'ever since the face got revealed the game got mad real'
Nah, I'm with you Sev. This album is a high point of his entire career. BTW, I feel like an idiot but apparently missed the Portishead sample. And I love Portishead. Tell me it's on "Unexpected Call" which is currently my favorite track. |
holy shit - The Brown Tape is gonna drop soon. Fully remixed version of Twelve Reasons! Good year to be a Ghostface fan for real!
|
|
12 Reasons gets better with each listen for me. i love how it's 40 mins (just like Illmatic :o), my ideal rap album length.
here's a great review of the album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJEvrZHcEMY |
oh shit, this album goes so fucking hard. Ghost spitting raw over those fucking giallo film samples. the only thing that drags it down is some of the guest features. but whatever. fantastic album. i think i'm just gonna chill and play it over and over again all day.
|
I'm with you on shorter albums. I don't like albums that drag on too long.
Also you guys keep mentioning samples. I thought it was all Adrian Younge's band playing this shiz live. No? |
oh yeah, the whole thing was live instrumentation. sorry i actually knew that but i just woke up when i made that post. :o the album's sound was definitely influenced by Ennio Morricone and Portishead though.
|
I'd say Morricone, Les Baxter, and Goblin (the Italian band, not Tyler :))
|
new Lord Quas song is too dope. y'all need to give it a listen: http://soundcloud.com/stonesthrow/qu...planned-attack
|
love Madlib, but was never crazy for the Quas project personally.
|
I think I botched that Portishead sample reference. I read they were sampled on the album (not uncommon) but it wasn't the part I was thinking of. I was thinking of a drum part in "The Sure Shot," but further listening has proved that to be an incorrect assumption.
EDIT: I am an idiot. Thanks louder. |
Damn.
Yeah, I posted before I read before I thought. It's apparently live instrumentation. Louder wins. Bad on me. I suck. It's that much more excellent if that's true. Holy shit. I'm listening to it right now and I still can't believe it. I think the influence definitely comes from Dario Argento collaborations with Morricone and Goblin. Some of those soundtracks are well worth owning, especially Suspiria. GFK's got some motherfuckin' taste. |
I win. I said live instruments first. ;)
Yeah my wife is a big horror score collector. She's got lots of Morricone and Goblin shit - mostly from Argento films as it happens. That Goblin shit is unreal. I threw in Les Baxter MOSTLY due to his incredible score for The Dunwich Horror. Youtube the theme. Mindblowing. |
NR wins indeed.
i'll check out the Suspiria soundtrack. seems super interesting. |
Tyler stepped up his production and moved on from rapping about rape and shocking things for the sake of shock value, but i still feel like he's stuck in a zone which kinda prevents him from being the great artist he COULD be.
Wolf is a good album though, don't get it twisted.. shit like "48", "Bimmer" and "IFHY" is some of the best material i've ever heard from him. but it's also all over the place and has too many songs which i feel shouldn't have been there.. his verse on "Rusty" was more than enough to cover the complaints about the criticism he gets, and for fuck's sake, leave that subject alone for the rest of the album. "Colossus" is borderline narcissistic and just unbearable to me, etc. while Tyler knows he's the shit, i could barely find any moments of positivity in this album. i actually found it depressing, in the same way as Rihanna's latest album "Unapologetic". famous people who can't leave their pseudo-drama behind. Bastard still remains his definitive statement, at least until he learns how to reinvent himself. |

Great fucking movie too. That would be an all time top ten film for me. |
new Chance the Rapper tape dropping tomorrow.

I agree about Wolf, and it really bums me out to admit that. I find the album to be lacking, despite being awesome. Soundwise it feels like a lateral move; there is nothing about the album that makes it feel like a progression lyrically, or even in terms of production.
That doesn't mean it's not a great record, but I've been waiting for this album for a long time, and it's not the game changer I expected. Tyler has a ways to go before he can be compared to Rza (or Gza, as one reviewer suggests, which is absolutely ludicrous). No hate for OF though. This is a great album. It just isn't a masterpiece of any kind, and Bastard owns it. |

hahaha i'm wondering how Kanye is going to react to this. |

nailed it. |
i'm excited about Pusha T's debut album "My Name Is My Name", coming out July 16.
particularly because this song reminds me of Clipse in their prime: https://soundcloud.com/illrootsradio...-on-the-boards |

been meaning to check out Chance. Will do so soon. |
one thing i don't get is Vampire Weekend, those guys seem to get a tremendous amount of praise.. but every song i've heard from them sucked.

it's not just you. Then again, I've never been a fan of Paul Simon's GRACELAND which seems to have been VW's blueprint. |

Didn't I tell you? Killer Mike was top shelf last year. I would still throw JJDOOM on the list, and even Cruel Summer, now that I've given in and become a straight up Kanye fanboy bitch. Seriously, Kanye is pretty much my most listened to hip hop artist these days. Fucking "Runaway" man. Fuckin' "Runaway." |
R.A.P is so dope. every track on it is a banger. El-P and Killer Mike have a great chemistry, can't wait for their upcoming collab project.
Cruel Summer is overhated. i mean it is nowhere as great as Twisted Fantasy or even Watch the Throne, but Mercy and New God Flow are GOD-tier songs. Kanye's next album is rumored to be titled "The Black American Psycho". what a great title that would be! |
That is the perfect album title.
Seriously. I hope that shit is for real. I also hope he ventures further into the "dark side" production wise, and sticks with the MBDTF production style. Fuck yeah. |
yo, this kid from Sweden dropped one of my fav songs of the year:

Acid Rap is really unique. it's soulful like some certified Chi-Town classics (The College Dropout and Be comes to mind), but it's more like a rap musical than a normal album.

lol, that's wack.
this beat has been stuck in my head for days, brehs (apparently from Kanye's upcoming album). might've been produced by Daft Punk. anyway it sounds sick. |

I'll listen to Graceland all day but I hate Vampire Weekend on principal. |
I'm not into the new Flaming Lips. The JT is great though.
hip hop wise - Chance's new mixtape seems alright. |
NR, I thought you were into the Terror. Or am I thinking of Monomania for some reason (sorry about never getting that to you, by the way. I can explain!)
What did I stop in here to say? Fuck me, I completely forgot. |
Oh that's right..
The new Lauryn Hill single is fucking great. Only listened to it twice, of course, and that was a week ago, but I listened twice in a row and was surprised by its muscle. Anyone have thoughts? I never thought I'd rep a Fugee again, but damn. |
![]() did anyone give this a listen? |
EL-P AND KILLER MIKE FINISH RUN THE JEWELS ALBUM, REVEAL FEATURES
http://potholesinmyblog.com/el-p-and...veal-features/ awwww yeah!! |

Terror is ok, but def my least fav Lips album in a while. It feels really aimless to me. I haven't heard the new Deerhunter yet, but I will. |
