I want to rock.
while talking to my friend about guitar hero 2 for xbox360, he was shocked at the price.
he suggested that instead of spending the $90+ on the game and controler (gotta have that) that I buy a real guitar instead. my response was "I had a guitar. remember? someone pawned it for dope." (after which I felt slightly bad). although I think guitar hero 2 would definitely be the bomb....I wonder if he's right and I should just suck it up and teach my left-handed self how to play. suggestion? |
Do it, teach yourself guitar.
|
Learn to play a real guitar. You don't need an xbox to play it and it's much more impressive than being a video game nerd.
|
make noise instead of pretending to play some dumb riffs.
|
Restringing is easy, but I guess if you're a first timer you should get some HALP.
|
Which one can you eventually pawn and buy more dope with?
|
I'd say guitars. The general design of guitars hasn't changed for a good 50 years now, whereas the xbox 360 will be as useless as a ps1 come 2010.
|
True. Buy the guitar. If you play it for ten years and then need drugs, you'll still be able to get at least a ball of glass.
|
My dad bought Guitar Hero II. I think it is a retarded piece of shit. I hate it so much. I want to destroy it. But I'm too cheap to actually destroy it. So I beat the whole fucking thing in 2 days. Don't bother.
|
Quote:
did you you beat it one HARD?? that's crazy shit. my problem with the game is being left handed. not being a guitar player, I would think that the left handed fingering would make it easier, but I guess the rhythm is all in the dominant hand. my sour notes earned me enough ridicule from my friends that I wanted to learn how to rock (and thereby prove them wrong). should I get a cheap electric guitar or an accoustic? personally, I want to make loud noise more than I want to make music. ![]() |
Ha, I beat it on medium. Hard isn't that hard. I just won't get 5 out of 5 stars anymore.
|
IT'S A TEXAS PSYCHOBILLY FREEEEAKOUT, THAT'S WHAT IT IS!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3yEjyuw42YY this kid rocks. he even turns away from the tv. it's nice to see the Rev. get love from a video game too. |
Let's face it: Video games are always better than real life activities. If they weren't, this country wouldn't have a weight problem. Real guitars are not fun. I've never played video game guitar, but I imagine that it would be worlds better than the real thing.
|
I'd say guitar. I'd say pawn shop = no. Buy it direct off a junkie friend instead.
Everyone has a friend who doesn't need their guitar anymore. You don't need a good one. I bet you can find one to learn on for $40. I did. Canadian. But if it's electric you gotta buy an amp. |
Quote:
and THIS is the exact reason why I wonder. I know that I'm lazy and it would take serious drive to learn how to play a real one (especially since I'm old as dirt). it's just that the long term benefits seem better. I WANT to play. Quote:
thankfully, my friends are no longer junkies. :p but I hear what you're saying. I think I may just end up buying something new, with a cheap amp and maybe a pedal to make it noisy. |

Play real music with melodies instead of making dumb noise that anyone can make to make yourself look cool. Just playing, man. I had to take it. |
WAIT.
I have the solution. Buy dope. |

See, I grew up with video games rather than musical instruments. So naturally I'm more inclined to play video games. My parents never put any emphasis on music, or learning to play it. So when I started taking guitar lessons, it was a huge leap for me. I don't take them anymore. They didn't really have any effect on me, as far as making me want to play more. I know I probably learned a lot during the 5 years that I was there. You'd hardly be able to tell, though. One thing that bothers me about playing the guitar nowadays is that I'm not certain I'm attracted to the instrument itself, at least not enough to make me want to keep learning and playing it. When I get ideas for songs, or whatever, it's not the guitar that I immediately think of playing them on. And I know I'll probably never get to the point where I would want to play the guitar in front of anyone, no matter how capable I could be on the instrument in the future. My point is that I would much rather play Yoshi's Island and just listen to the beautiful music on that video game, while trying desperately to reunite baby Mario with his parents. |
I love you, Lux

Guitar. hands down. And, if you play yr cards right, you might be able to squeeze a pratice amp out of that $90 too.

but I like dumb noise! it's what get's me off! and like lux said, I really don't think I'd end up playing for a crowd to look cool for. personally, I think that I'd be more suited for drums, however truncated's scorn made me smash my invisible kit (as well as my dreams of one day being a world class air-drummer). now I'm onto guitar. despite my inclination to go 'lectric, I was just convinced to buy an accoustic to learn on. I'm going to be the next peter, paul and fuckin' mary. |

I am really not kidding about the video game music. In a way it's on a higher level than other forms of music. It plays on a loop (unless it's like one of those skateboarding games where they have songs by real rock bands, which by now they've probably configured it so that you can make a playlist of those provided songs, and listen to that while you're playing a course), but yeah, it plays on a loop and it has to be good enough to be distinguishable from any other video game music, and good enough that it can be played on a loop and not become annoying in the process. Good enough that it becomes memorable and inseparable from the game it appears on. Tetris has great music. Mario in most forms has had great music. Yoshi's Island has some of my favorite video game music, especially the parts where Yoshi is in a cave of some sort. Zelda on NES, and the list goes on. Something similar is probably the Looney Tunes / Merrie Melodies approach to using classical music in their cartoons. |
I just said I love you because girls that dig video games are fuckin' tight.
|
Quote:
I dig what you have to say about video game music. The definitive mario song is as definitive as music gets. It's surely something to be respected. I'm pretty sure the merry melodies thing had a lot to do with no royalties. |
Buy the Guitar Hero! A real guitar will only lead to false hopes and dreams!

I love that game!!! |
What about gays who play real guitars? Are we hot or not?

The girl has taste. One of my favourite pieces ev0r videogame-wise is the looped melody at the start of the Zelda games on the title screen. I think the OoT version is the best incarnation. I got hold of the soundtrack CDs for OoT and MM and a couple of orchestrations. Yeah, I'm a Nintendo fanboy but the music itself is righteous. Particularly, as lux pointed out, considering that in the 8-bit and 16-bit eras they really were working within pretty tight boundaries. Even on the '64 they were, actually. |
Don't waste your time and money on all that game shit.
|

Yeah, get one of these instead: ![]() Just think of how many different ways you could play "Old McDonald Had a Farm" on that monster. |

im left handed but play guitar right handed, couldnt be fucked restringing when i started |

twice castrated in a single week?? DOOOOOOOOCTOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!! -- go return that wooden piece of acoustic hippie shit & get yr drumset, foo... go before it's too goddamn late. |
Look at it this way, a real guitar has potential to get you more money and fame etc. Guitar Hero Two will give you hand cramps and a repetitive stress injury.
|
you can get a guitar and compose videogame music with it...or get yourself a nice tv and a nes or snes and a bunch of games.

You see what I mean about false hopes and dreams? |
fuck glory, fuck fame, fuck all that shit
agh, the point is to have fun, to have fun, that is all, that is all... ! DRUMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rOCa-qgbtc which continues here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_fwcFjzyik and here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd4NDf7ciK4 and as a bonus (not for vegetarians, and a bit dorky, but whateva)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hngmb0pTcMY plus, my current hero (sorry, crappy sound in the 1st one but... is he having fun??? eeehhhh??) ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si3iSzgRr4A http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS7XwOecqes |

.....wow you know how to hurt a guy. :p what if I don't plan on playing hippie shit? drums are too loud for my house unfortunately, and there's just nowhere to put them! the invisible ones only brought me threats of violence, the real ones might bring the real thing. and yeah, I don't want to be cool or hot or anything really. I just want to have fun! granted....becoming a genius at guitar hero WILL make me cool with my friends, whereas I will never be impressive enough with a real one. if I play my cards right, maybe I can just get both. PS: I'll watch the youtube when I get home (no soundcard). |
dont get a video game, its just a waste.
|

oh, sorry man. well if you want the electric guitar then get the electic guitar at least, no? they are really 2 different instruments. one is like a plectrum, the other is a dinosaur of xx century technology. go with dinosaurs! im telling you, i have an acoustic, and i cannot do this to it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WInKHEhRrvM |

don't EVER apologize for calling someone out on hippie shit. if the world had more people like you, and less bumblebees, it would be a happier (less smelly) place. I think I've been pretty much convinced to get an accoustic. after I teach myself how to play the entire Sparklehorse discography, I plan on finding new ways to make the accoustic guitar into the punk rawk instrument of doom that it was born to be. |
