Thurston Moore Talks Solo Album, Daydream Nation
"When we wrote [Daydream Nation], it was like, 'This will be great in the context of playing CBGBs,' or something. The thought was never, 'This would be great to be played at a festival in Spain or Japan."

atsonicpark 06.19.2007 09:31 AM

Omigawd They Can't Talk To My God Thurston They Gave His Masterpiece Nyc Ghoulz N Roses A 0 Fuck Bitchforkrk

sonicl 06.19.2007 09:52 AM

Aww, that haircutting bit on the vid is sooooo cute!

whorefrost 06.19.2007 09:56 AM

track 06 of Trees... is entitled American Coffin, I notice. Not the same piece as on the MCIAA split, presumably...

sonicl 06.19.2007 09:58 AM

Oh God. I hope not.

Moshe 06.19.2007 09:59 AM

release date: September, 18 2007.

whorefrost 06.19.2007 10:05 AM

yep

sonicl 06.19.2007 10:09 AM

Is that "yep" addressed to Moshe or to me?

whorefrost 06.19.2007 10:14 AM

Moshe. I really dig American Coffin.. not sure if it would work in the context of a 'total pop record' though and, as such, it is unlikely to be that track. Quite cool if it was though..

id like to be like that whem im 50.
the first song kinda reminds me on torquise boy.

Danny Himself 06.19.2007 06:37 PM

I'm annoyed, my quicktime is fucked so I only get the audio from that clip. Still very nice but I'd like to see Thurston having his haircut.

k-krack 06.19.2007 06:51 PM

Both these songs are fucking stellar, but has no one noticed the incredible similarity of the second song's intro to Peace Attack?

Danny Himself 06.19.2007 07:16 PM

Not until you mentioned it.

Youtubed, for those who want to view it without going to pitchfork every time.

Chris Lawrence 06.19.2007 08:13 PM

hey, good interview. probably the most fun i've had reading thurston's words in a long time.

the answer's already sorta buried in my site, but can anyone guess which daydream song he's referring to? (re: the last minute panic trying to figure out his tuning from videos -- i tried too!)

Candle?
I figure that's at least one he was talking about it being really hard to relearn... they never played it, correct?

Danny Himself 06.19.2007 08:33 PM

They've played Candle live before, I'm sure. Was it Rain King?

jennthebenn 06.19.2007 08:35 PM

rain king is my guess as well.

Shit, yeh, I meant Rain King.

pantophobia 06.19.2007 08:46 PM

judging by the most recent performance of it in, yeah rain king

neptuneg 06.19.2007 10:47 PM

I thought rain king as well. additionally, it was very seldom played

Chris Lawrence 06.20.2007 01:24 AM

everybody gets a gold star today!

SonikJesus 06.20.2007 01:55 AM

That's a really cool song. I also didn't know Mascis was helping out with the record. It sounds like this record is going to be really good.

king_buzzo 06.20.2007 02:23 AM

Heh that was awesome.

Jef Mertens 06.20.2007 02:53 AM

What i think will make the record so great is the strings (Samara) which give a new sound to Thurston's, his songcraft no doubt and the incorporation of Mascis, John Moloney, Christina Carter, Andrew 'gown' Macgregor and leslie Keffer (providing some noise for 'Off Work').
he has used that whole part of a scene into the album.

I haven't anticipated a record that much as this one. Thanx to kim for convincing Thurston to change the title to 'Trees Outside The Academy'!

scott v 06.20.2007 07:59 AM

They've played candle live when supporting EJST&NS in 93-ish and definitly during the Murray Street tour and they've brought it out of the bag several times lately... my guess is that its also Rain King, which was hardly played even when supporting Daydream Nation, that or perhaps The Sprawl or Hey Joni...

The new solo album should be good, the supporting cast makes sense for what Ecstatic Peace! is about, and having Christina Carter doing additional vocal duties is a huge plus i saw her and Tom as Charalambides last week and they were great Christina has one of best voice's i've heard live, period...

GrungeMonkey 06.20.2007 09:19 AM

The stuff about Mascis taking the odd shredd-ass solo in there sounds cool ...

Really looking forward to this, though, should be interesting. Will it be easy to get hold of, or will I need to pre-order it d'ya think?

I suppose it wouldn't be difficult to lay your hands on, distribution through Fontana/Universal I guess.

GrungeMonkey 06.20.2007 09:51 AM

Thats good.

hirsute_biped 06.20.2007 01:36 PM

yeeessssss! hey thurston, lets go boogie boarding!

RanaldoNecro 06.20.2007 05:59 PM

Interesting that Thurston uses the Bass POD. The grey thing on his lap at the beginning.
