Debut solo release for Narita, drummer with recent Tokyo Flashback stars Retolt Mandala. The Raven... is a set of clattering solo percussive lift-offs that combine tonal clusters of bells and skin with threads of slowly-evolving string drones that work to raise the whole deal to the kinda tranced out-of-body heights that sound much more exactingly keyed to the experience of shamanic states than the endless parade of indie bellshakers with world music pyjamas and saxophones engaged in "mystic" improvisations. This one arrives in the zone right from the get-go and moves deeper with every track. If you dig Boredoms and Amon Duul as much as Frank Perry and Milford Graves then yr a fucking champ. Limited edition release on this great Japanese underground imprint.

I haven't heard this one, but Subjective Spirit Sound has been putting out some pretty fantastic stuff for a while. They're probably my favorite CD-R label at the moment. More people should listen.

How is this? I've got quite a few Haino and love them all, but his discography is so vast and I know so few people who are into him that pointers are always appreciated.

MellySingsDoom 07.23.2008 07:47 AM

Got this lot at lunchtime:

Abba "Abba Gold" (for about the 3rd time)
Runaways "Runaways/Queens of Noise" 2CD set

I'm still waiting on my pre-order, it should be here today. But, the info on the vinyl is, the release date had to be bumped to Aug. 12th. Which is the same day they are doing a show here in Knoxville. So, yeah this was one of the last album's I bought as well.

musefreek 07.23.2008 09:27 AM

I went on an insane shopping spree at Generation Records and Other Music in New York and bought the following (what I can remember anyway):

LP:

Slint 10"
Led Zep IV
Tool - Lateralus
Breeders - new one
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dreams
Mika Miko
Pixies - the one with the woman with the nice tits
Vivian Girls 7"
Nirvana Sliver 7"
Hole Retard Girl 7"
Trail of Dead - 1st album
Trail of Dead - 2nd album
Misfits - Static Age

CD:

Abe Vigoda
Free Kitten - new one
Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
Liars - the drum album

shit, i bought loads more than this but my memory's shot. basically i spent $350 on music...

bought 14 vinyl albums and 9 cds is all i can remember

SOUND BLASTS! EP2

sonic youth, prong, pailhead, thin white rope

my peripheral sonic youth collection is coming together nicely.

This Is Not Here 07.23.2008 11:39 AM

Isn't there an outtake of Silver Rocket on there Rob?

Rob Instigator 07.23.2008 11:58 AM

yep. it is labeled Silver Rocket (Take 6)

noisereductions 07.23.2008 11:58 AM

It's a live version I thought... "take 6", the one used on SCREAMING FIELDS video... right?

Rob Instigator 07.23.2008 12:31 PM

it is supposed to be the screaming fields take. but I will need to verify with my VHS

demonrail666 07.23.2008 12:50 PM

Those EPs they used to give away with Sounds were great. I had one that had Pussy Galore on it. When would a national weekly music paper do the equivalent of that nowadays?

Of the three biggies (NME, Melody Maker, Sounds) Sounds was invariably the more interesting and musically open-minded.

noisereductions 07.23.2008 01:10 PM

Yr lucky. In America free cd's with magazines usually include either the worst emo imaginable or the worst metal imaginable. shrug.

Rob Instigator 07.23.2008 01:25 PM

fuck yeah the free shit in american magazines sucks the left nut

gmku 07.23.2008 01:43 PM

The only good free magazine CD I've ever found is the UNCUT Stones tribute. Lot of good bands doing great covers.

Rob Instigator 07.23.2008 01:50 PM

Is Uncut the magazine?

It's pretty standard Haino guitar and voice stuff. Sounds like Fushitsusha minus the other 2/3 of the band.
Search for the Haino thread on this board for pointers.

HECKLER SPRAY 07.24.2008 04:26 AM

Trumans Water - Spam Smash xxxxxxx.....
Hope it will be good.

An old favourite of mine - if you get the CD reissue you get some great bonus tracks (the singles, basically), including "These Frayed Edges", which I used to love as it was the track that introduced me to the band in the first place, thanks to John Peel.

noisereductions 07.24.2008 09:16 AM

I believe that both Uncut and The Wire are UK mags. Not American.

viewtiful_alan 07.24.2008 02:16 PM

Found these at half price books today:

acousticrock87 07.24.2008 06:13 PM

I went to buy the Slip, but it was $20 for a special edition something. I don't want that. I just want the CD for $10.

noisereductions 07.24.2008 06:32 PM

viewtiful, Tha Carter II is soooooo fucking good! Probably my favorite Lil Wayne album. SO many amazing tracks. That one blew my brain when it came out.

noisereductions 07.24.2008 06:40 PM

Just got this:

Really? is it better than Tha Carter III? I haven't gotten a chance to listen to it yet, but im deffinitley looking forward to it.
And to acoustic rock: you can get it for about 14 at best buy this week since its its first week out...

vegans4veal 07.25.2008 05:08 AM

i'm going to rough trade in a bit to waste a lot of money :(/:)

noisereductions 07.25.2008 07:17 AM

Carter II and III are very different beasts. They're both amazing. I can't really say I think one is better than the other. But those 2 albums along with DEDICATION 2 are definitely Wayne at his most incredible.

Rob Instigator 07.25.2008 11:21 AM

not exactly an album but I found

Thuston Moore - CINDY (rotten tanx)

He's alot more agressive on Tha Carter II and I love it.
If only he didn't have sucha generic thug persona going on on this album..

noisereductions 07.25.2008 01:05 PM

Not entirely though. What about "Shooter" for instance? or the reggae-tinged "Mo' Fire?" There's some amazing stuff that unfolds the more you listen to that album.
