consider myself burned!
i wont take the piss out of it again.......

atsonicpark 08.29.2010 06:40 AM

yeah dubstep is pretty much the best genre ever.

noisereductions 08.29.2010 08:04 AM

this might be stupid, but what exactly is dubset? Like how SYRFox pointed out that Burial is Dupstep, but Field is Minimal Techno. How is Dubstep defined or identified?

atsonicpark 08.29.2010 08:12 AM

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubstep ... just read that, you should be set. It's hard to describe in words, I think, you just have to hear a few of the albums...

The Field is so good, btw. YESTERDAY AND TODAY is mindblowing.

I just have FROM HERE WE GO SUBLIME, which I think is excellent.

atsonicpark 08.29.2010 09:02 AM

Yeah, SUBLIME is an amazing record, but YESTERDAY is like 100x better. It's got all the stuff that makes SUBLIME so good but.. I dunno.. it's just something else entirely. HIGHLY reccomended..

It's really wide, especially nowadays. As atsonicpark said, I guess once you've listened to quite a few dubstep albums you know what is and what is not dubstep - same with wonky. Let's say dubstep has usually a heavy focus on bass, halftime 140 BPM rhythms - which usually makes it kind of slow. But it does not necessarily apply: most of the more "mainstream" dubstep trackshave little to no bass, focusing on midrange wobbles, while some more atmospheric dubstep has no halftime rhythms and includes uk garage / 2-step reminiscences (burial for instance). There are also producers that include elements of minimal techno in their work (Sigha, ...), so it makes things even more confusing ahah. But it's worth getting into it, definitely.

And yes, both The Field albums are amazing. Personnally, Yesterday & Today is also my favorite, but the best Field track remains Over The Ice imo.

is there a really excellent SINGLE DISC primer compilation that you guys would suggest?

noisereductions 08.29.2010 11:29 AM

and would DJ Spooky's DUBTOMETRY album fall under the Dubstep genre?

the space & time compilation on hotflush recordings is incredible, but you'll mostly hear the more atmospheric side of the things. you should really hear it though, as it's super excellent.
i'd say the 5 years of hyperdub compilation as well, which is one of the best compilations i've ever heard, but it's two discs :p

haven't heard this record, but i've just check optometrix on youtube and it does not sound dubstep-ish. Sounds good, though

atsonicpark 08.29.2010 05:54 PM

def. 5 years of hyperdub, nr.

I guess when I think of dubstep (well, wonky really) I think of LOUD SNARE HITS, wobly bass, and kinda broken rhythms... I was always attracted to that sound in, like, Autechre... the beats seem to slow down and speed up and slow down like they're dying or something.. just really "awkward" sounding programming, but still highly musical. Of course, again, that's not all the records.

SpaceCadetHayden 08.29.2010 06:29 PM

NR, Ikonika's new album is one of the best albums of the year. Check it out. You won't be disappointed. 5 Years of Hyperdub is a great look into the genre.

atsonicpark 08.29.2010 06:44 PM

Yeah. Ikonika's my favorite album of the year.

Burial and Kode9 mix for Mary Anne Hobbs

SYRFox 09.12.2010 11:58 PM

yes, there was a thread about it a few days ago but people didn't do it justice. it's so fucking amazing. those new zomby, darkstar, etc, tracks, are so great. can't wait for darkstar's album.
basically the tracklist for that mix is near perfection...

on heavy rotation right now: truth - puppets. "the fatman", "legion" and "invaded!" are such killer tunes ..

SYRFox 09.13.2010 12:02 AM

THE FATMAN

atsonicpark 09.15.2010 06:16 AM

Been listening to tons of peverelist, definitely one of my favorites..

SYRFox 12.10.2010 12:32 PM

It's not even really dubstep. But WUT by Girl Unit is my new religion. Can't get it out of my head

UH
WUT
WUT

Track of the year, easily.

Has Shackleton been discussed yet? Fantastic project, "Blood on my Hands" gives me chills.
