Question for Experimental Jet Set, Trash, and No Star Lovers
Please disregard this thread if you are not absolutely in love with Experimental Jet Set, Trash, and No Star.
When I was a teenager my sister somehow got a hold of this album and when she played it, it absolutely blew me away. A year or so ago I decided that my life would obviously be better if I added some more Sonic Youth to it. So I picked up two albums: Daydream Nation and Dirty. However, after listening numerous times to ensure I've given them a decent chance, I didn't like a damn song on either of those albums. So that brings me here, to ask you for your help. Where can I find the magic of Experimental Jet Set, Trash, and No Star? Does that magic exist on any of the other Sonic Youth albums, or did Sonic Youth just decide to cram it all on that particular album? Thanks! |
You're trolling us right? A thread about the universally least liked SY album and saying you didn't like a single song from one of the universally recognized best SY albums and another definitely great one? ill admit that recently i reassessed EJSTNS and i realized its better than i ever thought, i almost ranked it above Goo once.... but really??

Thanks for the feedback but I'd prefer to hear from someone with (apparently oddball) tastes more similar to my own. |

You might find something of interest on Washing Machine or maybe Made in USA but ExpJetSet's style is kind of unique in the SY catalogue. I love ExpJetSet, and think it gets an unfair rap, it's a beautiful and unusual record. Rather Ripped is clearly SY's worst album, and by a long way.
|
Also maybe their self titled album (as in check it out, it's awesome and also kind of different to SY's other stuff)
|
Well, I love both experimental & RR even Experimental is the least favourite also to me. I think you should try GOO, RR & Eternal because along with experimental, DDN & Dirty theyīre most straightforward SY-records. But of course itīs possible you donīt like those too.
|
Well, Nurse also didnīt have much more experimentalism as experimental. And of course Sister rocks as hell!
|
Try Thurston's Psychic Hearts album from the same era/studio.

do you have EJSTANS demos? + this Quote:

It takes all kinds.....

Psychic Hearts sounds like one third of an SY album

No I didn't forget it, I thought about including it but then decided it might be a bit jammy and sprawling considering (what I imagine to be) the OPs tastes. |
Psychic Hearts isn't that bad, it just isn't that good either
|
Well, I think like Chris if someone likes Experimental, he might like Psychic even itīs not as great as Experimental. Also if one likes the sounds of Experimental, he might like Sister because they are made in the same studio and have quite same sounds (RR also, but I think itīs sounds are more modern).
The songs you Toilet put here are of course really great, but many of them have quite different vibes as in Experimental. |
Maybe NYC Ghosts & Flowers, as it is also a strange detour of an album like Jet Set is, though it is very different from Jet Set.
|
exp jet set is one of my favorites as well.. i would suggest washing machine and a thousand leaves, though neither of those albums are so packed with details as EJSTNS is.. the songs are more long-form, but there are similar vibes here and there. check "no queen blues," "saucer like," and the title track from washing machine.
a thousand leaves is possibly 'softer', but it contains a lot of raw, weird and delicate elements.. it's a beautiful, inconsistent recording. there's variety to it. |

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. It sounds like almost every album has been recommended by someone, and there's no consensus. It will take a while, but I'll give some of those a try and let you know how it goes.
I started with Washing Machine and can say that I definitely like The Diamond Sea--minus the 15+ minutes of unnecessary noise. The first non-Experimental song I like--yay! Too early to judge the rest of that album as I always need a lot of time to let music fully soak in. |
Tokyo Eye is my favorite jam from EJST&NS. Put it on and turn it up!

Again, you are either the most adept SY troll EVER or simply the perfect storm of the antithesis of SY fan preferences |

Before I saw SY play live I never enjoyed the noise jam parts of songs. |
The "noise" is what I first fell in love with when I heard Daydream nation....
My favorite 4 minutes of sonic youth is the last 4 minutes of MOTE |
I really have always loved Diamond Sea! After singing period there is really first that "sound sea" I really enjoy that, then those wondeful guitar feedbacks! Also really love that longer backward ending.

For me it's the part where Silver Rocket hits the skids and fragments into shards only to fuse together again like the liquid-metal cop from Terminator 2. |

dude..... analogies lie this are why we miss you around here |

Can I just add that EJSTNS is one of my favourite all-time albums. By anyone ever. To me it's just so perfect that this album came out in '94 at the height of commercial grunge. I mean that just adds to it, there's so much more to its allure than that... but it's ineffable, of course, so I shan't pontificate further...

I find this thread funny is all. I don't mean to insult you or anything. It's humorous to me that you absolutely loved this album yet...didn't like a single song in DDN.... I'm not good with words. so I just say....lol. |
but i didn't say anything about DDN.. what makes you think i dislike every song on it?
|
it's hard to like "experimental, jet set" as a whole. "tokyo eye" and "sweet shine" are so different. if you like the howling guitar of "tokyo eye", older fans like me will redirect you to "eliminator JR" and if you like the tenderness of "sweet shine" you will be advised to listen to "contre le sexism". in conclusion "Exp, jet set" is more than an album. it's a "best of", a crossroads in which each song can find a soulmate in another SY album. the two others album that I understand someone can not like are "washing machine" because it's too erotic and "sonic nurse" because it's too sad, but for daydream nation and Dirty i don't understand that someone can not like them
|
I like Experimental as a whole. As a matter of fact I like every SY-album as a whole, I think theyīre all really strong entities (of course almost every album has some weaker song like Sister has Hot Wire, but really I canīt think Sister without Hot Wire). Hard to understand why someone thinks Washing Machine erotic or Nurse sad. I havenīt find much erotic in SY (yes, I know there is that dirty picture in some dirty cd-versions and or course there is something erotic in Flower and yes, Addicted To Love-vid is erotic). Also I think there is much sad in every SY-album. Thatīs the one reason why it is my favourite band.

thanks for pointing me this out, I never noticed it. it's true that the most erotic song of sonic youth is "on the strip" but "washing machine" has a languorous sound that is one of the reasons why I don't listen to it anymore. and for the sadness of nurse it's at least melancholic according to the titles of the songs "unmade bed" and "i love you golden blue" and also the video of the man disguised in frog |
