your top 5 EPs

A little harder maybe? My list sort of resembles my top 5 albums but oh well.

Pavement - Watery, Domestic
12RODS - gay?
Sonic Youth - 100% (single)
Matthew Good Band - Loser Anthems
Grandaddy- Signal to Snow Ratio

Rob Instigator 04.18.2007 01:45 PM

hmmm

Polvo - Celebrate The New Dark Age
Dinosaur Jr - Whatever's cool with me
Dinosaur Jr - fossils
Archers of Loaf - VS The Greatest of all time
Polvo - This Eclipse

fluxequalsrad 04.18.2007 01:50 PM

I should listen to Polvo

king_buzzo 04.18.2007 02:13 PM

Polvo is cool.

MellySingsDoom 04.18.2007 02:26 PM

Dead C - Dead C vs Sebadoh
Swans - Raping A Slave
Big Black - Headache
Loop - Collision
Harry Pussy - the 7" EP with the girl holding a frog.

SonicSam 04.18.2007 03:13 PM

polvo is very cool. No one here would care what my top 5 EPs are.

gmku 04.18.2007 03:18 PM

It is harder because I probably don't own more than 5 EPs.

what are your top 5 EP's?

Savage Clone 04.18.2007 04:04 PM

Birdmen Of Alkatraz - Glidin' Off
Loop - Prisma Uber Europa
Nurse With Wound - Cooloorta Moon
Kendra Smith - The Guild Of Temporal Adventurers
Andreas Martin - Doppelpunkt Vor Ort

the ikara cult 04.18.2007 04:19 PM

Les Savy Fav - Rome/Emor
Pavement - Watery Domestic
Idlewild - Captain (sentimental reasons)

obviously not a top 5 but those are some im fond of

I feel the 5 song EP is the way most albums should have always been, its very rare that you hear an album and think that you couldnt appreciate it if it wasnt 12 tracks.

Cardinal Rob 04.18.2007 04:24 PM

Polvo are dull, dull, dull.

Bertrand 04.18.2007 04:37 PM

Sonic Youth - Kill Yr Idols
The Nerves - The Nerves (1976 EP - I don't own it, I can't find it, I downloaded it, mp3 is shit, I want it)
The Cramps - Can Your Pussy Do the Dog? (great cover)
Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - The Natural Finger (on Ajax)
that'll be all

DJ Rick 04.18.2007 05:06 PM

Bobby Soxx "Learn to Hate in the 80's" b/w "Scavenger of Death"
Red Asphalt "R/A"
Drunks With Guns "Punched in the Head"
Crash Normal "Normal"
The Hospitals "Rich People"

Hip Priest 04.18.2007 05:19 PM

The Baby Men - For King Willy

Frankfurter - Eat
David Sylvian - Words With The Shaman
Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy
Piratio - Room Tones

ricechex 04.18.2007 05:23 PM

Good call with Polvo. Celebrate and This Eclipse are excellent. I would throw in Archers Vs Greatest of All Time. I love eps. nowadays all bands should put out eps only b/c,on the whole, no one is good enough for a full length.

Actually, it just seems that way because everyone has ADD now.

Hip Priest 04.18.2007 05:28 PM

Back in the day, before the advent of cds, an album was often only 40-50 minutes long, with maybe eight or nine tracks. With cds you get much more space to fill, so it's hardly surprising that some bands struggle.

Savage Clone 04.18.2007 05:31 PM

HP, I thought for sure you would be mentioning Propaganda in this thread.
(Happy belated birthday, by the way)

Hip Priest 04.18.2007 05:34 PM

Did Propaganda do any EPs? I've probably forgotten something really good by someone.

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

1. Kill Yr Idols
2. Tremolo
3. Come On Pilgrim
4. Feed Me With Your Kiss
5. Tremulant

Hip Priest 04.18.2007 05:39 PM

Does that count as an EP? I kind of thought EPs had to have more than two tracks or something. But I'm happy to put Propaganda's 'Duel/Jewel' 12" masterpiece in second place on the list:

The Baby Men - For King Willy

Propaganda - Duel/Jewel
Frankfurter - Eat
David Sylvian - Words With The Shaman
Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy

Savage Clone 04.18.2007 05:41 PM

I say if it's on a 12", it's an EP.
I cheated on that last one, as it was a 7" 45.

Hip Priest 04.18.2007 05:44 PM

It is indeed.

The Baby Men's astonishing 'For King Willy' EP (or as much as my scanner would fit):

And the great Propaganda 12":

LittlePuppetBoy 04.18.2007 07:18 PM

Meat Puppets-In a Car
Mission of Burma-Signals, Calls and Marches
Black Flag-Six Pack
Black Flag-Nervous Breakdown
Pavement-Watery Domestic

Everyneurotic 04.18.2007 07:54 PM

fack, let's see:

*black flag - jealous again
*yellow swans - drift
*boredoms - super roots 3
*metallica - garage days revisited
*white magic - through the sun door

atari 2600 04.18.2007 10:30 PM

EDIT:

pretty much all the Sonic Youth eps
all the Fall, all The Beatles, All of MBV's, all of Gang of Four's, all of Duran Duran's singles and remixes, all of Pavement's singles, some of Boredoms, etc...

Top 5 w/o repeats:

1 R.E.M. - Chronic Town
2 The Beatles - Lady Madonna/The Inner Light
3 Sonic Youth - Dirty Boots
4 Chickasaw Mudd Puppies - White Dirt
5 Duran Duran - Planet Earth

various others:
Metallica - Garage Days Revisited
The Beatles - Hey Bulldog
John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Two Virgins
John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Life With The Lions
Pavement - Watery, Domestic
Butthole Surfers - Widowermaker
The Pixies - Come on Pilgrim
My Bloody Valentine - You Made Me Realise
My Bloody Valentine - Fee Me With Your Kiss
Gang of Four - Love Like Anthrax
Fugazi - Margin Walker

EP once meant something more tangible, back in 7" only days. Nowadays, it's an EP only if it has "EP" on the cover, I suppose.

fluxequalsrad 04.18.2007 11:06 PM

Hey what does everyone think of Yo la Tengo EPs? I've never heard any... isn't one called Danelectro?

liimanarina - maailman tylsin vittumaisuus

dead kennedys - in god we trust inc

The Jesus Lizard - Pure

screamingskull 04.19.2007 07:41 AM

Extended play (EP) is the name typically given to vinyl records or CDs which contain more than one single but are too short to qualify as albums.

and not to be confused with mini-albums...

usually 12"EP's were 45rpm and mini-albums 33rpm but for some reason many U.S. ep's play at 33rpm.
