which sonic phase is the best?

What do you think:

nomadicfollower 04.20.2006 03:46 PM

80's. In my opinion all the albums they put out in that time were good.

HaydenAsche 04.20.2006 04:07 PM

80s. It may be opinion but my opinion is fact, bitch.

yeh i agree, theres no way i could pick a clear favourite

Hip Priest 04.20.2006 06:59 PM

My opinion - the eighties have 'Evol' and 'Sister', the nieties have 'Dirty', but, oh Good Lord, the 21st century has 'NYCG&F', 'Nurse' and the mightiest LP of them all, 'Murray Street' (and SYR6, but that's in a seperate bit of yr poll).

00's wins.

Good poll.

truncated 04.20.2006 07:03 PM

Tough call...percentage-wise, I think I dig more of their 80s work. But each one has its 'shining moments.'

truncated 04.20.2006 07:04 PM

Cock.

(I wanted to get to 950 posts.)

schizophrenicroom 04.20.2006 07:16 PM

shit. i went with the '80s.

Neongod 04.20.2006 08:42 PM

Very tough call. I had to go with the 90's as that's what turned me on to SY (Goo). The 80's are obviously their best work, but I hold a special place in my heart for the 90's stuff.
Good poll.

HaydenAsche 04.20.2006 08:47 PM

Wow only 18 of us have any brains at all.

Since when does brains == popular opinion? :p

trainyard bliss 04.20.2006 09:22 PM

i don't agree with the way you've categorized their eras according to decades. a thousand leaves definitely belongs with the 21st century stuff in "style" or whatever.

RdTv 04.20.2006 09:30 PM

im extremely hesistant to commit to any era....this is harder than I thought

sleep33 04.20.2006 09:32 PM

You should have split up the 80's in two. 1981-1983, 1984-1989. That would be more precise since there sound took a big turn in the middle of the 80's

Brains = I am freaking right.

RdTv 04.20.2006 09:50 PM

well I broke down and voted for it: the g80's. However I will let it be known that my favorite sonic era is between ATL until now. This is because I'm old enough to appreciate them more, and its when I got into them also. I mean when DDN came out I was 5, so I can't say that it was better being there or some pretentious shite of that nature, but I feel that the Youth were better, more creative, more influencial and more in their actual youth.

HaydenAsche 04.20.2006 09:51 PM

Yeah but it is DEFINITELY one or the other.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 04.20.2006 09:58 PM

their first decade. Its what started it all man!

Laila 04.20.2006 10:01 PM

i voted 80s' although i do love Nurse, i just feel that sy sound better playing harder sounding music like on confusion than layed back stuff like on Nurse.

CHOUT 04.20.2006 10:58 PM

The 80's albums have excited me the most.

krastian 04.20.2006 11:03 PM

80's are pretty hard to fuck with.

Proud Marie 04.20.2006 11:46 PM

84 - 88 takes the cake
BMR, Evol, Sister, and DDN are all perfect even though i love Goo, ATL, and all since 2000

selkcip 04.21.2006 01:41 AM

90s

candymoan 04.21.2006 02:47 AM

when considering "daydream nation" -- i think that goes along with "goo" and "dirty" on one side, and with "sister" on the other..
"experimental jet set..." was not so hot, but "washing machine" was great..
i voted 90s, but that's because most of my favorites belong in that era..

i would say after "a thousand leaves" the band took a *prog rock* turn.. that would be the current era..

i'm worried that we are turning into deadheads..
next thing you know, we'll be discussing solos and drum breaks..

khchris(original) 04.21.2006 03:44 AM

I think it's a little inconclusive.

You're going to find that majority(notice I said "majority" and not "EVERYONE"!) will favor the SY era they were first exposed to.

Moshe 04.21.2006 03:51 AM

my favs are: sister, ddn, wm, nycgf, syr3 & murray st - so i have representation of all eras.

sy2004 04.21.2006 05:05 AM

So far, I love everything that they have ever done, even starting to like NYC Ghost & Flowers lately, so no option for me to choose in this poll.

About all the negative comments about the recent albums, Sonic Youth have grown and progressed during their 25 year career, so have I. So I still admire them & love all their stuff, even the newer ones.

When I wanna hear Sonic Youth like in the eighties, I just put DD on or Sister or EVOL,...

I wonder which other band can still produce very decent records like Murray Street & Nurse after 25 years?

Imo, Sonic Youth stands on a lonely high place in the history of rock music.

PunkerViolence 04.21.2006 06:17 AM

Everything between SYep, and daydreamnation is mind blowing.

that is very accurate..

RdTv 04.21.2006 06:42 AM

I was first exposed to the 90'/00's era, but I voted for 80's because after listening to those albums, they were fresher, more creative and substancially more influential then what follows.

candymoan 04.21.2006 06:46 AM

few bands ever had the substance and integrity sonic youth has maintained over all these years..
a new SY album will always be something to look forward to..

and yes, i agree 80s phase was more creative and influential..

_slavo_ 04.21.2006 07:05 AM

I vote for 80s. All of my favourite SY records fall within this period.

ithinkimissyou 04.21.2006 07:11 AM

This is what I love about the youth....isnt it fucking great that we can even seriously ask this question? There arent many bands around that have released such consistently good quality albums over 25 years.

Incesticide 04.21.2006 07:13 AM

80s (from sonic youth ep to daydream nation)

candymoan 04.21.2006 07:19 AM

this thread is turning into "sonic youth used to be great in the 80s, but now they're not so good.."

i understand the reasoning behind choosing the earlier phase, but again, we all have our personal choices..

i prefer "goo" to "evol", and i prefer "sonic nurse" over "experimental jet set..." i think "sister" was better than "murray st", and "daydream nation" was greater than "bad moon rising.."

it is not about the timeframe these records were released..

Inhuman 04.21.2006 07:45 AM

I like all their stuff, but I think their best stuff was in the 80's. Like...Whitey Album is simply one of the best album's I ever bought, and Confusion is Sex / Kill yr Idols is enriched with lots of my favorite SY songs. I love their sound now too, stuff off Nurse, Murray, and Rather Ripped giving a more pop-ish sound.

I don't view this thread as that at all. The way I feel about the 90/00 is very much different than the 80's. My favorite era is from ATL to the present day, but I don't think its the "best". Every artist to a lesser or greater degree loses some steam as they mature and continue recording new material. On the other hand they pick up experience and branch out into new areas and experiment with more material. So, there is no right or wrong era, its up to you as the listener to decide, just because a lot of us seem to be in agreement with the 80's doesn't negate SY's work after that time peroid.

candymoan 04.21.2006 07:59 AM

that is a good perspective...

but the thread is asking that very question you're trying to avoid -- "which sonic phase is the best?"
my objection was intended to be aligned with your concerns..

we are basically saying the same thing, but the overwhelming popularity of the 80s on this thread implies a deterioration..
that should not be the case..
