I loved the Wild Flag album. Just effin' great rock music. I'd put it ahead of all the SK albums except One Beat and No Cities to Love, which are perfect. The Woods close behind.
|
The Hot Rock is an interesting choice for #1... not what I would have expected. But it's got some of their best tracks, for sure.
I don't have the patience or memory to list all that shot out. I haven't even heard some of those albums. But my favorite S-K albums are Dig Me Out, The Hot Rock and .... actually, I'd probably have to put No Cities To Love at #3 at the moment. |

From a music critic perspective The Hot Rock is definitely not their best album, but from my own personal perspective its not just my fav SK related record, its in my top 5 ALL TIME for any record by any band! Quote:

I like Quasi. Never really went all out for Wild Flag like a lot of folks did, but they definitely made some good rock in an era when not a lot of good rock was coming out (not unlike now). Loved, loved loved the Corin Tucker Band.
But there are a few titles on this list I need to check out. |

Also i think Kill My Blues might honestly be some of Corin's best work ever i am just too attached to SK records to rank it above them but

Hey that's exactly what I was going to say. Except it's been so long since I heard the album that I was worried I wasn't remember things accurately. But yes, that was my impression too. Wild Flag live was really something to behold. Saw them only once, but one of the best rock shows I've ever seen. I was surprised because I was an SK live nut, and really only saw WF because of their association. But they were surprisingly balls out powerful. Kinda like seeing Viet Cong because, y'know, Women was seminal, and being astonished that they actually kick all holy ass. |
During the SK hiatus Wild Flag shows were my fix.. and i agree that they were a FORCE.
Have you seen Ex Hex? Mary was so timid in Wild Flag her solo shows that i was blown away at how kick ass and outgoing she is in Ex Hex |

Have you heard her 2005 solo album, also called Ex Hex? I love it, as well as the followup The Shapes We Make. Fantastic guitar playing |
Yes i saw her on that tour too! But nothing she has ever done is as gregarious as the band Ex Hex..

Oh man that would have been great. |
1. The Hot Rock
2. Quasi - Featuring Birds 3. The Spells - Age of Backwards 4. Quasi - Field Studies 5. Heavens to Betsy & Excuse 17 6. Screw the rest, maybe not Call the Doctor, but that's about it. |
man I used to love Quasi. Haven't really listened to em in years. But I thought they were great.
Also, I really loved All Hands On The Bad One. |
Here's a fun list with links...SK's 10 best cover songs...

I love this list! By the way, you got the full EP version of Age of Backwards from me yes? I uploaded it and posted here a few years ago but I saved the four extra tracks that Carrie released via her NPR blog back in 2009.. indeed releasing those was the process that created Wild Flag!! PM is you don't have those other four songs I will send them to you mos def Quote:
Same as T&B, PM me if you don't have the other four tracks which make it an EP rather than an maxi-single |

Man that was just such a fun record! I think of all their records this is the most straight up fun record, its not too serious even while it has some serious tracks. It feels like a "no pressure" record of tunes they just wanted to put out! I mean Dig Me Out was heavy, and The Hot Rock was an art-rock masterpiece, but All Hands is definitely a fun interlude between The Hot Rock and One Beat |

Yeah, AHOTBO surprised me at first with how loose and borderline bouncy it sounded. So little distortion! But soon I was humming those songs all over the damn place. Admittedly, it's the SK album I've listened to the least. But it has its place in their catalogue for sure. |

Revisit it please.. it is a totally FUN record and it will stick with you. I think it is most reflective of what LIVE S-K is, just a lot of fun! Indeed its what I missed SOOOOOOOOO much during the hiatus and why I was glad to have Wild Flag and Corin Tucker Band to fill in the fun shows gap! All Hands on the Bad One was THEE record of 2001 for me. I listened to it like EVERY day and had that CD with me like EVERYWHERE I went. In fact, I think its the S-K record that I listened to the most aside from how much I worshiped at the church of Dig Me Out when it came out. The Hot Rock is still me favorite for many many personal reasons, BUT All Hands is a totally kick ass record.. I may just have to re-rank it on my list |
was just listening to All Hands again and was transported back in time to being a teenager, smoking pot in the bushes of a park on my way walking to high school... wow! its always amazing how vivid your memories are when triggered by something.. a total flashback! Its like, I can not just see myself, I can see that entire moment in every single detail.. the colors of the bushes and the grass in that dim gray overcast morning... the smells.. my own thoughts that morning!! even EXACTLY how was feeling to each specific song on my headphones...
whoa... THIS is why I love music. My memory is fucked from smoking pot for twenty years BUT its all in there somewhere, I just have a fucked up filing system. I need triggers to bring up the files of memory.. |
I don't have the extra tracks from The Spells, I didn't even know there were any. I only have the Age of Backwards CD. I'd appreciate it a lot if you uploaded the extra stuff please thank you.

They're not Age Of Backwards extras/outtakes; they're four songs Carrie and Mary recorded circa 2000 looking to make a Spells LP. Here's the story goddammit: http://www.npr.org/sections/monitorm...t_vs_bird.html |
Although I liked a few tracks on All Hands I found it a bit disappointing after Hot Rock (my first SK record), I didn't understand why after making such and unusual and unique record as The Hot Rock they would basically regress to more simplified and normally structured songs. But I guess it's sort of comparable to SY putting out DDN and then writing songs like My Friend Goo and Mary Christ.

Oh yeah I was all over that shit in '01. It was my favorite SK album for a while. Saw them several times during that period. I felt that One Beat's seriousness and the thunderous rock drumming on it and the Woods kinda edged AHOTBO out, but it's a great album. Imma listen to it right now actually. Then the Hot Rock. "The Size of our Love" gets me every Fucking time. |

My Friend Goo = pretty much the only Sonic Youth song that I always skip. In fact I'd prefer to pretend it was never made. I cut it from the version of Goo on my iPod. |

Either way if anyone needs them let me know, couple years ago i sent them to like 20 people here so apparently their harder to find then i thought. |
