attn cinephiles: recommend me something for my greencine queue!
Finally rejoined the ranks of the initiated; now all I need is to start building up my queue. I had such a nice one back in the day-- i had all of Kurosawa, and was working my way through it!
But anyway, life starts again; I remember hearing about this guy from India just the other day, but I'm too lazy to search the forum. Someone Kurosawa worshipped. So-- please give me some nice movie titles I've never seen. Yes, you can read my mind for this purpose. I want cult, historical, obscure, must-see, and definitely not mainstream Hollywood. Gracias. |
they live (john carpenter 1988)
prince of darkness (john carpenter 1987) |

cinephiles:eek: yay!
I wonder what people would think if I wrote that DDN was probably a good album, but that I just don't know because I've never heard it. Drugstore Cowboy came out way back in 1989. |

maya deren! of course... thank you. bergman i had already ordered the fanny & alexander tv version, but now i just added this early bergman box set to the list. thanks! eisenstein-- i love everything by him, know him well, except for ivan the terrible! which i've just ordered! thanks. Quote:
ha ha, are you acting funny again? i 've added drugstore cowboy, which is my missing van sant movie that is not affleck crap. thanks. |

oh, awesome! i'll do better than that-- i'll put all of seijun suzuki's movies in my queue & watch them chronologically. hurray! i looooooove greencine. i do. |

Seconded. Although if you haven't seen any Suzuki before I'd recommend Branded to Kill and Tokyo Drifter of Youth of the Beast. Although all 3 are ace. Branded is interesting if you've seen Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai because you will be able to spot a few bits that Jimmy Jarmusch paid 'homage' to (ie ripped off). Also, if you haven't seen any Teshigahara then I'd remedy that. Not sure which ones are available in R1 yet...I think Criterion is doing, or has just done a box set. Anyway, Woman of the Dunes, Pitfall and Face of Another are all essential viewing. And it goes without saying but if there is any Herzog you haven't got round to seeing then it would worth rectifying that. Especially if you haven't seen Aguirre, Fitzcarraldo, Strozek, Even Dwarves Started Small or Fata Morgana. |
Ack...didn't read you post about putting all of Suzukis films in your queue...apologies and kudos, because that is a fabulous idea.
|
awesome-- yes i love herzog, i've seen fitzcarraldo & aguirre & kaspar hauser but not strozek i think... i'm going to do a chronological series as well.
i feel like a pig, stuffing myself, ha ha ha. |
Strozek is a must see. Arguably his best...certainly up there with his best and one of the best endings in cinema. Lux will back me up on this one.

hey, guess what's coming in my 1st batch of DVDs?? FANDO & LIS!!! oh yes im going to see all of jodorowsky, in order. ive seen 1/2 of your list but not the other. ill check it out-- sounds bizarre enough :D ps i made a vhs rip of tetsuo long ago. i love that movie. |
Just saw Fando y lis for the first time the other day. wonderful.
|
If you love Tetsuo then a) You should check out Shinya Tsukamotos other films. Not sure which are available in the US but Bullet Ballet, Tokyo Fist, Gemini and A Snake of June are all great.
b)You would probably get a fair amount of mileage out of Pinnochio 964 and Rubbers Lover as suggested by Adam. Also, I imagine the same goes for Electric Dragon 80,000v. I haven't seen it but it's on my 'to watch' list for sure. |
the score
