The cofffee shop thread.

Where is your favourite coffee shop in your town/city/wherever, and what sort of coffee do you usually order there?

sarramkrop 07.05.2007 09:19 AM

Starbucks, because they sell records too.

sonicl 07.05.2007 09:21 AM

I have no favourite coffee shop where I live, but my favourite place generally is an organic cafe in the back of a bookshop in Twickenham, because their coffee is rich and their cakes are delicious. If there's no nice-looking independent place to go to, I prefer Cafe Nero of the chains. I always order a strong black coffee.

jon boy 07.05.2007 09:29 AM

am sonntag in august, berlin. shit service but best people watching place in the city. they have a bed too if you feel like taking a nap.

MellySingsDoom 07.05.2007 09:43 AM

With you on Caffe Nero, sonicl. There's a great Italian coffee place between Greek Street and Frith Street in Soho, which has a lovely atmosphere and does a spiffing cappucino.

Danny Himself 07.05.2007 09:45 AM

The only coffee shops I've been in are Cafe Neros in London and Starbucks in Seattle. I don't drink coffee but if I want a muffin or a sonic youth record I'll go right in.

tesla69 07.05.2007 10:04 AM

I miss the cafes in San Francisco greatly, nothing in NYC compares.

Ripchord 07.05.2007 11:25 AM

Caffiene in Norwalk, CT
Slave To The Grind in Bronxville(?), NY
The Black Sheep in Amherst, MA

I don't think that bed is there for napping, and I bet those stains aren't from the coffee creamer.

are suggesting i masturbate in public places?

sonicl 07.05.2007 11:40 AM

I think that sounds like an excellent suggestion.

screamingskull 07.05.2007 11:46 AM

i used to be addicted to starbucks, i still know they coffee selection menu by heart. But i stopped drinking anything with caffeine as a new years resolution.

my favourite drinks use to be

> Venti Late with skimmed milk
> Venti Coffee frappuccino, light
> Tall Caramel Macchiato with skimmed milk

Java House

It's a bit on the pretentious and Yuppie side, but damn they make some good coffee. And it's locally and independently owned.

Plus they've got a second store in the local book store. That's the one I usually go to.

Pookie 07.05.2007 03:05 PM

Caffe Nero because it has the best coffee. There's one where I live, and another where I work.

And there used to be a Caffe Nero concession in a bookshop I used to work in. We used to get a lot of the unsold cakes at the end of the day. I'm easily pleased!

sonicl 07.05.2007 03:07 PM

Nice buns are very important, don't you think?

There's nothing better to sink your teeth into when you're feeling the urge.

sonicl 07.05.2007 03:14 PM

Aye, nice creamy buns.

Iain 07.05.2007 03:15 PM

I don't drink Coffee but my favourite places to have a cup of tea in Cardiff are:

The tearooms in the Church on The Hayes (70p a mug and ace cakes)
Chapter Arts centre - because it's only 60p a mug.

My favourite might be Truffles, pictured below.

Reasonable value and the soup of the day is always good, sometimes great.

sonicl 07.05.2007 03:25 PM

Also worthy of mention is the Cafe in the Crypt under the church between Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross station. The one that does candlelit concerts. The coffee's nothing special, but I love the room.

There's a decent coffee place just a few doors along from me. They can't make toasted sandwiches for shit but the coffee's good and It's close enough for me to drink it at home. What's more, the woman working there looks like Maria Sharapova. Which is nice.

Norma J 07.05.2007 07:05 PM

There's too streets in my town that has a string of cafes and other shops on them that are popular. One's more alternative whilst the other is similar but more dirty. There's a good independent cd store on the latter that sell secondhand cds, alittle pricey but still fun to look through. Although I probably prefer the first street which have a few cafes which I fancy. Definitely no Starbucks or Gloria Jeans for me.

i quit drinking coffee a few months ago; i feel better than ever. i miss the coffee ritual but i now have taken up the brewing of herbal potions, which are equally interesting and not as addictive.

when i drank coffee though, i used to love the coffee bar at kramerbooks in dc. no exactly a coffee bar, but a bar with an espresso machine--inside a bookstore!

in albuquerque, satellite (a local chain) is nice.

my drink of choice: double americano with 1/2 the water, strong and short, but long enough for a couple of cigarettes.

ah, good times.

Ripchord 07.05.2007 07:24 PM

i live in the suburbs. so when i can't get out i end up going to Starbucks or Gloria Jeans. And i have to admit it: i don't hate it...

Norma J 07.05.2007 07:27 PM

My love just handed me a perculated coffee. NICE.

If I had to resort to Starbucks or Gloria Jeans, I'd soon as stay at home and make a coffee.

!@#$%! 07.05.2007 07:34 PM

oh i forgot to mention-- in tel-aviv, as moshe mentioned in another thread, there are many wonderful coffee shops. my favorite one was, oh, one near dizengoff in north tel-aviv, in a cross street near the magen david adom, there was this hungarian pastry maker. oh yeah.

then there was another coffee shop with a tree inside, on allenby street. i only went there was but it was cool.

oh, wonderful stuff.

That place looks very similar to places here but none that actually have coffee or beverages of the kind. Looks cool.

i couldnt find a picture of the bar-- i love that bar. and there's also a restaurant. the place is always PACKED on weekends.

!@#$%! 07.06.2007 12:50 AM

ps- correction:

the coffee shop in tel-aviv was in sheinkin, not allenby

(that's sheinkin street, i love it)

and judging at the street map i saw, the othe coffee shop i think was in Basel St.

anyone know these places im talking about?? :(

Moshe 07.07.2007 02:18 PM

That place with the tree is a pizzeria now--It was my favorite "first date" place and they had a great Lasagna. That cool record store right next to it moved to Dizengoff st.

Пятхъдесят Шест 07.07.2007 06:22 PM

Ok, I hate coffee, and this place is quite suspect, but during the day (its more of a bar; whatever) they serve as a coffee house, at least you come across some interesting people from Omaha or just passing through, usually the latter.. Anyway, The Nomad Lounge

pbradley 07.07.2007 06:30 PM

The Fruitful Grounds is a nice coffee place by my school. Coffee of the People is another acclaimed joint. But personally, I'd rather home brew. Those places are pricey.

HaydenAsche 07.07.2007 06:39 PM

I go to a place called LuLu Beans in Willmar and I usually go to Dunn Brothers or Borders when I'm in the cities.

Bridgehead is by far my favorite. They have all fair trade, shade-grown coffee, prices as low as tim hortons, free internet access, and you can buy beans there, and collect "bridgehead points" on your "bridgehead card" to get free coffee. Fuck yes.

Cafe Complexe is my second choice. They just started out and are located in my hometown, and run by people that I know. They don't seem to get too too much business, and it's the closest to me, so I go there every once in a while

Moca Loca is my third choice, they're a small local shop that hangs art on the walls that are for sale. The shop only serves 1 fair trade coffee though, so it limits my selection down to the 1, and they're pretty expensive.

gmku 07.07.2007 06:57 PM

Why is coffee shop coffee nearly always so much better than coffee at home? We buy fresh beans, grind them ourselves, and use a pretty good Bunn coffee maker. But it's just not ever quite as strong tasting and flavorful. Very good, mind you, just not coffee house level.
