Writing greatness out of history
What are those bands that you felt made a great contribution to 'alternative' music but which seem to have been almost entirely written out of its history?
Loop spring immediately to mind as an example of a great band that now seem to have no recognition whatsoever beyond that of a few myspace enthusiasts and a couple of posters here. |
Joe Meek
Loop Delia Derbyshire Fela Kuti I don't think George Clinton gets the amount of respect that he deserves Dionne Warwick The Shangri La's Broadcast Sensational etc etc ect ect ect etc etc |
Head of David are another band that seem to receive almost NO mention.

I thought he was revered enough.. |
Not enough as he deserves. As a musician alone, it would be good if he was more influential.

Radio Birdman
Suicide Commandos The Fall Glen Branca Hellhammer |

Totally. At the expence of practically any other funk musician. If there's onr guy that most definitely HASN'T been written out of musicazl history it's him. |

I'm starting to think that my point has been well and truly missed. |
I don't see George Clinton being mentioned all the time as, say, Dinosaur Jr. That was my little stab at happiness, I suppose. The Fall? No way, if anything I skip anything that's written about them if I can, now. They have become the Aphex Twin of numerous mentions. Radio Birdman or The Scientists, I totally agree, but not The Fall.

Maybe if this was a Bootsy Collins fanforum or even some sort of funk hangout you'd hear his name more- this forum is about 50% fuzz children. Oh, and nice Lee reference. |

Then again, they were a pile of pants. |

I forgot that 'black music' should know its place. |

Hmm, now that I come to think about it... |

Ok, so maybe the Fall gets SOME recognition. However, as influential as they have been to the history of "alternative" music, I would say that they warrant a bit more attention. I don't think being on the cover of The Wire close to thirty years after the fact exactly constitutes fame and stardom. I'm not even a fan of The Fall. I do see a lot of direct and indirect influence on "alternative" music from the 80's to the present that isn't generally recognized as something derived/inspired by Smith & company. |

I didn't mean it like that, and you know it. In a forum that is over 75% white, almost 100% indie-bitch and about 50% below the age of 20, you couldn't expect to find many enthusiasts of classic funk, could you? You're way more likely to find fans of Dinosaur here, thats all I was saying. |

Sure, but being underrated is one thing, being written out of history quite another. |

Yes you did. Your posts recently are obviously fueled by your current BNP sympathies. |

Round here, I entirely agree with you. Luckily, in the real world, I know some actual people who listen to actual music that you can actually dance to. Maybe Sensational and Delia I would agree with. I'd like to add my ten pence of Urusei Yatsura, Stony Sleep and Prolapse. But that's probably more from my teenage years than anything else. |
Tha Fall are HUGE an everyone admits it, just like the stooges, or theMC5 or the new york dolls.
OVERLOOKED bands, bands that I feel are overlooked as to their influence on the indie rock, are someone already said radio birdman SEAM Pylon |
The Triffids. I was going to say the Go-Betweens, but everyone KNOWS they've been ignored so it sort of defeats the point. They're FAMOUS for being unknown.

i love fela kuti, he always makes me happy, even when he is talking about nigerian oppression. i think the fugs should get more recognition, and all of the 60's garage rock that gets looked over because of all the hippies. like the thirteenth floor elevators and especially The Sonics. they are so unflippinbelivable, and yet, nobodyt in the real world seems to appreaciate them and their contribution to punk. and the monks too |
Tav Falco - he really should have the same level of kudos as The Cramps. Poor sod.

Racist. |
Pop Will Eat Itself - without whom no rock/rave crossover (perhaps)
And Head of David were not crap. |

Ahhh, fond memories of snakebite and black at full tilt. |
MC5 maybe?
|
I blame "cool"-hoarding hipsters for failing to tell others about great bands and, thus, cheating the bands out of their due attention. It's not that people don't look hard enough, it's that people don't share the wealth.
