DDN reissue sound. How's it?

Question to all the lucky people who already bought+listened, how do the remastered tracks sound? My comparison is the geffen cd, and that is near-awful sounding, so i guess and hope there's a BIG improvement.
Any opinions?
And it would be interesting to hear comments from guys who have the older (pre-geffen) cd edition and/or the vinyl too.
Thanks.

It's cool, man. It's like 'Boom! Boom! Boom!' but a lot of bigger. I dunno, man, I think it's all relative and that shit, man. I wanna hear some more, and all that.

p.s. I'd like to add that I don't care much about "official" reviews, I'd like to hear " true fans' " comments on this subject.

Why don't you want to hear the opinions of gals who have the pre-Geffen or vinyl editions?

Can women not be true fans too?

Anyway, I have nothing to say about the deluxe edition, because it's not out in the UK for another three frigging weeks!

atsonicpark 06.13.2007 07:08 AM

i hear it's LOUD

neptuneg 06.13.2007 04:31 PM

some of these live songs are awesome. i'm having difficulty figuring out which shows some of them came from.

they are listed in the booklet

pantophobia 06.13.2007 04:40 PM

and oh yeah i find it clearer then the geffen disc, would have to listen a few more times to really get a bearing on it, but yeah it is better

youthoftomorrow 06.13.2007 04:41 PM

it sounds great. i don't really know how to articulate what about it sounds better, but it does. on some of the songs, you can make out the individual guitar parts much more easily.

and the live stuff is great.

scott v 06.13.2007 05:11 PM

ok i have the 3 editions that are being asked about for comparison (1. Blast First/Enigma original cd 2. DGC reissue 1995 3. Deluxe Edition)

the Blast First original cd is the most quiet mostly because of the production and mastering of cds at that time, in the late 80's the cds were made were less loud and the fidelity is not as good as the standards of today.

the DGC reissue is louder and to my ears thats about it, its supposedly a remaster? (i dunno) but other than louder its not any clearer as a matter of fact when i played it in my stereo system (though not great but its very good) it has abit less clarity however it has slightly more bass presence which may impact on the sound.

the deluxe edition is indeed LOUD and meets the volume level of compact disc releases of today (as an experiment try playing cds produced today vs. 10 years ago vs. 15 or 20 years ago... there is a difference) plus its quite clean w/ a alot more clarity on the guitars, the vocals i always thought were good on this album so i don't hear much impact in that regard. the bass is more pronounced but doesn't impact clarity... plus they've broken down the "Trilogy" into three seperate tracks (a. wonder, b. hyperstation, z. eliminator jr.) which is a nice thing if you say want to make a mix or are DJing and only want to play a specific segment of it!

the eric's trip demo: although interesting the sound quality is a miss and seems abit awkward as an inclusion to Disc 1 (the complete album) personally i would've prefered "Su Nioj" an outtake from the Daydream Sessions but since that track is pretty weird and off the cuff and just what i call a "laugh jam" thats probably why it doesn't appear here.

Disc 2 is great most of the live tracks here sound quite good and are decent for the time, maybe the fidelity of kissability is obviously not as good as most of the others, as ther are some great and interesting takes of these songs, also providence is barely audible due to crowd noise but what do you expect. the B-sides to me are interesting but not exactly essential though they are very well done...

"The Best Kept Secret" part of the booklet was written by a guy from my town. crazy!

how do you pronounce Chappaqua anyhow?

neptuneg 06.13.2007 11:31 PM

chahh-puh-kwa

atsonicpark 06.14.2007 01:59 AM

you know, i never really thought about it, but cd's really were quieter years ago compared to now.

such an obvious thing, but it never crossed my mind until just this very moment. :|

nicfit 06.14.2007 02:43 AM

Thanks guys, really interesting post scott v, I never liked how the geffen reissue sounds, now I'm looking forward to have this new one in my stereo.

Moshe 06.14.2007 02:50 AM

Thanks scott v.

deathbyfeedback 06.14.2007 06:20 AM

they've still not sorted the drums.

nicfit 06.14.2007 06:24 AM

Do drums sound bad :( :( ???

deathbyfeedback 06.14.2007 07:26 AM

very slightly better than on the original. worst snare sound = DDN.

HECKLER SPRAY 06.14.2007 08:13 AM

Yeah, agreed.
It doesn't pay tribute to Steve's drums playing.
Compared to Sister drums sound, it's weak.

fluxequalsrad 06.14.2007 08:15 AM

the snare on DDN is wretched. It turned me off from the album for a long time. The busy rolls on "Silver Rocket" just sound silly with that snare.

gleeman 06.14.2007 12:00 PM

Yep, its loud allright. But not much else.

I still have the Blast First vinyl copy I bought in college 15 years ago. Compared to the new remaster, the guitars are way more in your face and present, and the drums crackle and pop. The tambourine on the bridge of Eric's Trip just leaps out from the speakers and sits in your lap on the LP but on the CD it seems tamed and way back in the mix. Yeah the LP is much quieter than the CD but hey I still have a volume knob on my amplifier. Turn it up and the LP is just as loud. And better!

Danny Himself 06.14.2007 01:32 PM

I went out to buy this today but the two record stores I went to didn't have it. I am so disappointed.

nicfit 06.14.2007 02:34 PM

I like the remaster much more than the Geffen reissue. Guitars are much cleaner.

The remaster is also better for mp3s (as stated in the p4k article).

My record player is not hooked up at the moment, so i can't compare it to the vinyl.

the ikara cult 06.15.2007 06:45 PM

The opinions on the sound are making me want to get the reissue, just cos ive always felt the CD version i have (its the Geffen) lacked a certain something production wise, which i managed to kinda ignore over time.
