what's your guitar tuned to?

I never really cared about tunings before.. so, I've basically been tuning to "whatever sounds cool" for the past few years.. lately, though, I've decided to experiment with other kinds of tunings and I've devised my favorite tuning to play in.. it's tuned half Drop-D tuning (because it's so stupidly fun to play!) and half of what Lee is tuned to in songs like Bull in the Heather, so it's..

any other ridiculous or cool tunings you tune to, post.. i'd also like to know polvo's tunings..

king_buzzo 06.21.2007 02:21 PM

1. Standard
2. #f#f#f#feb
3. dont even know but its fucking dischordant.

Savage Clone 06.21.2007 02:22 PM

Either reg'lar or DADGAD.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 06.21.2007 02:48 PM

right now im in standard. Trying to get better.
But most of the time Im in something else. cant remember any right now.

gmku 06.21.2007 02:50 PM

Standard.

I sometimes like a dropped D tuning (I use several) or open G.

soapbars 06.21.2007 02:50 PM

most of my guitars are in standard,

with the exceptions of:

jaguar copy:
C G D G A D

Yamaha Drop 6:
B E A D F# B

Primero Acoustic:
D G D G B D

Trasher02 06.21.2007 02:51 PM

Lately I've been playing a lot in standard.
If I like to play noisey stuff I just twist the tunings around.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 06.21.2007 02:57 PM

I posted this in another thread:
My latest find is D-A-D-F#-C#-E(L TO H)

Danny Himself 06.21.2007 03:06 PM

Jazzmaster: GBDGDG
Vox: DGBBEE
Others are in standard

GrungeMonkey 06.21.2007 03:17 PM

Usually standard, but sometimes I like a bit of:

D-A-A-A-A-E

Cardinal Rob 06.21.2007 03:24 PM

Standard. Extremely used to it and know how to play that out of tune if I wish to.

Sonic Youth 37 06.21.2007 03:35 PM

Usually standard or tuned down a half step all the way (Smashing Pumpkins tuning), and the Teisco is usually in a SY tuning

StevOK 06.21.2007 03:37 PM

I'm in standard now, I used to play in standard C (two whole steps down).
I'm trying to figure a way to play "Do You Believe In Rapture?" without having to restring my guitar.

el duderino 06.21.2007 05:30 PM

B F B E G# C B

Basically a seven string tuned like a six string in drop D, but the highest string one step below the second highest

Everyneurotic 06.21.2007 05:58 PM

standard
bffd#ac (i'm not crazy about this one)
c#ecefd

or the monosodic tuning:

ead(fucked up)(fucked up)(fucked up); basically it's standard tuning with the top three strings tuned randomly

ondskan 06.21.2007 05:58 PM

Strat: Mostly standard, sometimes CGDGCD
Les Paul '76: C F# A# D# G C
Tele: D A D G B E

neptuneg 06.21.2007 06:20 PM

CCEBGD

Norma J 06.21.2007 06:46 PM

Standard.

I've messed with alot of tunings over the years but these days I prefer to use standard tuning. It's more challenging.

Unfortunately I always start out on standard and end up on some out of tune bullshit from that until I find something interesting.

Nothing so interesting recently.

MellySingsDoom 06.22.2007 07:29 AM

Pretty much standard tuning these days. (Name dropping bit coming up) When I was in the Rhys Chatham 100 Guitars thingy, my guitar was restrung with each string being (i think) a .26, and each string was tuned to A. Not a new concept, of course, but certainly novel.

king_buzzo 06.22.2007 07:35 AM

i am going to tune mine today to F#F#F#F#C#F

MellySingsDoom 06.22.2007 07:38 AM

...don't you think you're overdoing it with that C?

king_buzzo 06.22.2007 07:40 AM

sorry actually its a C#

MellySingsDoom 06.22.2007 07:43 AM

Indeed it is. Apologies.

ALIEN ANAL 06.22.2007 07:50 AM

prob an out of tune standard!

Torn Curtain 06.22.2007 08:10 AM

Currently my folk guitar is in BEBEBE as in Nick Drake's From the morning (I love that song but it's hard to play...). I also like the CGCFGE of Place to be (much easier to play).

atsonicpark 06.22.2007 12:34 PM

didn't know you were in the rhys chatham thing, that rules!

finding nobody 06.22.2007 12:45 PM

Strat: standard
ovation: i twisted the strings till i like the sound
kay: open e
rogue: CGDGCD
ibenaz: open e tuned down two steps
random electric acoustic: ACCGG#C

Torn Curtain 06.22.2007 03:41 PM

I've just learnt to play "Wonderful one" by Page & Plant, the tuning is EEBEBE and it's great.

P.S: the thread should've been in the Non sonic sounds section.

atsonicpark 06.22.2007 05:24 PM

i thought "Non-sonic sounds" was for other bands, though..

jon boy 06.24.2007 10:55 AM

whats a tuning?

Green_mind 06.24.2007 06:49 PM

F#F#F#F#EB is an interesting tuning, I like that full sound you get with sliding around on the F#'s. I want to get one of those baritone acoustic guitars to play round with, I bet you can achieve some interesting sounds on one of those.

Of the ones not in standard, one is in PCH/Expressway tuning and the other in Low C (I was showing a friend Rain on Tin the other day). I don't know the notes off the top of my head...that's what Mustang is for. :)

Just A Big Stone 06.27.2007 05:28 AM

my acoustic is in standard and my electric (which I use in my band) is half step down...I don't use a lot of alternate tunings because without the appropriate gauges they don't sound good, and I have just one electric and one acoustic, and I don't want to change strings every time...

Just A Big Stone 06.27.2007 05:29 AM

However, I found that playing in GGDDGG is really funny

atsonicpark 09.12.2007 10:12 PM

ain't talkin bout beatles songs written 100 years before i was born

I've had one of my guitars tuned in that for a few weeks because I was playing Star Power

Tunings I use:
Standard
CADGBC- 1 song that I wrote a year and a half ago

my two new tunings:
E G# E F# G E
E Bb D F Bb E

these are both based on chords that I use in open tuning. The first one is actually a very normal chord moved up on the strings in standard, if you take away the Es and the G which are the drone notes in standard, it sounds much more normal.
