I haven't been to that area, but I had a who girlfriend climbed the Mt. Doom thing and she showed me all the pictures whilst explaining how it was the most difficult trek of her life. I can't say I was jealous, but I would have loved to stand at the foot of it.

Mount Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom) is a trek I didn't do, but I'm not that your gf said about how knackering it must have been. I will climb Mount Doom one day, though, oh yes!

I hear there's a shortcut on the decent where rocks frequently fall down at lethal rates...

Yeah, NZ was fantastic. I want to go back again, and visit the South Island too. I haven't skiied since I was, like, 13, but would certainly give it a go on somewhere like Ruhapehu. I take it you've been on the slopes, then?

NZ is really beautiful from what i've seen
i haven't been skiing since i was about 10 but i remember enjoying it a lot for some reason. i think i'd rather sled.

Sledging's fun - the last time we did that was in Snowdon , Wales in 1997 - it was really fun, especially with some of the "suicide" runs we did, bombing down towards rivers and streams. I came a cropper a couple of times, I tell ya.
