Which Sonic Youth Album should I get next?
Um, Hello. This is my first post here but I just recently started listening to Sonic Youth. I pretty much like all types of music and I just bought some of their albums yesterday, The ones I got were:
Sister Daydream Nation Goo Dirty Murray Street Rather Ripped I have enjoyed everythig I have heard by them so far and I was wondering if someone could reccomend another good one. My favorite 2 of the 6 I have so far are "Sister" and "Murray Street". |
EVOL and Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star.
|
To complete Danny's post, I 'd say Bad Moon Rising.
|
Washing Machine
|
Anyway, you've got most of the masterpieces of the band. And Sister is my favourite, too. Good choice, my friend.
|
Seconded, thirded: Sister is wonderful.
Runners up: EVOL Confusion is Sex Sonic Nurse Washing Machine |
a thousand leaves
|
a logical next step would probably be Washing Machine. then again, there is no logic to Sonic Youth.:D
|
confusion is sex and/or syr4
|
I think confusion is Sex is maybe too difficult for a beginner, except for a No wave or Harcore fan. It's rough. It's not for the kids.
|
but it's also one of their very best, so don't skim on the good stuff.
besides, if you can't get into cis or syr4, they you can't really like sonic youth. |
I don't mean it's a bad one, I really love it, but if the guy wants to go progressivly, maybe he should try to listen to other stuffs before, like Bad Moon Rising.
Yeah, Confusion is a masterpiece, songs like Bad Mood, World looks red... are fucking great. It made a profond impression on me the first time I 've listened to it. |
I'd go with confusion is sex or EVOL - i say it ups the concentration levels but not too much..... I didnt understand confusion is sex for a long while but it really is the bees knees - and EVOL is fucking classic
|
Get the self-titled debut EP!
Evol, Washing Machine and Sonic Nurse are all great ideas as well. |

i don't like SYR4 at all. as for what to get next, avoid EJST&NS. i'd go with Sonic Nurse or EVOL. |
EVOL, but I have to mention the first SY album I loved was CIS, I thought the others were too quiet for the longest time.
|
Bad Moon Rising is my favorite, but I'd recommend you to buy EVOL if you loved Sister

Bad Moon Rising is my all time favorite. However, given the two you mention being your favorites, you should probably grab Washing Machine, which is definitely along the same lines in terms of more melodic and pop frameworks for the noise. EVOL was also the first record to set that direction and Sister was reputedly titled as a "sister album" to it (they came out in a 1 year period.) |

I don't think that's true at all. Mind, those are two of my very favorite albums, and I LOVE that aspect of the band. However, if somebody just gets into the melodic pop side of the group, that's still Sonic Youth they are liking. I'm sure the band would feel that way. |
first evol and washing machine
and then confusion in sex and bad moon rising |
just don't ever buy dirty.
oh wait.. you did. well.. uh.. anything is better than that piece of shit, so.. |

Ho yeah, and TV Shit, too |

That's the great thing about SY, everyone has their favourite album(s), and ones they don't like, which then other people feel are their favourites. Personally I've never liked Murray Street so much, and any other album between A thousand Leaves and Rather Ripped. Anyway, what to buy next? I would say Washing Machine, Evol, the self-titled EP, A Thousand Leaves. And SYR1, and Silver Sessions if you want to scare the neighbours. It depends on what you're general taste is, if you're more into experimental freejazz avantgarde etc then go get SYR4 and the oldest albums like Confusion and Bad Moon Rising. If you're not into that kind of music so much (like me), then I wouldn't recommend them. |
^ Right
Dirty doesn't stand up next to GOO (which is probably one of my top 3)... but it does have some great stuff on it. |
Evol Evol Evol.
Sonic Nurse Sonic Nurse. |

Yes, and to add to this, EVOL and Bad Moon Rising. And ofcourse, the legendary Confusion is Sex. |
EVOL then Washing Machine
|
EVOL is fucking essencial. Perhaps my second or third favourite SY album after Bad Moon Rising. So I say EVOL and Bad Moon followed by Washing Machine.
|
my favorite sonic youth album is silver sessions.

you said it right. |
So many great memories of driving round the mountains and woods at 4am with my friends listening to EVOL through a shitty radio.
"I left home for experience, carved suk for honesty on my chest" |
to follow sister and murray street, just try the whitey album (ciccone youth) otherwise : EXPERIMENTAL JET SET TRASH AND NO STAR and WASHING MACHINE.
|
I never liked 'Sister' until a few weeks ago...
|
I'd say EVOL and then Confusion Is Sex.
|
I think that the general consensus, combined with my own bias is EVOL and Washing Machine. You definitely will not be disappointed with those two. If you are, leave and never come back!! ;) j/k
|
Evol and Sonic Nurse aren't mentioned enough. Get Bad moon rising also.
And Washing machine. And SYR4. In fact get everything. except EJSNS which is crappy minus 3 songs. I know it's not a common opinion but I find their earlier stuff not as genuinely challenging as stuff they did after BMR. It's supposed to be raw and unconventional, but they didn't know their shit yet if u ask me. Buy CIS and KYI last (90% of the fans will tell you the contrary though cuz they read too many music reviews ;) ). |
I think you should get A Thousand Leves & Nyc Ghost And Flowers.
Then Confusion Is Sex. |
Quote:
Yes, nyc ghosts & flowers is a great album i was wondering why nobody has mentioned it before |
Washing Machine!!!!!!!!!!!
