You know you're getting old when...

The new Bruce Springsteen album becomes top priority on your shopping list.
It's gonna be afternoon naps, DIY catalogues and TV re-runs of Zulu from now on I think.

pbradley 10.01.2007 06:36 AM

Ugh, I hate Springsteen with a passion.

sonicl 10.01.2007 06:37 AM

I love that new Springsteen single, "Radio Nowhere". Reminds me of a good mid-to-late-period Ramones track.

Up for game of bowls anytime soon SonicL? I'll provide the werthers originals, you bring the dandelion and burdock.

sonicl 10.01.2007 06:46 AM

I can't make it this week, I'm having the hairs in my ears trimmed.

pokkeherrie 10.01.2007 06:52 AM

In that case it's reassuring to know that age hasn't caught up with me yet.

toxic johnny 10.01.2007 06:54 AM

Nor me... and I'm ancient.

gmku 10.01.2007 07:02 AM

If I don't like Springsteen, does that mean I'll never get old? I've never liked him.

sarramkrop 10.01.2007 07:03 AM

I've been listening to music that is old enough to be a couple of my fathers since forever, but I still drink from the fountain of youth. Just in case.

demonrail666 10.01.2007 07:07 AM

Radio Nowhere is a great song. Never thought of the Ramones but yeah, you're kind of right. Then again, so far as I can remember, Hungry Heart was originally written for The Ramones, so maybe the link isn't that strange at all. Either way, I'm gonna be walking straight past Thurston's new album to buy it today.

Mmm, good point. Maybe I should get Thurston's album as well. But then again, isn't he roughly the same age as Bruce anyway?

Paedo.

SynthethicalY 10.01.2007 10:27 AM

I don't like him, but can tolerate the music.

Norma J 10.01.2007 05:18 PM

Born to Run is a cool album.

atari 2600 10.01.2007 06:59 PM

The last album of his that I really like is The Ghost of Tom Joad, which was without the E. Street Band.

He and the E. Street Band played for like three to four hours this week for NBC's Today show. The broadcast kept cutting to them every so often for a song or two. One of the new ones that aired in its entirety was "Long Walk Home," and it was pretty good.

Listening to Magic right now. It's a Bruce Springsteen album, that's for sure. Consequently, he wont be losing any die hard fans with this, although he probably won't be gaining any new ones either.

Springsteen should have quit after Darkness On The Edge Of Town...that was his apex...imho of course.

That's also my favorite.

Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. excellent
Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle very good
Born To Run good to very good
Darkness on the Edge of Town excellent

He's done quite a few after Darkness that are worthwhile, albeit some moreso than others...

The River very good to excellent
Nebraska very good
Born in the U.S.A. good to very good
Live 1975-1985 good
Tunnel of Love okay to very good
Human Touch okay
Lucky Town okay to good
The Ghost of Tom Joad good

Springsteen can write great songs, as proved by Bowie ("Saint in the City"), Patti ("Because the Night"), and Waits ("Jersey Girl"), but his originals all come off as pure cheese in my book.

Occasionally if I'm in the mood for such cheese, he works as well as Manilow, who is actually a similar poetic talent. I can't think of a more wonderfully ridiculous lyric than "Outside the streets on fire in a real death waltz between what's flesh and what's fantasy/ And the poets down here don't write nothin' at all they just stand back and let it all be" Probably should have taken his own advice, but worth a laugh at the right moment.
