RIP david bowie
|
Fuck me.
|
indeed. hadn't listened to him all that much in recent times (outside of the station to station to scary monsters stretch) but cannot deny how indelible a mark he made on my own listening preferences and indeed foundational understandings of music/sound. can honestly say that without him I likely wouldn't have been exposed to so much of what I now hold dear which in the popular/wider/'mainstream' consciousness inarguably qualifies bowie as an immeasurable legend.
|
i got home after a night shift, just found out, can't believe it. i didn't know he had a cancer. couple of weeks I saw his new video, thinking, new album, he keeps going..legend..
|
R.I.P. Cancer was suprise to me too. Will put Man Who Sold the World on today.
|
I mean listening to something purportedly contemporaneous to the fucking rolling stones at age 9 and hearing this kind of stuff is so remarkable, that he was able to achieve this level of success while being an entirely uncompromising figure and bringing incredibly wild approaches to the general populace as he did, mother of christ. one of the first times I heard music which resonated with how I felt, as if someone was making sound from the same perspective as myself.

so, so sad.
|
|
Very sad indeed, R.I.P.!
|
He left us with this incredible work...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kszLwBaC4Sw He was the first take the Bowie brand public on the stock exchange. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukne...-to-earth.html |
Fuck, fuck, fuck- I just read about this literally two minutes ago. I've been out covering a story all morning and didn't get a chance to check in on any news until just now.
I have no time to even read an article, but I'm here to say this is some BULLSHIT! RIP David Bowie. You beautiful, wonderful, mad son of a bitch. We love you. |
Some bullshit indeed. Fare thee well...
|
:(
I listened to Soul Love and Be My Wife on the train this morning upon reading the news and nearly teared up. A legend who made a huge impact on my life and also influenced a lot of my current favorite artists. Blackstar is an excellent album, he left us with a bang. RIP. |
Damn....totally didn't expect this. I didn't even know he even had cancer.

Nor did I. It makes that 2012 Flaming Lips track "Is David Bowie Dying?" sound even more unnerving in retrospect. Maybe it's been going on a while and some people knew? |

neither did Brian Eno...... ![]() The cassette was my first ever Bowie purchase. From the opening beats of, "Five Years," this 7th grader was hooked! The ticket was from the only time I saw Bowie in concert......Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie on Friday the 13th, the perfect trifecta! ![]() ![]() |

Hmm. I saw NIN and Bowie back in the day too. Can't recall if it was on a Friday. Also the only time I saw the Duke live, which almost makes me feel now that I never got the experience of seeing Bowie totally on his own. Sigh. |
I was going to listen Man Who sold, but instead I put Scary Monsters. It´s my favourite after Ziggy Stardust-album, always hit me much more than for example Low, Heroes or Lodger. And the reason is not just Ashes to Ashes which I think is one of the best Bowie songs, the whole album is just so amazing!
I am glad I saw him alive. It was after his Earthling-album. One of the best moments was when he performed Quicksand, also one of my favourite songs. My top5 Bowie albums in order: 1. the Man Who sold the World 2. Hunky Dory 3. Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust 4. Scary Monsters 5. Space Oddity (used be just David Bowie at first). |

Floating in the most peculiar way. Goodbye to David Bowie. Tony Visconti's words seem right: He left indeed in a blaze of glory. The videos for "Blackstar" and "Lazarus" made me feel terror, and now it seems more evident there are contemplations of mortality in both of them. I thought vaguely about Johnny Cash in his final days, when I read that article and the commentary from Brian Eno.
The majority of his music is fascinating, and great beyond words but he also was an awesome presence in some movies. It recently crossed my mind that it would be appropriate for David Lynch to explore and unveil some of the haunting mysteries regarding Phillip Jeffries on "Twin Peaks". |
I must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Bytor Peltor and hipster_bebop_junkie again.

Some really thoughtful memories on Bowie from Thurston, Lee and Kim. Bowie had a vision, was a trailblazer and didn't give a damn what people thought... |
I feel like it's still going to be many many years before all the souls and ears can start to fully digest such a discography.

As much as I am fan of David Bowie's music there's so much of it I haven't really given a thorough listen to. I'd heard many of the singles from albums and I had Ziggy Stardust, and Hunky Dory, but there was a lot, particularly his last few albums, so I went to youtube on monday and in succession listened to Earthling, Heathen, and The Next Day in succession. I still have yet to listen to Black Star but I'm almost dreading it. It feels too soon, but I know I will listen to it eventually.

I'm having the same issue. On Friday I saved it on Spotify to listen to soon. On Monday morning I heard the news. Since then I've felt weird about actually listening. I don't know. |
Jesus Christ Monkeyballs, the lineup for the "previously scheduled tribute event that has turned into a memorial for David Bowie" is unacceptable. Except for Robyn Hitchcock — and at least half the audience will go, "Who is that guy again?"

Also, fuck cancer.

Bowie's QUICKSAND
I'm closer to the Golden Dawn Immersed in Crowley's uniform Of imagery I'm living in a silent film Portraying Himmler's sacred realm Of dream reality I'm frightened by the total goal Drawing to the ragged hole And I ain't got the power anymore No I ain't got the power anymore I'm the twisted name on Garbo's eyes Living proof of Churchill's lies I'm destiny I'm torn between the light and dark Where others see their targets Divine symmetry Should I kiss the viper's fang Or herald loud the death of Man I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought And I ain't got the power anymore [CHORUS] Don't believe in yourself Don't deceive with belief Knowledge comes with death's release I'm not a prophet or a stone age man Just a mortal with the potential of a superman I'm living on I'm tethered to the logic of Homo Sapien Can't take my eyes from the great salvation Of bullshit faith If I don't explain what you ought to know You can tell me all about it On, the next Bardot I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought And I ain't got the power anymore Dinosaur Jr's QUICKSAND I'm closer to the Golden Dawn I can't believe the wagon's gone It's history I'm living in a callous realm Where others seem to dig it Just too much reality I'm frightened by the total goal I'm drawing to the ragged hole And I ain't got the wagon anymore No, I ain't got the wagon anymore I'm the twisted name on Uma's eyes I'm living proof of Cindy's lies Of destiny I'm drawing between the light and dark Where others see their targets I can't see anything Should I leave the engine on To listen to that mountain song Sinking in the quicksand of my thoughts And I ain't got the wagon anymore Don't believe in yourself Don't deceive with belief The knowledge comes with death's release Oh, oh, oh, oh Not too stable Hanging by a string Can't face the thoughts No wheels will bring I gotta go It's bad enough being at home Without a way to leave the damage Is gonna show If I don't explain What you oughta know You can tell me all about it At the next ball show I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thoughts And I ain't got the power anymore Don't believe in yourself Don't deceive with belief The knowledge comes with death's release Oh, oh, oh, oh |

Like to put this Bowie´s first quite forgotten album from 1967. It´s not among his greatest albums, but I really like it! And it´s very interesting when you can hear many characters of his later albums in this, he was already then very personal composer & singer. His time wasn´t yet to come. |
