i dont remember that verse exactly word for word...but that pretty much sums it up.

If anyone is making this "personal" it's you and your ILK.

Anyone (& no, I don't mean just board members) with a fucking brain knows Jimi rules.

Hey, i said Jimi was an amazing guitarist. My only point has been (if i can remember that far back) that his influence (however vast) is not total. That there are areas of rock that have managed to thrive regardless of the obvious brilliance of something like Purple fuckin' Haze. And that those bands that have managed to exist outside of his sphere of influence did not do so out of some kind of inability to compete with him.

No one is keeping you here, is all I'm suggesting. If you can't tear yourself away from the board to the point where it's affecting your real life, you have problems bigger than the one you think you've encountered in this thread.

If you don't want to argue anymore, then just stop. It's the easiest thing in the world.

I've had my fair share of arguments on this board. I just don't make a habit of insulting people left and right for no apparent reason. I didn't come here to argue, so I only do so when there's nothing better to say.

Defending Jimi Hendrix as the greatest guitarist who ever lived is the very definition of a safe opinion. Loads of people think the same thing. It should not require an ongoing argument.

demonrail666 06.06.2007 05:27 PM

Wow. I haven't seen this much blood on a thread since that time someone tried to defend the second Superchunk album for its 'gnarliness'.

Green_mind 06.06.2007 05:34 PM

I think he was the greatest guitarist perhaps in his day, but as said before in this thread, has been surpassed by the inevitable natural growth as music has progressed with the guitarists with it. This natural growth, I believe, would have followed through like destiny even without the presence of Hendrix and others. For this reason I don't see the need for the title, 'best guitarist' as there will be many other naturally gifted guitarists who continue to evolve the artform in their own way.

EDIT: What I was trying to get across was that not only do you have to operate within a very particular field of music if you ever hope to be appreciated by the likes of Guitar World, but you also can't look like this, apparently:

i haven't been reading this thread really, but i'm just jumping in here to mention that this poster was hanging on the wall in the classroom of my school that i was going to when i was about 10 years old.

seeing that picture just now made me think that it seems a bit odd in hindsight... to have a poster like that with "lovesexy" hanging in a classroom with 10-year-olds i mean, but maybe my teacher at the time was a fan. there also was a madonna poster.

atari 2600 06.06.2007 05:35 PM

typical...

That's odd. I approve.

Hello everybody. I've changed my mind again, and have decided that the greatest guitarist of all time is Jim Henson. Thank you for your patience.

I'm afraid you can't do that. We all agreed about three pages back that the best guitarist ever is Lenny Kravitz.

You're right. In fact, I can SCIENTIFICALLY prove that in 1987, Leonard Kravitz invented a time machine, travelled back to 1965, "accidentally" met Hendrix (then playing in a library music band), taught Hendrix everything he knew about fashion and music, then travelled forward to 1994, created the riff to "Are You Gonna Go My Way", made a video where the female drummer had a funky afro and funkier shades (whew!), and then ever so modestly acknowledged his debt to the Jimster. Whatta guy!

Yes, and either these people are too stupid to realize this or they are just too pig-headed. One almost hopes, for their sake, that it's just pig-headedness and internet cack.

Jimi took it all to a new level. It's elementary.

And this is what I get here. A bunch of lame-brain nonsense from a collection of wackadoos.

"Safe" for this board, dear.
Nice job of playing? dumb there.

You guys should get a room.

Look, I'm not interested either in someone who tries (emphasis on
"tries") to imitate Hendrix, although Stevie Ray Vaughan did a damn swell job of it, but that's been awhile ago.

It's also amusing to me how people with opinions made of gossamer always try to spin shit around to make themselves sound less pathetic.

Most guitarists, hey, most musicians in general, with any talent will also invariably agree. It's certainly not any sort of esoteric knowledge.

People on this board are just obssessed with being "hipster" contrarians, that's all.

Look, there's very few musicians that I would stick to my guns like this about.

P.S. SBAC

MellySingsDoom 06.06.2007 06:15 PM

Man, it's awfully quiet in this thread.

Too quiet in fact.

It's time to call in an expert to crack this case:

demonrail666 06.06.2007 06:19 PM

It's so quiet because we're all sitting down, listening to our Lenny Kravitz Unplugged CDs and smoking our pipes. It's what we always do after having one our 'who's the best guitarist ever' discussions.

I knew you would reply in this fashion--totally predictable on your part--but I stand by what I said because most people here agree that Hendrix is great, if not phenomenal, which should be enough for you. "Best guitarist ever" is crap, in the same way that the notion of there being a Best album, Best band, and Best song is crap.

This board
is for the most part made up of normal people who live in unremarkable places and who are surrounded by the most average of people in their daily lives. To say that this board could overwhelmingly offer some sort of exception to the popular opinion that "Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist ever" is laughable. You act like the whole board is arguing with you, narcissist. At most, all we're saying is that there is no "best ever."

MellySingsDoom 06.06.2007 06:25 PM

"Just one more question, DR666. You say that you were smoking a pipe in the drawing room when the argument happened. If that's the case, why is your pouch full of rolling tobacco, and not pipe tobacco?"

sonicl 06.06.2007 06:28 PM

Time for me to go up the wooden hill to bed. Goodnight.
