Pavement!

It took me a very very long time to get into them but I finally did it.
So my question is: Which album should I buy first? (I don't own any Pavement album yet, I know it's a shame.)
BTW Danny I'm looking in your direction.

king_buzzo 03.14.2007 02:09 PM

hmm i only listened to 2, slanted enchanded and woowe zowwe or whatever they were awesome.

sarramkrop 03.14.2007 02:13 PM

Quick!Somebody close the door of this thread with these two trapped inside it!

k-krack 03.14.2007 02:14 PM

Get Slanted & Enchated (one of my favourites of all-time) first, followed by Crooked Rain, followed by Wowee Zowee. The rest, whatever order is cool.
Chronological for the first three, I says.

Silent Dan Speaks 03.14.2007 02:14 PM

I've heard slanted and enchanted, crooked rain, crooked rain, and wowee zowee.

I think crooked rain, crooked rain is my favorite. Filmore Jive rules.

afterthefact 03.14.2007 02:45 PM

I agree. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. And make sure it's LA's Desert Origins. It has good "B-sides, singles, and other free-floating music from Pavement's "Crooked" days."

Amazon is much better with words than I am.

Trasher02 03.14.2007 02:46 PM

I was thinking of buying Slanted and Enchanted first then Crooked rain.
But since they both appear to be good I'll just order them both.

afterthefact 03.14.2007 02:50 PM

couldn't hurt...

Rob Instigator 03.14.2007 03:22 PM

If I were you I woudl start at the very begining and get WESTING BY MUSKET & SEXTANT first,

listen to spiral stairs' and S.M.'s lo-fi noise freakouts, then get Slanted & Enchanted

and rock that shit homie, then go and get Crooked Rain Crooked Rain, which is their first truly "mature"
Pavement album,

and fucking fall in love with it. Then get woweee zoweee

and brighten the corners.....

fishmonkey 03.14.2007 03:57 PM

My favorite Pave album is Wowee
followed by Terror Twlight.

sun city girl 03.14.2007 04:01 PM

slanted first, then westing and crooked rain.

auto-aim 03.14.2007 04:01 PM

I thought cut your hair sucked - so ive never got into them. However I did really like "Here", I think the song was called. So i dont know - anyone want to convince me?

Yes, I do.

um... LIKE THEM! LIKE THEM NOW!

did that work?

Rob Instigator 03.14.2007 04:09 PM

cut yr hair is a great song, and sounds nothing like any other pavement, which is why they released it as a video first. to drive away superficial people.

Darlin' don't you go and cut your hair
Do you think it's gonna make him change?
"I'm just a boy with a new haircut"
And that's a pretty nice haircut
Charge it like a puzzle
Hit men wearing muzzles
Hesitate you die
Look around, around
The second drummer drowned
His telephone is found
Music scene is crazy
Bands start up each and every day
I saw another one just the other day
A special new band
I remember lying
I don't remember a line
I don't remember a word
But I don't care, I care, I really don't care
Did you see the drummer's hair?
Advertising looks and chops a must
No big hair!
Songs mean a lot when songs are bought
And so are you
Face right down to the practice room
tension and fame's our career
career, career, career

Rob Instigator 03.14.2007 04:10 PM

Parfum V is my favorite pavement song

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 03.14.2007 05:52 PM

Brighten
Crooked
Wowee

marleypumpkin 03.14.2007 06:01 PM

No matter what you start w/, you can't go wrong. Pavement is just that good. But that's my opinion.

You are? Sheeee-it.

Knowing your musical tastes, Trasher, I'd reccomend you start with Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. The deluxe edition is pretty cheap so I'd get that. That album would ease you into them. After listening to the second CD of the deluxe edition, I'd go on to buy Wowee Zowee. Deluxe, of course. Then Brighten The Corners, Terror Twilight, THEN Slanted and Enchanted + Westing.

That isn't the order I bought the albums in, but I believe it would be the best order for you.

Danny OUT.

Why S+E last?! It's the best, you silly bastard!

Danny Himself 03.14.2007 07:06 PM

It's nowhere near their best. It definitely doesn't hook you in, like most first albums. It's something so ridiculously indie that you have to buy it later on.

This is funny because it's true.

Pax Americana 03.14.2007 07:51 PM

I started with Slanted and Enchanted and it remains my favorite Pavement album. They're all good though.

Shipper 03.14.2007 08:38 PM

The first 2 "serious" albums I ever had were "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" and "Experimental....." my cool older cousin did me a tape with one on each side, so personally I'd go for "Crooked Rain" first.

fluxequalsrad 03.14.2007 11:00 PM

Get "Crooked Rain" first. LA's desert origins is dirt cheap and its really cool to immerse yourself in the whole era with all the fucking b-sides and outtakes. "

thats how i got into pavement.

Then when i got slanted I was like "What the hell is this" ...its alot more spazzed and challenging then most people admit, I mean there is plenty of perfect pop but fuck its so out of tune and trebly,.. definetely crooked rain first,

No way! Sooo fucking good! It was my first, and remains my favourite.

ZEROpumpkins 03.15.2007 01:28 AM

Chronoligocal but get the deluxe editions of all of them.

SonikJesus 03.15.2007 01:41 AM

Just get them in order of release. I've only heard S&E, CR,CR, and WZ. They are all good. I always liked S&E but never as much as everyone else. In the last week, I've been listening to it and now I like it more than I ever did. I still think CR,CR is better though. But there's no use comparing two different albums. The first three are very good.

Get the deluxe reissues too; Matador has done a great job with those.

Rob Instigator 03.15.2007 08:35 AM

slanted & enchanted needs to be listened to repeatedly, especially driving around, and you will be slammed by the furious bad-assness of the fucking genius album.

It is the greatest thing they ever did in My opinion, besides YR KILLING ME! YR KILLING ME AGAIN!

HECKLER SPRAY 03.15.2007 09:08 AM

Now you've got the perfect re-issues by Matador, so buy them in chronologic order to appreciate the genius of this band.
I can't choose which is my favourite. it depends on my mood.
Have a look at the DVD "The Slow Century", a good vision of the band, with Spiral Stairs ass at Lollapalooza...

GrungeMonkey 03.15.2007 04:55 PM

I only have Slanted and Enchanted, and I found it a little disappointing, really, after all that I'd read about it. Its a good record, don't get me wrong, but not quite as good as everyone says it is. I will buy more Pavement though because I am IN LOVE with Stephen Malkmus' self titled solo album...

that explains everything. if you love sm's solo shit you are not going to dig westing nor slanted too much.

sm's solo shit is weak pussy pop country music bullshit!

I think its great. And its very narrow-minded of you to dismiss it so quickly because you think its "pussy pop". I can listen to hardcore noise with the best of them, its not anything like that that stops me from loving Slanted and Enchanted, I just think the songs weren't as brillaint as I expected them to be.

schizophrenicroom 03.15.2007 07:37 PM

my first taste of pavement was a b-side to crooked rain called "raft" that's just as good as any of their a-sides.

but go with crooked rain. gold soundz is one of the best songs of the '90s and ever.

That's what I thought at first. But I've been listening to it a lot recently to try to get into it and now I think it's awesome. I always thought it was good, but now it's amazing.

k-krack 03.16.2007 01:25 AM

I already posted in here... but here it is...
Pavement is honestly one of the fucking greatest bands of all-time. There is no way around it, they simply fucking rock. They have this fucked up thing... like, time-release love of them, but if yr patient, they creep up on you, and you fucking love them. Everyone should listen to Pavement.

ZEROpumpkins 03.16.2007 02:11 AM

The quality of their B-sides is amazing.

king_buzzo 03.16.2007 06:32 AM

gold soundz is incredibly addictive.

Rob Instigator 03.18.2007 11:54 AM

i just find all of malkmus' solo stuff to be so boring. just bland genero-rock
