Ten songs about nuclear war.
Teapacks' controversial 'Push the Button, Israel's entry into the 2007 Eurovision song contest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AI_S0...eature=related
Cheers. |
All this talk about Wilco lately. So, the first thing in my head is the Uncle Tupelo cover of Atomic Power.
|
Sorry, I had to pick ten from an extensive list. Perhaps you could do a second poll?
|
Oh, oooops. I thought you just wanted people to yell some out.
I've always thought of Can's Mushroom from Tago Mago as being about nuclear war. I don't know. |
hip priest, nuclear war is actually a sun-ra cover.
hm... i like cities in dust by siouxie & the banshees. its reportedly about pompeii but that's too strong a metaphor to be ignored no? watch it before its'taken down! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLP35SNOSDY -- i'll vote for nuclear was as i own the ep & its great (almost all, i dont like the little children chorus, though it has a point) |

Yell out as many as you wish. It's probably better if you type them though, as I'm quite far away from you. There's a list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ut_nuclear_war |

Gah! Fucky wikipedia! Oh well, vote for whichever you wish. Thanks for the link. |
wikipedia is the world's new brain lobe :D
|
It is all-pervading. And it's certainly handy for 'list of songs about...' searches.
|
I have to admit I don't know most of those, but I can say, as one who served in the Air Force in W. Germany in the 1980s, that there is just something about the Nena song that so embodies that part of the Cold War. Seriously.
|
I voted for YLTs Nuclear War but I know you really meant Sun Ra so that's OK.
|
I think Breathing by Kate Bush could've been on the list too.
|
I don't know many of the songs, but Charles Mingus is my favourite artist out of those listed.
So he gets my vote. |
"I was born .dadadaad.. in a bomb.... dadadaad"
I canīt remember, who did that song? |
What about "We have a bigger problem now" by Dead Kennedys.
Gang of Four shit, too? |
Forgot "Party at Ground Zero" from Fishbone

oh yeah i would vote mingus too but i havent actually HEARD that so i thought it would be cheating a little bit. |
I picked '99 Luftballons' by Nena, simply because the german version is one of my favorite pop songs ever.

Perhaps favorite German pop song. Also, there are numerous cover versions that make this song most enjoyable. |
Off that list I voted for "World Destruction", but if the Sun Ra version of "Nuclear War" were there I'd go that way for sure. I like the Yo La Tengo version o.k., especially the Mike Ladd remix, but the original is the stroke of genius.
Thank you for not putting any Roger Waters songs on the list! |
scissor shock - what the world needs right now is peace, love, and jazz noise
scissor shock - thermonuclear puree ruinhorse - meltdown boogie |
the weirdos - we got the neutron bomb
|
where's duran "easy as a nuclear war" duran?
i never knew what 99 luftballoons was about, but i just bought that lp last weekend. had to vote for einstein a-go go, one of the greatest ever, also enola gay is just as good. |
Nuclear war? Yeeeah
Nuclear war? Yeeeah Talkin about? Yeeeah Nuclear war? Yeeeah But it's a motherfucker, don't you know, if they push that button your ass gotta go! |
"Everyday is like Sunday" by the Moz. Not so much about nuclear war, but about wishing for nuclear war. Still...
|
"What Goes Around...Comes Around" By Justin Timberlake.
How clever to disguise a song about the nuclear holocaust as a sappy pop song about a lover wronged. |
it's on (ugh) Dirty Work
Back to Zero (m. jagger/k. richards) Back to zero So you wanna blow us all to pieces Go meet your maker, head hung down And give him all your explanations Go ahead, throw down Back to zero, back to nothing Straight to meltdown, back to zero That’s where we’re heading It’s a monkey living on my back I can feel my spine begin to crack I’m looking to the future I keep on glancing back I prefer to rot I don’t want to pop I think I’ll head back to the jungle, alright Don’t want to see no big bad rumble, Back to zero, that’s where we’re going Back to nothing, right now, right now No heroes? no more heroes Back to meltdown That’s where I’m going, back to zero My whole life is hanging on a thread I’m the fly inside the spider’s web I’m looking to the future I keep on glancing back I prefer to rot I don’t want to pop I worry about my great-grandchildren Living ten miles beneath the ground I worry about their whole existence The whole damn thing’s in doubt Back to zero, that’s where we’re going Back to nothing, that’s where we’re heading Straight to meltdown, that’s where we’re going Back to zero, right now, right now We’re going nowhere Right now, right now Back to zero, that’s where we’re heading Back to zero |
"Two Tribes" by (ugh) Frankie Goes to Hollywood too...about the "cold war" as well, I suppose.
|
obviously nena takes this but may i just say how great a thread title this is.
