SY - do you know how much your opening acts get paid?
if not, shame on you, you should care. if yes, shame on you even more, it's pathetic.
|
harbor resentment much?

ok...so? is that necessarily the bands fault? do your homework in the music biz before making stupid comments... |
Support bands are always shite anyway.

boing should stick an "r" in the center of his username
|
I'm going to make a guess.... 2 free drink vouchers and a large bag of crisps for every member in the opening band?

I'd open for Sonic Youth for free.
|
maybe this dude was in a band that opened for sy or something
|
they pay you jack squat.
actually, sy have nothing to do with the pay, the beef is with the promoters. |

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaa that was a good laugh... ...you were saying? |
no sorry, it was just a local joke.
you're right in that rationalization, actually. go on, don't mind me. |

HA! You should "resume" the review that was in your signature. |
Surely opening for Sonic Youth is about the kudos, not the cash?

hello. first post. great board.
the OP sounds a bit harsh... but, hmm, maybe question is valid a little? dunnno....sure someone like marilyn manson doesn't know and give a shit, but i would expect thurston moore is involved a little more. i know opening for sy is great exposure for some unknown group (though they are of course only unknown to the audience, not sy) ... but my feeling always was that there is more relationship between than just about ad-space like every other mainstream band? i didn't know there is same kind of hierarchy. |

what do you mean? i never met brian warner the man at the merchtable. does you question imply there is no difference between moore & manson? |
I have an opinion on Brian Warner / Marilyn Manson. He's a very clever goth pantomime dame who knows all the right buttons to press to part "disenfanchised" teenagers from their parents' cash. I quite admire the guy, in a business sense.
|
Why would anyone want to open for Sonic Youth these days, anyway? They are old, have wrinkles and they are past their best.
|
I'd open for them. I have absolutely no talent, so I'd fit in wonderfully with timeless opening acts such as Decaer Pinga.

the theory about opening for sy being good exposure is a pretty one but it's not actually true. it's like opening for any other band, most of their fans are closed minded assholes who only care about the opener if pitchfork have reviewed them and have been blogged to death or if they have 700 out of print titles and are hailed as the most innovative noise band ever or if the opener is actually an older cult band, if it's really an unknown band that sy want to play with, then the crowd are not going to like them.
and i'm not being sour, actually i had the best time of my life, it was one of the best gigs i ever played. and by popular request, here's my former signature: Quote:

i hope magik markers didn't get paid shit.
|
I don't know about anybody else's arrangements, but I can say that the one time I got to open for them, they made sure we were paid quite well (by comparison to payouts most local bands get anyway; it wasn't a ginormous mountain of cash, but it was definitely a respectable amount for an unknown local opener), and we were treated extremely nicely. I know they told the club management to "pay the openers well."
They were very good to us, especially considering we made fairly poor choices regarding which musical facet of ourselves we decided to put on display that evening. We really weren't any great shakes and I'm pretty sure they weren't into us, but they still treated us with a great deal of respect and kindness. They are good to openers. |
wow, thats really kool savage, what year was it then?
did you get to hang out with them backstage at all? |
It was 2002, and I said hello, but was too embarrassed about the material we played to want to do anything more than that. They were really nice to us, but musically our band was in its lamest phase at that time and I was feeling more sheepish than elated afterward. Thing is, that band could have put on a totally different set and been pretty killer with no extra effort.
That said, they never let on that they didn't like us (which I'm sure they didn't; I wasn't even very into that band's music at that time), and they were very very kind and approachable. |
damn i wanna open for sy!
|
sc can brag all he wants, he can't get me jealous!!!
just kidding man. i played one of the best shows of my whole life that night, with any other band or anything. |
Looks like I am the jealous one, then.
Congrats on not blowing it, man! Seriously. |
i really didn't know what to expect musicwise (i knew people were going to boo us no matter what), and even the sound people started to dick with my guitar sound at some point but, since i have never played a smooth gig, it was ok.
thanks!! coming from you, i don't take it lightly. |
How were you guys approached to open for them, anyway?
|
my bassist's old band opened for SY in 2002, too.
right now, I would probably pay to open for them. |
that's just it - every band has the opportunity to say "yes, i will play for X amount" or "no way in hell - i want more or i don't play at all." if you feel you're too good to open for sonic youth at a small amount, then don't open for them.
my band just got offered to play siren fest - for no pay. fuck that. i know it's siren fest and it's exposure, but we're done playing for free. i'm not going to blame the people who want us to play - i'm just not going to play for them. yet we're going to open for a band i love for a very minimal amount - because i want to open for them. the minimal amount will pay us to get our equipment there and that's about it. |
the reason youre not getting paid is because nobody is paying to see your shitty band. if you dont like it... then dont play the show.
|
the wall- whats the name of your band?
|
sexy.

hey the wall, if i go see your band play, will you play all too fast for love the album? at least "on with the show" and "starry eyes"?
|

we've actually been considering doing that when we play cruefest in november. right now we play too fast, live wire and piece of your action (which you've got to admit was meant to be sang by a hot girl). |
