He's my fav, but I understand some people don't like him. Not sure WHY people don't like him, so I'm giving you out there one chance to vent and I will listen to your comments with tolerance. One time deal.

AS far as Costello goes.. The only album I ever heard I just couldn't get into

Danny Himself 01.31.2007 07:10 PM

He's alright. He scores points because he's from Liverpool.

porkmarras 01.31.2007 07:12 PM

He's boring. That in no way means he hasn't written some good songs. He bores me but that doesn't mean he's boring.

Toilet & Bowels 01.31.2007 07:28 PM

his voice and lyrics annoy me, and his music is boring as fuck

CHOUT 01.31.2007 08:44 PM

This Year's Model is a classic, one of my faves.

nads_youth 01.31.2007 08:51 PM

cause he has a stupid face!

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 02.01.2007 12:29 AM

His first few albums were great, and every once in awhile he puts out a new good one. The Delivery Man was a pretty good recent one.

My Aim Is True is so fucking good. She's Watching the Detectives is such a sweet song.

Rob Instigator 02.01.2007 10:29 AM

I have Watching the detectives on 7"

bought it ofr a quarter. perfect condish.

tesla69 02.01.2007 10:59 AM

He wears glasses. He hasn't written a good song since "Did You No Wrong".

i dont hate elvis costello. to be honest i really dont know a huge amount about him.

HaydenAsche 02.01.2007 01:33 PM

I don't hate Elvis Costello. His music has never thrilled me but he's not worth hating. He's a little fly. Just ignore him.

Toilet & Bowels 02.02.2007 08:38 AM

also i think elvis costello is for people who like the idea of being into music but can't get their head round the real stuff

Dead-Air 02.02.2007 10:33 AM

His stuff with the Attractions is great, some of the best "new wave" of it's day. Plus he had the class to bring Suicide on tour and start riots. Some of the later stuff is good in a classic rockish vein, but therein lies the problem - as time went on he might as well be Bob Seger.

porkmarras 02.02.2007 10:38 AM

I've never understood the whole thing with Suicide. They couldn't have been anymore different musically and aesthetically from him and the audience hated them even more for that.

fishmonkey 02.02.2007 11:19 AM

Fuck Presley
and...

Fuck Costello.

kingcoffee 02.02.2007 10:33 PM

MY AIM IS TRUE(1977)- Always makes top 100 lists, which pisses me off because it dismisses nearly two decades of other stuff. Still, it IS a good spin.

THIS YEAR'S MODEL- 1st w/ Attractions. Choat is wise to praise this mighty aggressive record.

ARMED FORCES- Weird, Bowie inspired songs about politics and sex.

GET HAPPY!!!- 20 r n' b influenced tunes. Classic.

TRUST- This is where things get interesting. Nods to Bo Diddly and Patsy Cline, plus a deut w/ some guy from Squeeze.

IMPERIAL BEDROOM- Lavish production from Beatles' engineer. Most of first side is flawless.

PUNCH THE CLOCK- I don't like it, but many people do. We can all agree that the song "Shipbuilding" is one of the greatest ever written.

GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD- Generally considered his lowest point.

KING OF AMERICA- Acoustic tribute to Americana. Timeless.

BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE- A stripped down rocker. Half-good, I'd say. "I Want You" is classic.

SPIKE- I like this ecclectic one alot. Plays w/ Allen Toussaint, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and members of Tom Waits' band. Most political.

MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE- Crap.

JULIET LETTERS- w/ Brodsky Quartet. An epistilary 20 song cycle about letters written to Juliet Capulet. Some really catchy shit.

BRUTAL YOUTH- A celebrated reunion w/ Attractions.

ALL THIS USELESS BEAUTY- Pretty low key. So so.

WHEN I WAS CRUEL- Roundly praised.

DELIVERY MAN- A more electric nod to Americana than King. Again, some instant classics.

I've skipped a lot of stuff. B-side compilations, albums co-produced w/ lots of people (Burt Bachrach for example), best ofs, soundtrack work, a ballet!

lungfish 02.10.2007 05:20 PM

so unfortunate that some of you guys don't like Costello.
i'm not his number one fan but i will stick up for the man.
i've only really listened to My Aim is True to Get Happy!! and lots of songs of those albums are incredible, especially Armed Forces and Get Happy!!
Black and White World, B Movie, The Imposter, Senior Service and Green Shirt come to mind, etc etc etc.
those Attractions albums are classic.
i guess he's not for everyone but he's pretty damn catchy and extremely musical. good shit.
i don't hate him at all so i'm with you.

dietzer123 02.10.2007 05:25 PM

i don't think he writes that great of melodies, he doesn't write that great of lyrics, i dont' care for his instrumentation.

Well, then you do understand, because therein lied the whole point! Costello was enough of a punk back then to want to say fuck you to his audience by putting the gods of electronic noise on for them to deal with first. Suicide revelled in pissing tossers off, so they surely enjoyed that hatred. I read an interview with Vega where her reminissed about running into Costello in a laundramat on the tour the day after one of the biggest riots when the show had to be called off. Costello thanked him, and asked if they could do it again that night, as he was extremely worn out from the tour and rather enjoyed the night off.

Toilet & Bowels 02.11.2007 08:32 AM

since when do americans say tosser?
