. I got your tape for mix four, Bytor!

gmku 12.11.2006 01:02 PM

Received round 3 tape today. Thanks to whomever. Review pending.

For the moment, I can say I love the cover/packaging! Somebody went to a lot of creative effort. Mine comes with a faux fur pouch (tiger? leopard?), including buttons to keep everything nicely buttoned up and secure. In the tape case, a very elegant choice in wrapping paper hides the cassette-issued cardboard insert and the neatly handwritten song list.

I recognize only one band. So apparently nothing obvious or lazy went into the production of this little gem, and I eagerly await the opportunity to slip this into my home deck.

Thanks!

sonicl 12.11.2006 04:20 PM

I received a tape last week, but haven't had the chance to post to say so until now. It has a yellow cover with black streaks. There's a tracklist in there, but I don't want to look at it until I've listened to the tape.

Пятхъдесят Шест 12.11.2006 04:23 PM

Crazy man, you've got mine again! This can either be a good thing, or a bad thing....

I can't remember what I put on there.

sonicl 12.11.2006 04:26 PM

It's okay, I saw New Blockaders at the weekend, so my ears are already ringing this time. ;)

Пятхъдесят Шест 12.11.2006 04:33 PM

Yes, I know which one it is now. I complied this one after a night at the bar. Drunk songs, if you will.

I'm listening to it right now, and enjoying it very much. Your drunk songs work very well on a sleepy Tuesday morning.

Review of The Chocolate Fudge Cave mix tape (round 3)

I have no idea what the title means, but I love chocolate fudge and caves are interesting dark places, so let's go.

First off, the packaging. Wowsers. Faux fur pouch for the cassette box. Cassette box is lined in an elegant print paper. Very nice.

Song list side A

Like a Motherfucker - "The Death of the Mother Culture at Mowa Mam Gymru The Wialing Shamanic Fury of the Hoeurs and Druids and the Coming of the Romans"
Uomammut - "Odio"
Narita Munehiro - "Velocity"

Listen, I don't want to die, all right? In fact, I'm almost still convinced that I'm the exception to the rule and will never shuffle off this mortal coil. This side forces me to reconsider my delusions. What we have here is what I might call spectral metal, consisting mostly of the howlings and screams of drenched-in-distorted-feedback guitar, once in a while a human voice struggling up through the murky layers to intone scary things. It's like being in a swamp and getting sucked down and down and down and down, while all kinds of creepy things slither by. The Buddhists suggest one meditate on one's death, how one's body decomposes, and so on. This is a good start. Dark and absymal and one hell of a lot of fun.

Side 2 song list

M.I.A. -"Bucky Done Gun"
Balek - "A Beast Cage"
Larsen - "Rever"
Rafael Toral - "Glove Touch"
Mother Tongue - "Rewording"
Console - "Starpower"
Ashtray Navigations - Cante Jodido Lookalike Contest"

Things are a little sunnier this side. Even slighltly jingly in places, like M.I.A.'s ditty. Balek is sort of fuzz rap--if I remember correctly, as I'm doing this at work with the tape at home. My favorite is "Starpower" by Console--yes, that "Starpower," and Console do it justice in a rather blissed-out, mellow kind of way.

Very nice tape. Very enjoyable. Thanks!

porkmarras 12.12.2006 10:26 AM

Out of curiosity, did you get sonicl's mixtape?

gmku 12.12.2006 10:35 AM

I don't know. Is this sonicl's tape? I don't think the username is identified.

porkmarras 12.12.2006 10:37 AM

It looks like it might be his.The inclusion of Ashtray Navigations is a tad misleading, though,as he sent me one of their cds(which is gobsmackingly great!) because they're not really his cup of tea.

After i looked at the tracklist again,i'd say i'm dead sure it is his mixtape.

sonicl 12.12.2006 10:44 AM

Guilty as charged, m'lud.

The plan had been to make one side doom and the other dance, but I ran into problems when I realised that all my dance-y stuff is in storage.

That's all I have time to say for myself right now though. I have the day off work and I'm off to the barber.

gmku 12.12.2006 10:59 AM

Ya done good. I'm enjoying it.

I seem to remember it being a fun one to sing a long with. I'm happy to see you enjoyed it!

finding nobody 12.13.2006 04:22 PM

I just got my tape. It's PaulyBee's. I just popped it in, on track number two now. Sounds great!

Danny Himself 12.13.2006 05:23 PM

Aw man, nobody got my tape. :[

I still haven't recieved my round three tape, either. I have round four though. I will review it when I get the chance to properly sit down with it.

Glice 12.21.2006 01:19 PM

No-one got mine yet then? Bloody postal workers other than patrons of this board.

Пятхъдесят Шест 12.21.2006 03:54 PM

I've not got a tape for this round...

Danny Himself 12.21.2006 06:25 PM

Me either. I have a mix tape four though.

Glice 01.03.2007 06:26 PM

Hello there, desparation bump.

Пятхъдесят Шест 01.03.2007 08:37 PM

Nope. Nothing.

finding nobody 01.03.2007 08:38 PM

I'll have a review for PaulyBee's here within the next couple of days

sonicl 01.10.2007 04:54 AM

Still no sign of mine from round two though, Nefeli? :(

sonicl 01.10.2007 05:05 AM

I'll have a turntable again in about a month's time, and I'll re-record it and re-send it then.

pokkeherrie 01.10.2007 05:13 AM

there must be some good music playing at the athens post office lately.

Pookie 01.10.2007 07:09 AM

Hurrah....Nefeli has a mix tape!!!

its mostly works of david sylvian (sp? dont have it with me). listened to it yesterday, but in backround. first side, his singing isnt exactly my taste although liked the music parts. second side, is amazing! probably more close to what am used to listen. will give more listenings to first side and read about that musician, am ignorant of him therefore i thank you more.

I couldn't think of a theme, so I decided on a theme of one person; everything on there is a David Sylvian project, and if I recall rightly it covers work from the very early 1980's with Japan right up to 2005 or 2006. So over twenty years of career.

I'm glad you like side two; putting on a 38-minute piece was a concern, to be honest.

Even the indistinct printed cover was a Sylvian work; it's cut from this photograph of his:

What's the deal? Do I want in?
