Torn Curtain 05.15.2007 01:37 PM

I don't know if they're good but Pitchfork gave them a 9.1 today:

Toxa 05.15.2007 03:14 PM

they are amazing.

Everyneurotic 05.15.2007 03:23 PM

yes, really good album.

nicfit 05.15.2007 03:44 PM

And amazing live band too, judging by the one and only live i heard.

atsonicpark 05.15.2007 03:45 PM

it's obviously good, everyone loves it, some of the pitch shifted vocal things feel a bit gimmicky and i prefer their ep's. but t's good.

schizophrenicroom 05.15.2007 04:09 PM

love it

seeing them live in june

Everyneurotic 05.15.2007 04:13 PM

at first, i didn't like the vocal effects and thought they ruined the album, but now i enjoy them and feel they are an important part of the sound of the record.

the eps, as much as i like them, feel really dated now for me, it's been more than a year since i played any one of them. frankly, i prefer don caballero to the eps.

_slavo_ 05.16.2007 02:32 AM

I love both EPs and the album as well. I think this band is truly genuine.

jimbrim 05.16.2007 04:17 AM

After i listened to the album for the first time, i didnt quite get it. i thought Braxton's vocal's seemed rather anoying. Now i've played it a few times ive grown to love it, but i agree its a huge progression from their first two EP's.

PAULYBEE2656 05.16.2007 06:00 AM

album of the decade!!!
awesome album. love every little last bit of it. its been a long time since an album blew me away like this one did.......and they are playing dublin in 9 days.....

"music to dance and chin stroke too..."- mojo

ALIEN ANAL 05.16.2007 06:08 AM

Now, that is a good reason to stop listening to their records :p :D

Massassinated 05.22.2007 11:24 AM

Very good album, one of the best releases in 2007 so far.

i didn't know whether to laugh or laugh hysterically.

i kinda wanted to play the indie snob card "you know, i've known them for 3 years now"

PAULYBEE2656 05.25.2007 07:55 AM

via myspace.....
i sent rhys chatham a message commenting on the wire interview and also sent him the atlas live vid. he replied in a huge message commenting on it and unaware who they were but still went out bought the album an thanked me for introducing him to em. i was gobsmacked to be honest... such a nice man.... true story!

PAULYBEE2656 05.25.2007 07:56 AM

he was also amazed that anthony braxtons son is in the band, he didnt even know he had a son, let alone a mid 20 yr old!

yes, he is.

he's chums with a post rock band from here who he met on myspace and even name dropped them on the wire.

SonicSam 05.25.2007 09:08 AM

I didnt get this cos a few people i know said it was rubbish, you lot may have changed my mind :)
I still prefer Don Cab though.

Everyneurotic 05.25.2007 09:13 AM

on mirrored, they finally step out of don cab's shadow, musically speaking.

there's one thing happening though, there's a backlash going on.

The whole album is now up on their myspace page. And mighty fine it is too.
I prefer the album to the eps also. As previously mentioned they really sound dated against the more recent stuff.

I don't understand what you mean here

Everyneurotic 05.25.2007 09:33 AM

well, not huge (i edited that part out), but a lot of people now think of them as poppy indie rock designed for hipsters because most hipsters have embraced mirrored and, because of that, a lot of people think they are ironic, fashion concious, retro ripping off know it alls on par with the arctic monkeys and what have you.

which is very stupid, of course.

nicfit 05.25.2007 09:36 AM

Ah, now I understand.
Mbah, methinks that most of the people sayin' that couldn't list/hear half of the different sounds that you can hear in many parts of "mirrored". Just check that frickin' live at the empty bottle vid, they're an organic machine..

_slavo_ 05.25.2007 09:49 AM

I wish I saw them live...at least onceeeeeeeeeeeee !!

deathbyfeedback 05.25.2007 12:03 PM

the soundguy at the manchester gig fucking ruined it. ian williams was far too loud and ty was far too quiet.

i wanted to fucking stab the guy.

ALIEN ANAL 05.25.2007 12:17 PM

man, i hate all this "its coool now to like a band" shit, i just want to enjoy music and not have to have my ear chewed off by some cock face that has to tell me whats cool or not..Battles makes rad music that i can groove to and makes me happy FULL STOP!

PAULYBEE2656 05.25.2007 12:35 PM

a few reviews put them perfectly

mojo- "music for dancers and chin strokers"
the wire- "shitkicking geeks"

they are playing tonite in dublin and im already commited to doing a dj slot down here with a local band. im fucking pissed off cuz i had 2 free places onth door.least im getting a battles tee out of it!!!

atari 2600 05.25.2007 02:48 PM

Battles are coming 6/13; Animal Collective will be here 5/30.

Torn Curtain 08.14.2007 03:45 AM

Am I the only one who doesn't like Battles ? :o

_slavo_ 08.14.2007 03:59 AM

yes, you probably are.

Go stand in the corner.

No you're not, but you can't see me, I'm standind in the opposite corner.
I like the first two songs then can't go much farther.
I saw them two days ago at a festival.
The machine part of it is a cause for my not appreciating the whole thing that much.
Stanier is impressive, but his pals spend so much time adjusting this and that that I had the feeling they could have checked their emails during the show. It was as if they were saying, wait a minute, it's good now, but see what it's gonna be in a minute once I've done this invisible-to-you thing.
A fan (already seen them 4 times) said the voice puzzled him, as if it was smurfs singing along. I found it funny, but that's the voice, or the fact there's some singing that I liked the most, as there was some connection with the audience. Which has importance to me.
This said, treating sound the way they do is something I can understand if can't relate to the result.

SynthethicalY 08.14.2007 05:40 AM

The effects on the voice, annoy me. I don't think I can go further. But the music is badass, too bad they ruined it with the voice effects. I think I will now go listen to Dinosaur Jr.

edit- but don't hold me to that. I will eventually get to them.

purplebumblebee 08.14.2007 08:33 AM

Saw them play live a few months ago. They were really intense at first,
then got a little repetative, then came together in the end. Still a great gig though. Loved the tall cymbal!

Everyneurotic 08.14.2007 12:09 PM

my editor hates them.
